We have experimentally improved the temporal contrast of the petawatt J-KAREN-P laser *** have investigated how the generation of pre-pulses by post-pulses changes due to the temporal overlap between the stretched pulse and the post-pulse in a chirped-pulse amplification *** have shown that the time at which the pre-pulse is generated by the post-pulse and its shape are related to the time difference between the stretched main pulse and the *** this investigation,we have found and identified the origins of the pre-pulses and have demonstrated the removal of most pre-pulses by eliminating the post-pulse with wedged *** have also demonstrated the impact of stretcher optics on the picosecond *** have realized orders of magnitude enhancement of the pedestal by improving the optical quality of a key component in the stretcher.

We report on the design and characterization of the plasma mirror system installed on the J-KAREN-P laser at the Kansai Photon Science Institute,National Institutes for Quantum Science and *** reflectivity of the single plasma mirror system exceeded 80%.In addition,the temporal contrast was improved by two orders of magnitude at 1 ps before the main ***,the laser near-field spatial distribution after the plasma mirror was kept constant at plasma mirror fluence of less than 100 kJ/cm^(2).We also present the results of investigating the difference and the fluctuation in energy,pulse width and pointing stability with and without the plasma mirror system.

We simultaneously observed both the fast proton generation and terahertz(THz) radiation in the laser pulse interaction with a thin-foil target. The maximum proton energy of ～2.3 Me V and an intense THz radiation were observed at the pulse duration of～30 fs. We also measured the proton beam and UV harmonics from a thin-foil target by changing the laser pulse duration. In the case of the ～500 fs, peaks of UV harmonics up to fourth order appeared. This unique combination of the multiple beams will provide useful applications such as pump-probe experiments.

In this study, we introduced the temperaturedependent formation phases and crystallographic parameters of hot-pressed silver gallium telluride AgGaTe2 and copper gallium telluride CuGaTe2 with chalcopyrite structure from 300 to 800 K. These two compounds are potential thermoelectric materials in the intermediate temperature range; however, the temperature-dependent formation phases and crystallographic parameters of hotpressed samples have not yet been analyzed in detail. The crystal structure analysis based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction （SXRD） measurements clarifies that impurity phases such as Te and Ag2Te in the AgGaTe2 matrix and Te and CuTe in the CuGaTe2 matrix appear at some temperature regions above 300 K. The existence of such impurity phases could be correlated with the increases of the electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient of the samples after multiple measurement cycles of the temperature-dependent transport properties from 300 to 800 K. The tetragonal lattice parameters a and c, tetragonal lattice volume, thermal expansion coefficients, tetragonal distortion, anion displacement parameter, and isotropic displacement parameter of the hot-pressed AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2 were also analyzed. These crystallographic parameters are expected to substantially affect the thermoelectric properties of AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2. Our results provide prospect of the long-term high-temperature stability and clues of the detailed analysis on the transport properties of hot-pressed AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2, which should aid their development for thermoelectric applications.

Landslide Hazard Mapping During a Large Scale Earthquake

This paper reports a method to make hazard maps of sediment disasters resulting from an earthquake and following heavy rainfall for the entire region of Gunma prefecture, Japan. Firstly, we identified the slopes in the study area, which are susceptible to large-scale landslides and land failures during an earthquake with a magnitude of seven on the Richter scale. To analyze the sheer volume of the data, we employed a statistical method to evaluate the susceptibility, mainly considering geomorphologic conditions. Secondly, we extracted mudflow and slope failure susceptible areas and potential flooding zones resulting from a damming at a river triggered by the earthquake and heavy rainfall, and we identified the settlements which would be isolated by the road disruption caused by the sediment disasters. As the result, 359 settlements were classified as potential isolation areas. Combining the above-mentioned susceptibility maps, we obtained two types of sediment disaster hazard maps of the study area, depicting the potential hazards which would occur during the earthquake and the disasters which would be caused by heavy rainfall following the quake, respectively. These hazard maps and the disaster information would be useful for the regional disaster prevention planning and countermeasures in the future.

It is becoming an important social problem to make maintenance and rehabilitation of existing short and medium span(10-20 m)bridges because there are a huge amount of short and medium span bridges in service in the *** kernel of such bridge management is to develop a method of safety(condition)assessment on items which include remaining life and load carrying *** health monitoring using information technology and sensors is capable of providing more accurate knowledge of bridge performance than traditional *** aim of this paper is to introduce a state-of-the-art on not only a rational bridge health monitoring system incorporating with the information and communication technologies for lifetime management of existing short and medium span bridges but also a continuous data collecting system designed for bridge health monitoring of mainly short and medium span *** this paper,although there are some useful monitoring methods for short and medium span bridges based on the qualitative or quantitative information,mainly two advanced structural health monitoring systems are described to review and analyse the potential of utilizing the long term health monitoring in safety assessment and management issues for short and medium span *** first is a special designed mobile in-situ loading device(vehicle)for short and medium span road bridges to assess the structural safety(performance)and derive optimal strategies for maintenance using reliability based *** second is a long term health monitoring method by using the public buses as part of a public transit system(called bus monitoring system)to be applied mainly to short and medium span bridges,along with safety indices,namely,"characteristic deflection"which is relatively free from the influence of dynamic disturbances due to such factors as the roughness of the road surface,and a structural anomaly parameter.
