Possible source and migration pathway for early-summer immigrants of the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata, arriving in northern Japan

The first generation of the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata(Walker), arrives every year in northern Japan in mainly late May to early June. Analyses of weather maps suggested that this moth’s immigration source could be eastern China, but the accuracy of those analyses was very limited due to the lack of a current standard trajectory analysis. The management of migratory insect pests such as M. separata benefits from the identification of the migration source(s)and pathway(s) of the pests. The present study provides a trajectory analysis for M. separata. Backward trajectories from trap sites in northern Japan were calculated with the HYSPLIT System developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, taking the flight speed of M. separata and the limitation of low ambient temperature at flight height into account. The ending times of the moth’s short and long trajectories were set at dusk on the day before and two days before the possible arrival date, respectively. The results suggested two types of possible migration pathway: a multi-step pathway from Northeast China, the Korean Peninsula, and eastern Russia, which are destination areas of the first-generation’s migration, and a direct pathway from seasonal main emigration areas in eastern China such as Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. These findings contribute to our understanding of the migration ecology of M. separata and can be used for the development of methods to predict the migration of this insect.

The fall armyworm(FAW),Spodoptera frugiperda(***),spread rapidly in Africa and Asia recently,causing huge economic losses in crop *** armyworm caterpillars were first detected in South Korea and Japan in June ***,the migration timing and path for FAW into the countries were estimated by a trajectory simulation approach implementing the insect's flight *** result showed that FAWs found in both South Korea and Japan were estimated to have come from eastern China by crossing the Yellow Sea or the East China Sea in 10–36 h in three series of *** the first series,FAW moths that arrived on Jeju Island during 22–24 May were estimated to be from Zhejiang,Anhui and Fujian Provinces after 1–2 nights’*** the second series,it was estimated that FAW moths landed in southern Korea and Kyushu region of Japan simultaneously or successively during 5–9 June,and these moths mostly came from Guangdong and Fujian *** FAW moths in the third series were estimated to have immigrated from Taiwan Province onto Okinawa Islands during 19–24 *** these migrations,southwesterly low-level jets extending from eastern China to southern Korea and/or Japan were observed in the northwestern periphery of the western Pacific Subtropical *** results,for the first time,suggested that the overseas FAW immigrants invading Korea and Japan came from eastern and southern *** study is helpful for future monitoring,early warning and the source control of this pest in the two countries.

Estimation of gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and characteristics of atmospheric PAHs at a traffic site in Kanazawa,Japan

Size-fractionated particulate matter(PM_(2.5)and PM>_(2.5))was collected at a traffic site in Kanazawa,Japan in a seasonal sampling work in *** polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(4-to 6-ring PAHs)were determined in fine and coarse *** gas/particle partitioning coefficients(K_(p))of the PAHs were calculated from the supercooled liquid vapour pressure and octanol-air partitioning coefficient based on the relationships obtained in previous traffic pollution-related *** PAHs were estimated by K_(p) and the concentrations of PM and particulate *** concentrations of total PAHs were 32.5,320.1 and 5646.2 pg/m^(3) in the PM>_(2.5),PM_(2.5) and gas phases,*** seasonal trends in PAHs were observed(particle phase:lowest in summer,gas phase:lowest in spring,particle and gas phase:lowest in spring).Compared to 2019,the total PAH concentrations(in particles)decreased in 2020,especially in spring and summer,which might be due to reduced traffic trips during the COVID-19 *** incremental lifetime cancer risk(ILCR)calculated from the toxic equivalent concentrations relative to benzo[a]pyrene(BaP_(eq))was lower than the acceptable limit issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency,indicating a low cancer risk in long-term exposure to current PAH *** is notable that gaseous PAHs considerably contributed to BaP_(eq) and ILCR(over 50%),which highlighted the significance of gaseous PAH monitoring for public health *** low-cost estimation method for gaseous PAHs can be expected to reliably and conveniently obtain PAH concentrations as a surrogate for traditional sampling in the future work.

Weyl points and Dirac lines protected by multiple screw rotations

In three-dimensional noncentrosymmetric materials two-fold screw rotation symmetry forces electron＇s energy bands to have Weyl points at which two bands touch. This is illustrated for space groups No. 19 （P212121 ） and No. 198 （P213）, which have three orthogonal screw rotation axes. In the case of space groups No. 61 （Pbca） and No. 205 （Pa-3） that have extra inversion symmetry, Weyl points are promoted to four-fold degenerate line nodes in glide-invariant planes. The three-fold rotation symmetry present in the space groups No. 198 and No. 205 allows Weyl and Dirac points, respectively, to appear along its rotation axes in the Brillouin zone and generates four-fold and six-fold degeneracy at the F point and R point, respectively.

