High entropy state of orientationally-disordered clusters in Zr-based bulk metallic glass

A phase transformation of a metastable Zr2Ni intermetallic crystalline phase to vitrify was studied with molecular dynamics(MD)simulations based on a plastic crystal model(PCM),which utilizes the orientational disorder of molecules of plastic crystals in a class of soft *** simulation results showed that computational operations in MD-PCM for the random rotations of the clusters in the crystalline phase around their center of gravity and subsequent annealing lead to form a dense random packing structure from the metastable Zr2Ni *** randomly-rotated clusters provide high degrees of freedom in terms of atomic positions,which results in enhancing the glass-forming ability of the *** critical fraction of the number of rotated clusters for forming the glassy phase(fc~R)is evaluated to be ***,the critical fraction of the number of un-rotated clusters(fc~U=1-fc~R) is close to the critical concentration of site percolation for metallic *** mechanism of the metastable Zr2Ni phase to vitrify with increasing f~R was analyzed with a concept of communal entropy in the free volume theory with solid-and liquid-like cells proposed by Cohen and *** MD-PCM for the metastable Zr2Ni phase suggests that Zr-based bulk metallic glass(BMG)can be regarded as an alloy in a high rotation entropy state of clusters and that glass transition takes place by percolation of the nuclei of a liquid-like glassy phase.

The objective of this paper is to provide an analytical basis for the quantitative evaluation of damage to a reinforced concrete structure based on the vibration data obtained by using the damage detection technique. A partial reinforced concrete system of a weak beam/strong column moment frame is chosen as an example. A pushover analysis is carried out in order to numerically examine both the story shear-relative displacement characteristics and the associated damage level. In the analysis, a two dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis is employed considering several constitutive models. As a result, the degradation of the stiffness at the damaged story is characterized in association with the story relative displacement. It is also pointed out that the rotation angle of the column-base is highly correlated with the story relative displacement. Based on the analytical findings, quantitative approaches for a structural health monitoring system are suggested considering both the current sensor technologies and those available in the future. Liver injury after aluminum potassium sulfate and tannic acid treatment of hemorrhoids

We are reporting a rare case of acute liver injury that developed after an internal hemorrhoid treatment with the aluminum potassium sulfate and tannic acid(ALTA) regimen. A 41-year-old man developed a fever and liver injury after undergoing internal hemorrhoid treatment with a submucosal injection of ALTA with lidocaine. The acute liver injury was classified clinically as hepatocellular and pathologically as cholestastic. We could not classify the mechanism of injury. High eosinophil and immunoglobulin E levels characterized the injury,and a drug lymphocyte stimulation test was negative on postoperative day 25. Fluid replacement for two weeks after hospitalization improved the liver injury. ALTA therapy involves injecting chemicals into the submucosa,from the rectum to the anus,and this is the first description of a case that developed a severe liver disorder after this treatment; hence,an analysis of future cases as they accumulate is desirable.

In modern society, the population, wealth and social functions are increasingly concentrated in a few large cities. Such concentration brings about efficiency while at the same time it increases the vulnerability of the society. To address this issue, the Science Council of Japan（SCJ） published a proposal entitled ＂Shape Cities and Societies Safer against Severe Earthquakes＂. It makes a variety of suggestions for enhancing the seismic resilience of large cities, including：（1） comprehensive thinking based on the latest scientific knowledge and rich imagination;（2） selection of sites suitable for residence and social activities;（3） introducing the urban seismic coefficient;（4） promoting the enhancement of the seismic performance of buildings and civil structures;（5） easing the concentration of population and functions;（6） building communities that enable shelter and escape;（7） resilient technology of information and communication system and its effective utilization;（8） preparation and implementation of emergency response after earthquakes;（9） development and application of new structural seismic technology;（10） learning from domestic and foreign earthquake disasters and launching of international cooperation and knowledge sharing and（11） taking actions from a multidisciplinary perspective. The proposal is introduced in this paper.

In current engine controls, a number of control methods are based on the air charge estimation in engine intake systems. Since the derivative of the air mass flow through the throttle valve goes to infinity when the intake pressure is close to the upper stream pressure, the relatively large numerical error or oscillation occurs near the singularity point when using common algorithms. This paper develops an effective algorithm for calculating the air mass flow in engine intake systems. Utilizing the high-level model description(HLMD), the system is described by mass and energy conservation laws and therefor the singularity issue at the zero pressuredifference point is transformed into a singularity issue at the corresponding energy point. Then, the implicit midpoint rule, a special symplectic discrete method, is selected to integrate the energy and mass conservation system. The simulation results show that the numerical behaviour of the air mass flow is significantly improved at the singularity point by using the proposed algorithm. The experimental results also verify that the qualitative behaviour of the air mass flow calculated by the proposed algorithm is consistent with the actual physical system.

The authors had invented the unique wind power unit composed of the large-sized front wind rotor,the small-sized rear wind rotor and the peculiar generator with the inner and the outer rotational armatures without the conventional *** unit is called "Intelligent Wind Power Unit" by the *** front and the rear wind rotors drive the inner and the outer armatures,respectively,while the rotational torque is counter-balanced between both armatures/wind *** paper discusses experimentally the acoustic noise from the front and the rear wind *** acoustic noise,in the counter-rotating operation,is induced mainly from the flow interaction between both rotors,and has the dominant power spectrum density at the frequency of the blade passing *** noise is caused mainly from the turbulent fluctuation due to the flow separation on the blade,when the rear wind rotor stops or rotates in the same direction as the front wind rotor.

The first generation of the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata(Walker), arrives every year in northern Japan in mainly late May to early June. Analyses of weather maps suggested that this moth’s immigration source could be eastern China, but the accuracy of those analyses was very limited due to the lack of a current standard trajectory analysis. The management of migratory insect pests such as M. separata benefits from the identification of the migration source(s)and pathway(s) of the pests. The present study provides a trajectory analysis for M. separata. Backward trajectories from trap sites in northern Japan were calculated with the HYSPLIT System developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, taking the flight speed of M. separata and the limitation of low ambient temperature at flight height into account. The ending times of the moth’s short and long trajectories were set at dusk on the day before and two days before the possible arrival date, respectively. The results suggested two types of possible migration pathway: a multi-step pathway from Northeast China, the Korean Peninsula, and eastern Russia, which are destination areas of the first-generation’s migration, and a direct pathway from seasonal main emigration areas in eastern China such as Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. These findings contribute to our understanding of the migration ecology of M. separata and can be used for the development of methods to predict the migration of this insect.

The estimation of maximum tangential velocity becomes a very important factor for the estimation of performancesof the vortex chamber. In this paper, a proposed flow model of how to estimate the maximum tangential velocity inthe special form of the vortex chamber is described in detail. The pressure drop basing upon the rapid expansion byflowing from the inlet pipe into the cyclone body is estimated as half of the dynamic pressure in the inlet pipe.
