From oral structure to molecular evidence:new insights into the evolutionary phylogeny of the ciliate order Sessilida(Protista,Ciliophora),with the establishment of two new families and new contributions to the poorly studied family Vaginicolidae

Ciliated protists represent one of the most primitive and diverse lineages of eukaryotes,with nuclear dimorphism,a distinctive sexual process(conjugation),and extensive genome *** divergent ciliate lineages,the peritrich order Sessilida includes members with a colonial lifestyle,which may hint to an independent evolutionary attempt for multicellularity,although they are still single-celled *** date,the evolution and phylogeny of this group are still far from clear,in part due to the paucity of molecular and/or morphological data for many *** this study,we extend taxon sampling of a loricate group of sessilids by obtaining 69 new r DNA(SSU r DNA,ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2,and LSU r DNA)sequences from 20 wellcharacterized representative species and analyze the phylogenetic relationships within *** main findings are:(i)the genera Rhabdostyla and Campanella each represents a unique taxon at family level,supporting the establishment of two new families,i.e.,Rhabdostylidae *** Campanellidae ***.,respectively,the former being sister to a morphologically heterogeneous clade comprising Astylozoidae and several incertae sedis species and the latter occupying the basal position within the Sessilida clade;(ii)the structure of infundibular polykinety 3 is likely to be a phylogenetically informative character for resolving evolutionary relationships among sessilids;(iii)differences between sparsely and the densely arranged silverline systems could be a suprageneric taxonomic character;(iv)the monophyly of Vaginicolidae is confirmed,which is consistent with its specialized morphology,i.e.,the possession of a typical peritrich lorica which might be an apomorphy for this group;(v)within Vaginicolidae,the monotypic Cothurniopsis sensu Stokes,1893 is a synonym of Cothurnia Ehrenberg,1831,and a new combination is created,i.e.,Cothurnia valvata ***.;(vi)Vaginicola sensu lato comprises at least two distinctly divergent clades,one affiliated w

Colonization features of marine biofilm-dwelling protozoa in Chinese coastal waters of the Yellow Sea

Colonization features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa,especially ciliates,are routinely used as a useful tool for marine *** this review,we summarize some of these features to develop an optimal sampling strategy for using biofilmdwelling protozoa as bioindicators of marine water *** focus on the utility of:(1)diversity in dices to analyze the colonizahon features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa for monitoring marine water quality;(2)MacArthur-Wilson and logistic equation models to determine spatio-temporal variations in colonization dynamics;and(3)homogeneity in taxonomic breadth of biofilm-dwelling protozoa during the process of *** main findings are that:(1)the colonization dynamics of biofilm-dwelling protozoa are similar at depths of 1-5 m in spring and autumn;(2)temporal variability was well fitted to the MacArthur-Wilson and logistic models(P<0.05);and(3)species composition reached an equilibrium after a colonization period of 10-14 days in spring and autumn,but this took less time in the summer and more time in the ***-plotting tests demonstrated spatial variability in homogeneity in taxonomic structure of the ciiiate communities at different depths in the water column,with high levels at 1 m and 2 m and lower levels at 3.5 m and 5 ***,the findings of this review suggest that the colonization dynamics of biofilin-dwelling protozoa may be influenced by different depths and seasons in coastal waters and 1-2 m in spring and autumn may be optimal sampling strategy for bioassessment on large spatial/temporal scales in marine ecosystems.

External coloration in animals depends on the interaction of several different factors including the genetics and epigenetics processes that underlie the color expression,the mechanisms of color perception,and the general mechanisms controlling color evolution and *** all,camouflages from predators and conspicuousness are of particular interest because pose animal to choose between opposite adjustment in *** external coloration of crustaceans is mainly due to the accumulation of carotenoids in the exoskeleton and the epidermal layer,and the trade-off between camouflage and communication had led to a variety of responses,involving signal partitioning,spectral sensibility,changing coloration,or signaling ***,we used digital images to explore intrapopulation variability of the external coloration of Pacifastacus leniusculus among body regions within an individual and between *** found that 1)ventral coloration of claws are more saturated and brilliant than upper parts,2)males express a more saturated and brightness coloration than females,especially on the lower portion of claws,3)color intensity and brightness increases with size differently in different body regions,and 4)brightness is more variable in males than in *** the above patterns support the hypothesis that color in this species could be the result of a compromise between camouflage from predators and conspicuousness for *** results of this study suggest that carotenoid might have something to do with intraspecific communication and perform more complex functions than that of a simple pigment.