Estimations of the Maximum Tangential Velocity V_(θm) in the Vortex Core Region and also the Mean Rotational Velocity V_(oi) near the Concave Wall Surface in the Returned Flow Type Cyclone Dust Collector

There are many types of cyclone dust collectors for separating the fine solid and dust particles from gases in the various industries and also in the home used purposes. For estimating the power loss and the collection efficiency, one of the most important factors is the maximum tangential velocity V0m in the vortex core region in the cyclone body. In order to determine V0~ by the simple method, it is useful to apply the mechanical balance of the angular momentum fluxes under the assumption of Ogawa combined vortex model which is composed of the quasi-forced vortex in the vortex core region and also the quasi-free vortex surrounded the vortex core region and also under the assumption of the introduction of equivalent length Heq corresponding to the cone spaces of the cyclone body and the dust bunker. On the other hand, the mean rotational velocity Voi near the concave wall surface is also estimated by the mechanical balance of angular momentum fluxes with the moment of viscous friction force. For confirming the general applications of the obtained equations, the returned flow types cyclones changed the throat diameter D3 are designed. The material of the cyclone is the transparent acrylic resin. Therefore the inner surface of the cyclone body can be regarded as smooth surface. The comparisons of the measured velocities V~ and Voi by a cylindrical Pitot tube are shown in good agreement with those of the proposed equations. The above stated results are described in detail.

Comparison of generalized engine control and MPC based on maximum principle

Automotive engine control has been continuously improved due to the strong demands from the society and the market since introducing electronic controls but not always following control theories. Therefore, it is not easy for researchers from academia and even engineers from the automotive industry to grasp the whole aspect of engine control. To encounter the issue, important features of engine control are extracted and generalized from the standpoint of control engineering. Comparisons of the control and model predictive control （MPC） showed an outstanding performance of the control generalized from engine controls and how to apply MPC in the framework.

Control of Collection Efficiency for Axial Flow Cyclone Dust Collectors with Fixed Guide Vanes and with Funnel Shaped Exit Pipes

The experimental result of the collection efficiency of the axial flow cyclone with the fixed guide vanes is lower than that with the tangential inlet pipe to the cyclone body due to the weak angular momentum transfer given by flowing through the guide vanes. However, one of the interesting points is the control of the collection efficiency depended on the funnel shaped exit pipes. The collection efficiencies for these funnel shaped exit pipes are depended on the Froude number. Then, in this paper, the experimental results of the pressure drop and also the collection efficiency using the fly-ash particles and also the comparison of the calculated results of the collection efficiency with the experimental results are described i~ detail.

Spin-up and Spin-Down Times of Rotational Air Flow Depended on Mean Air Velocity and Surface Roughness on Inner Surface in Cylindrical Vortex Chamber

The spin-up time TA in the spin-up process and spin-down time TD in the spin-down process of rotational air flow in the cylindrical vortex chamber with three kinds of the artificial surface roughness were investigated. One of the most different characteristics between the smooth and rough surface conditions was the spin-down time TD. Also the transient response of the tangential velocity on the spin-up process was analyzed numerically and this result was compared with the experimental results. The above stated results are reported here in detail.

Petrological study of the western Iratsu mass from the Sambagawa metamorphic belt, central Shikoku, Japan

The western Iratsu mass, the largest tectonic body in the Sambagawa metamorphic belt, central Shikoku, is mainly composed of epidote amphibolite with minor amounts of eclogite. Systematically, a majority of garnets show bell-shaped chemical zoning of pyrope contents and Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) monotonously increasing outward. The grossular component in zonal garnet increases outwards, maximizes at an intermediate part, and then decreases towards the outermost rim, reflecting a process from increasing to decreasing pressure conditions during the prograde metamorphism. Jadeite contents of omphacite range from 25～20mole% within the cores to 15～10 mole% at the rims, implying a pressure-decreasing process (from 11 × 105 Pa to 8 × 105 Pa). The peak pressure-temperature (P-T) condition of 630～680 ℃ and ca. 15× 105 Pa in the western Iratsu mass is much higher than that of (610±25) ℃ and (10± 1)× 105 Pa of the Sambagawa oligoclase-biotite zone schists. The authors suggest a clockwise P-T-t path for the western Iratsu mass.

Next-generation research on transcriptional regulation of plant immunity

Plant health is fundamental for agricultural production to feed the growing global population as well as for primary production to sustain ecosystem *** innate immune system of plants is integral to their health;it is activated upon recognition of pathogen invasion by immune receptors,leading to pathogen resistance through genome-wide transcriptional *** defense-associated transcriptome reprogramming is mediated by various immune signals,including the phytohormone salicylic acid(SA).SA plays a pivotal role in activating pathogen resistance both locally in infected tissues and systemically in uninfected *** Arabidopsis thaliana,SA is perceived by its receptors NONEXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES 1(NPR1),NPR3,and *** NPR3 and NPR4 function as negative regulators of SA signaling,NPR1 serves as a key positive regulator of SA-mediated transcriptomic changes and pathogen resistance(Ding et al.,2018).Consistent with its lack of a DNA-binding domain,NPR1 has been shown to act as a transcription cofactor for multiple transcription factors(TFs)such as TGAs and WRKYs(Wang et al.,2006;Kumar et al.,2022).Besides TFs,other components of the transcriptional machinery are likely to participate in NPR1-regulated transcriptional responses,as NPR1 forms nuclear condensates upon SA induction(Zavaliev et al.,2020).Despite decades of research on NPR1’s functions in plant immunity,a comprehensive understanding of how NPR1 cooperates with multiple TFs and other components of the transcriptional machinery to initiate and propagate transcriptional responses to SA is still lacking.
