This paper describes severe plastic deformation(SPD)procedures,which are utilized to form an ultrafine-grained structure in metallic *** the SPD process,a so.i. material sample is subjected to very high loads without a significant change in sample *** the present work,the high-pressure torsion(HPT)process,as one of the SPD techniques,which achieves a high degree of deformation and ensures refinement of the microstructure,will be discussed in more *** that grain size control is accepted as a method to obtain materials with desired characteristics,an overview of the properties of ultrafine-grained titanium-based biomaterials to be used in medicine is ***,particular attention is dedicated to the influences of HPT process parameters,primarily hydrostatic pressure,and number of revolutions during torsion,on the grain size and physical and mechanical characteristics(modulus of elasticity,microhardness,and tensile properties),corro.i.n resistance,and biocompatibility of the titanium-based biomaterials.A review of the literature indicates that titanium-based materials obtained by the SPD process show improved mechanical and physical properties without lo.i.g biocompatibility and corro.i.n resistance,which suggests that these methods of obtaining implants are something that should be further developed in the future.

objective: To determine the efficacy of uterine artery ligation by the vaginal route for the management of symptomatic uterine fibroids. A pilot study had suggested that the procedure was effective. Methods: After bilateral uterine artery ligation, ultraso.i. measurements of uterine and fibroid volumes were determined at 6 and 12 months in 21 women (age, 31-49 years)-with symptomatic fibroids. The severity of symptoms was assessed preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: Mean uterine and fibroid volumes were significantly reduced at 6 and 12 months. A consistent pattern of decreased duration of menstrual blood flow was recorded. All participants who completed follow-up expressed satisfaction with treatment outcome. Conclusion: The procedure was found to be a safe, inexpensive, and effective therapeutic option for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids.

Cells,tissues,and organs are constantly subjected to the action of mechanical forces from the extracellular environment-and the nervous system is no ***-intrinsic properties such as membrane lipid compo.i.ion,abundance of mechanosensors,and cytoskeletal dynamics make cells more or less likely to sense these *** and extrinsic cues are integrated by cells and this combined information determines the rate and dynamics of membrane protrusion growth or retraction(Yamada and Sixt,2019).Cell protrusions are extensions of the plasma membrane that play crucial roles in diverse contexts such as cell migration and neuronal synapse *** the nervous system,neurons are highly dynamic cells that can change the size and number of their pre-and postsynaptic elements(called synaptic boutons and dendritic spines,respectively),in response to changes in the levels of synaptic activity through a process called *** plasticity is a hallmark of the nervous system and is present throughout our lives,being required for functions like memory formation or the learning of new motor skills(Minegishi et al.,2023;Pillai and Franze,2024).

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. on 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing Co_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of Co_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

Dynamic stress concentration in an infinitely long cylindrical cavity due to a point spherical source embedded within a fluid-saturated poroelastic formation of infinite extent

The effects of a harmo.i.ally exciting monopole source on an infinitely long cylindrical cavity embedded entirely within a fluid-saturated poroelastic formation of infinite extent are examined theoretically. it is assumed that the source is located outside the cavity at a specified distance from the borehole axis. The magnitudes of the hoop and radial stresses beside the pore pressures exerted on the interface and inside the porous medium surrounding the borehole are calculated and discussed. Biot's poroelastic modeling along with three types of boundary conditions for the cylindrical interface including the ideal fluid, empty borehole, and rigid inclusion with a hard boundary is employed for the analysis. Utilizing a proper translational addition theorem for expressing the incident spherical wave in terms of cylindrical wave expansions, the proposed boundary conditions at the interface are satisfied. Stresses are formulated by means of wave potential functions in a three-dimensional(3D) manner. The effects of the frequency and the radial distance between the source and borehole on the induced stresses are examined for the first cylindrical modes over frequency spectra. Two permeability conditions for the interface and three types of soils for the porous formation are considered throughout the analysis. To give an overall outline of the study, a numerical example is presented. The results clearly indicate that the distance is a key parameter and has considerable effects on the induced stress values. in addition, the interface permeability condition and soil characteristics play an important role in determining the dynamic response of the borehole. Finally,the obtained results are compared with the relevant analyses existing in the literature for some limit cases, and good agreement is achieved.

Geochemical Trends in Weathering Pro.i.es and Their Underlying Precambrian Basement Rocks in Akure,Southwestern Nigeria

Akure area in southwestern Nigeria falls within the basement complex underlain by migmatite,quartzite granite and *** features of these crystalline rocks and their overlying in-situ weathering pro.i.es are investigated and *** result from iCP-MS facility at the University of Malaya reveals average Sio_(2) content in quartzite(91.1%),granite(73.8%),migmatite(67.4%)and charnockite(58.6%)catego.i.e the rocks as ***_(2) contents in the weathering pro.i.es above these rocks are 61.9%,60.2%,52.2%and 54.6%*** contents in the weathering pro.i.es overlying quartzite(23.8%),granite(19.9%),migmatite(26.3%)and charnockite(24.3%)are substantially higher than the precursor *** the same order,average alkali(Na_(2)o+K_(2)o)contents in the pro.i.es are 3.38%,3.42%,3.48%and 2.68%.Chemical features of the pro.i.es reflect that there exists some correlation between the chemistry of crystalline basement and their in-situ weathering *** residual soils contain low plastic clays with kao.i.itic characteristics and compare well with other clays reported from other parts of Nigeria basement complex.

This paper proposes a mo.i.ied version of the Dwarf Mongoose optimization Algo.i.hm (iDMo) for constrained engineering design problems. This optimization technique mo.i.ies the base algo.i.hm (DMo) in three simple but effective ways. First, the alpha selection in iDMo differs from the DMo, where evaluating the probability value of each fitness is just a computational overhead and contributes nothing to the quality of the alpha or other group members. The fittest dwarf mongoose is selected as the alpha, and a new operator ω is introduced, which controls the alpha movement, thereby enhancing the exploration ability and exploitability of the iDMo. Second, the scout group movements are mo.i.ied by rando.i.ation to.i.troduce diversity in the search process and explore unvisited areas. Finally, the babysitter's exchange criterium is mo.i.ied such that once the criterium is met, the babysitters that are exchanged interact with the dwarf mongoose exchanging them to gain information about food sources and sleeping mounds, which could result in better-fitted mongooses instead of initializing them afresh as done in DMo, then the counter is reset to zero. The proposed iDMo was used to solve the classical and CEC 2020 benchmark functions and 12 continuous/discrete engineering optimization problems. The performance of the iDMo, using different performance metrics and statistical analysis, is compared with the DMo and eight other existing algo.i.hms. in most cases, the results show that solutions achieved by the iDMo are better than those obtained by the existing algo.i.hms.