Facile Synthesis of Fe/Cr-Codoped ZnO Nanoparticles with Excellent Adsorption Performance for Various Pollutants

Adsorption is an effective and low-cost method for removing antibiotics and dyes. However, it remains a challenge to prepare an adsorbent with excellent adsorption properties for both various antibiotics and dyes. Herein, Fe/Cr-codoped ZnO with high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate are prepared by an environmentally friendly solvothermal method. Fe/Cr-codope ZnO with a diameter of 10–20 nm exhibits superior adsorption capacities for the antibiotics of tetracycline hydrochloride(TC-HCl)(826.45 mg g-1) and tetracycline(TC)(331.01 mg g-1), and anionic dyes of methyl orange(MO)(1023.88 mg g-1), methyl blue(MB)(726.26 mg g-1) and direct red(DR)(642.25 mg g-1). Meanwhile, it presents fast adsorption rate, it only took 30 min to reach more than 90% of the equilibrium adsorption amount for TC-HCl, TC, MO, MB and DR. The adsorption process closely fitted the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo second-order rate equation. More importantly, simple method has been developed for separating the pollutant from the adsorbent, which not only regenerates the materials, but also completes the recovery of antibiotics and dyes, avoiding the secondary pollution. The broad-spectrum, rapid, environment-friendly and effective adsorption properties make Fe/Crcodoped ZnO a promising adsorbent for water treatments.

The Effects of Different Carbon Sources on the Growth of <i>Rhodobacter sphaeroides</i>

Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a purple non-sulfur bacterium that belongs to the α-3 subdivision of Proteobacteria. R. sphaeroides is a model bacterial species because of its complex genome structure and expanded metabolic capabilities. The genome of R. sphaeroides consists of two circular chromosomes and five endogenous plasmids. It has the ability to grow under a wide variety of environmental conditions. It grows aerobically (~20% O2), semi-aerobically (~2% O2), and photosynthetically (under anaerobic condition plus light). It has been previously shown that many bacterial species utilize a number of alternate carbon sources for their optimal growth under a variety of growth conditions. We hypothesize that different or an additional carbon source in the minimal medium differentially affects the bacterial growth under dark-aerobic conditions. The bacterial growth kinetics and the number of cells in the bacterial culture were analyzed by measuring the optical density (OD at 600 nm) and the colony forming units (CFUs) at regular intervals of bacterial cultures. Results reveal that sodium succinate is the preferred sole carbon source for the optimal growth of R. sphaeroides. The results of growth kinetics and CFUs together concluded that from the tested carbon sources, sodium succinate is the best single carbon source in the minimal media for the optimal growth of R. sphaeroides. Interestingly, cell culture grown in SIS supplemented with sodium acetate exhibits a prolonged lag phase with the lowest ODs and CFUs that later switches to the growth-burst phase support previously discovered similar phenomenon of the growth-rate switch in the presence of acetate metabolism. Future work will utilize the aerobically grown R. sphaeroides’ cells as a biocatalyst to deplete the oxygen levels from natural gas streams and industrial gas pipelines.

Synchronization within synchronization: transients and intermittency in ecological networks

Transients are fundamental to ecological systems with significant implications to management,conservation and biological control. We uncover a type of transient synchronization behavior in spatial ecological networks whose local dynamics are of the chaotic, predator–prey type. In the parameter regime where there is phase synchronization among all the patches, complete synchronization(i.e. synchronization in both phase and amplitude) can arise in certain pairs of patches as determined by the network symmetry—henceforth the phenomenon of ‘synchronization within synchronization.’ Distinct patterns of complete synchronization coexist but, due to intrinsic instability or noise, each pattern is a transient and there is random, intermittent switching among the patterns in the course of time evolution. The probability distribution of the transient time is found to follow an algebraic scaling law with a divergent average transient lifetime. Based on symmetry considerations, we develop a stability analysis to understand these phenomena. The general principle of symmetry can also be exploited to explain previously discovered,counterintuitive synchronization behaviors in ecological networks.

