Broadly tunable lens-coupled nonlinear quantum cascade lasers in the sub-THz to THz frequency range

Room-temperature terahertz(THz)quantum cascade laser sources with intracavity difference-frequency nonlinear mixing are electrically pumped monolithic semiconductor laser sources operating in the 0.6–6 THz spectral *** report widely tunable,low-frequency THz quantum cascade laser sources using a lens-coupled Cherenkov waveguide *** on a watt-class high-power,λ∼13.7μm quantum cascade laser,the monolithic THz source is strongly coupled with a high-resistivity silicon lens,which causes a major increase in the THz coupling efficiency and demonstrates significant performance improvements.A room-temperature 1.5 THz device produces a 0.2 mW peak output power with a high-quality beam *** THz outcoupling efficiency using the lens-coupled scheme enabled the demonstration of a high-performance external-cavity semiconductor THz source that is tunable from 420 GHz to 2 *** external-cavity,lens-coupled device configuration can technically be assembled into a butterfly-style package for a thumb-sized,widely frequency tunable THz semiconductor source.

Colovesical fistula caused by glucocorticoid therapy for IgG4-related intrapelvic mass

IgG4-related disease(IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory disorder that can occur in almost all systemic organs and generally responds to corticosteroid treatment. We report a rare case of an IgG4-related intrapelvic mass lesion that responded to steroid therapy but caused a fistula between the sigmoid colon and bladder. A 71-year-old man was followed after treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Follow-up computed tomography(CT) incidentally depicted left hydronephrosis with an ill-demarcated intrapelvic mass lesion. This lesion was histologically diagnosed as IgG4-RD by open biopsy, and peroral steroid therapy was initiated. One month after starting steroids, a colovesical fistula was detected by follow-up CT. A colostomy and urethral catheterization were emergently performed. The patient recovered and the mass lesion was drastically minimized by the initiation of glucocorticoids; however, he still needs urethral catheterization. IgG4-RD develops in various systemic organs and generally responds well to steroids. Clinicians must be watchful for the complications of responses to corticosteroids, such as fistulization, when the mass lesion of IgG4-RD is adjacent to multiple luminal organs.

＜正＞Kaki （Japanese persimmon;Diospyros kaki） is one of the most familiar fruit trees in Japan. It has been frequently planted in house gardens since the ancient times. Kinoshita （2000） suggested that the most often planted edible tree that we can see today in residential area in Tokyo is kaki.1’’ In addition, kaki and a landscape with kaki tend to be connected with a nostalgic image of an autumn rural landscape. In this respect, a landscape with kaki can be seen as a Japanese "prototype-landscape." The point we have to focus on here is that common image and feeling about kaki are shared among the Japanese. It is due to our "landscape perception", a common "way of seeing" shared in a specific social group. Landscape perception is expected to change depending on various social backgrounds. This study considers how our landscape perception has been changed by analyzing the representation of kaki as an expression of landscape. Two genres of Japanese poetry, waka and haiku, are selected as analysis objects of the representation of kaki. We extracted waka and haiku containing the word "kaki" and analyzed how kaki is treated as the subject expressing the landscape, taking into consideration the character of waka and haiku. Until the early Edo era （the 17th century）, kaki and a landscape with it had rarely been composed in waka. It is because kaki had been regarded as unrefined and countrified, and the unsuitable subject for waka. In the Edo era, not only the high educated class but also general urban people had been involved in cultural activities. As cultural importance had been shifted from waka to haiku, the subjects which had not been treated, such as kaki, appeared in the cultural activities which began in the Edo era. Kaki had been composed in haiku more often than in waka. Moreover, descriptions of kaki in haiku had been more various and detailed than waka. Recovery Method of Pyrolytic Carbon Surface after Exposure to Chlorine Trifluoride Gas

An annealing process was developed for the practical recover of a purified py-rolytic carbon (PPyC) surface from damage, such as color change and peeling, due to fluorination during exposure to chlorine trifluoride gas at high tempera-tures for the cleaning of a silicon carbide chemical vapor deposition reactor. The PPyC surface was annealed at 900°C for 10 min in ambient nitrogen con-taining oxygen at the concentrations of 0.01% - 20%. The rainbow-like colored surface returned to the dark gray color of the original PPyC. Simultaneously, the thin peeled films disappeared. The Raman spectra showed that the PPyC surface chemical bonding returned to that of the original one. The oxygen concentration as low as 0.01% could recover the PPyC surface along with re-ducing the surface pit formation, when the combination of the exposure to chlorine trifluoride gas and the recovery was repeated.
