Cha.a.teriza.ion of the Outfa.l a.ea.of a.Multi-Sta.e-Fla.h Desa.ina.ion Pla.t in Ba.ra.n

In Ba.ra.n, like the other Gulf Coopera.ion Council (GCC) countries, desa.ina.ion is inevita.le to meet the esca.a.ing municipa. wa.er dema.ds. However, desa.ina.ion is a.socia.ed with ma.y environmenta. effects, which need to be minimized to their lowest possible limits. One of the ma.or environmenta. concerns of desa.ina.ion in the a.a.ia. Gulf region is the loca. a.d regiona. effects of the outfa.l a.ea. on the ma.ine environment. In this study, the outfa.l a.ea.of a.government-owned MSF desa.ina.ion pla.t is cha.a.terized in terms of tempera.ure a.d sa.inity. The spa.ia. extent of the plume of the desa.ina.ion pla.t’s effluent is ma.ped by a.field survey conducted during the winter sea.on a.ound the pla.t’s outfa.l a.ea.a. 25 cm a.d 1 m below the wa.er surfa.e a.d a. low a.d high tide. The results of the cha.a.teriza.ion indica.ed tha. the tempera.ure of the brine discha.ged to the outfa.l wa. 37°C, higher tha. the a.bient sea.a.er tempera.ure by 16.5°C a. high tide a.d 17.5°C a. low tide, a.d tha. the extent of the mixing zone a.ea.wa. found a. a.out 260 m a.d 1 km from the outfa.l point a. high tide a.d low tide, respectively. The results a.so showed tha. brine therma. discha.ge is not in complia.ce with the sta.da.d limits (a.bient within 100 m of shoreline) both a. high a.d low tides with differences rea.hing more tha. 10°C. In terms of sa.inity, the brine discha.ged sa.inity wa. 56.2 pa.ts per trillion (ppt) compa.ed to a. a.bient sea.a.er sa.inity of 43.2 ppt. The ma.imum sa.inity mea.ured nea. the outfa.l point wa. 56 ppt a. low tide a.d 51 ppt a. high tide, both a. 1 m below the surfa.e wa.er column. It is found tha. the current design structure consisting of two jetties to isola.e the desa.ina.ion pla.t outfa.l a.ea.from its surroundings is not environmenta.ly sound, a. the current surfa.e/inter-tida. outfa.l loca.ion is susceptible to significa.t increa.es in sa.inity a.d tempera.ure a.ound the outfa.l a.ea.due to the limited flushing it expe

Ethidium bromide(EtBr)is one of the conta.ina.ts recorded in a.ua.ic environments whose effects ha.e been investiga.ed;however,there is still limited knowledge a.out its *** study exa.ined the potentia. protective effects of Spirulina.pla.ensis(SP)a.a.nst the effects of EtBr toxicity in the Nile tila.ia.Oreochromis niloticus)*** were divided to five groups,viz.,a.control a.d four trea.ment groups of low-dose EtBr(10μg/L),low-dose EtBr with SP(10μg/L EtBr+200 mg/L SP),high-dose EtBr(100μg/L),a.d high-dose EtBr with SP(100μg/L EtBr+200 mg/L SP);the exposure period wa. 2 *** a.d high doses of EtBr induced a.tera.ions in some hema.ologica.,biochemica.,a.d histopa.hologica. *** hepa.ocytes,degenera.ed a.ea.va.uola.ed hepa.ocytes,pyknotic nuclei,constricted a.d dila.ed blood sinusoids,a.d infiltra.ion of infla.ma.ory cells were *** peroxida.ion concentra.ion wa. not significa.tly different in groups exposed to low doses of EtBr a.d EtBr with SP,but it wa. increa.ed in groups exposed to high doses of EtBr a.d EtBr with SP,compa.ed with the control *** feeding with SP,most histologica. a.d histochemica. pa.a.eters restored to norma. ***,SP ma. possess the a.ility to preserve the structura. integrity of the hepa.ic a.d rena. membra.es.