Soleus arthrogenic muscle inhibition following acute lateral ankle sprain correlates with symptoms and ankle disability but not with postural control

Background:Acute lateral ankle sprains(ALAS)are associated with long-term impairments and instability tied to altered neural *** muscle inhibition(AMI)has been observed in this population;however,relationships with injury-related impairments are unclear,potentially due to the resting,prone position in which AMI is typically *** AMI during bipedal stance may provide a better understanding of this ***:AMI was assessed in 38 young adults(19 ALAS within 72 h of injury:10 males,21.4±2.7 years;19 healthy controls:10 males,21.9±2.2 years;mean±SD)using the Hoffmann reflex(H-reflex)during bipedal *** stimulation was administered to identify the _(max)imal H-reflex(H_(max))and _(max)imal motor response(M_(max))from the soleus,fibularis longus,and tibialis anterior *** primary outcome measure was the H_(max)/M_(max) *** outcomes included acute symptoms(pain and swelling),postural control during bipedal stance,and self-reported ***:No significant group-by-limb interactions were observed for any ***,a significant group main effect was observed in the soleus muscle(F(1,35)=6.82,p=0.013),indicating significantly lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios following ALAS(0.38±0.20)compared to healthy controls(0.53±0.16).Furthermore,lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios in the soleus significantly correlated with acute symptoms and self-reported function but not with postural ***:This study supports previous evidence of AMI in patients with ALAS,providing insight into neurophysiologic impacts of musculoskeletal *** results suggest that assessing AMI in a standing position following acute injury may provide valuable insight into how AMI develops and guide potential therapeutic options to curb and offset the formation of joint instability.

Cobalt phosphide (CoP) is considered to be a potential candidate in the field of electrocatalysis due to its low-cost, abundant resources and high electrochemical stability. However, there is a great space for further improvement of its electrocatalytic performance since its charge transfer rate and catalytic activity have not reached a satisfactory level. Herein, we design and fabricate a three dimensional urchins like V-doped CoP with different amounts of V-doping on nickel foam electrode. The V-doped CoP/NF electrode with optimized amounts of V-doping (10%) exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance under universal-pH conditions and preeminent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline media. Notably, the assembled water-splitting cell displays a cell voltage of only 1.53 V at 10 mA·cm−2 and has excellent durability, much better than many reported related bifunctional catalysts. The experiment results and theoretical analysis revealed that vanadium atoms replace cobalt atoms in CoP lattice. Vanadium doping can not only raise the density of electronic states near the Fermi level enhancing the conductivity of the catalyst, but can also optimize the free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates adsorption over CoP, thus promoting its catalytic activity. Moreover, the unique nanostructure of the catalyst provides the various shortened channels for charge transfer and reactant/electrolyte diffusion, which accelerates the electrocatalytic process. Also, the in situ growth strategy can improve the conductivity and stability of the catalyst.

Maintaining Resources for Traditional Medicine: A Global Overview and a Case Study from Buganda (Uganda)

Presentations at a session of the 13 th Congress of the International Society for Ethnobiology ( ISE,May 2012) provided a global overview of'maintaining resources for traditional medicine'. Two themes received special attention,transmission of traditional medical knowledge and conservation of medicinal plants. The consensus at the well-attended session was that traditional medicine can play a useful role in primary healthcare,including for chronic complaints and spiritual problems. However,the use of traditional medicine is declining in many places. Some practical efforts at maintaining resources for traditional medicine are described. A case study for Buganda ( Uganda) , given in greater detail,shows that progress in maintaining resources for traditional medicine can be impeded by forces not directly related to its intrinsic merits. The value of making efforts to maintain resources for traditional medicine is discussed in relation to its contribution to biocultural conservation,much needed today to counter-balance the homogenising and ecologically destabilising influences of globalisation.

Charge Renormalization, Thermodynamics, and Structure of Deionized Colloidal Suspensions
