Effects of the weld microstructure and inclusions on brittle fracture initiation are investigated in a thermally aged ferritic high-nickel weld of a reactor pressure vessel head from a decommissioned nuclear power ***-welded and reheated regions mainly consist of acicular and polygonal ferrite,*** examination of Charpy V-notch impact toughness specimens reveals large inclusions(0.5-2.5μm)at the brittle fracture primary initiation *** impact energies were measured for the specimens in which brittle fracture was initiated from a small inclusion or an inclusion away from the *** density,geometry,and chemical composition of the primary initiation inclusions were investigated.A brittle fracture crack initiates as a microcrack either within the multiphase oxide inclusions or from the debonded interfaces between the uncracked inclusions and weld metal *** fracture sites can be determined in all the specimens tested in the lower part of the transition curve at and below the 41-J reference impact toughness energy but not above the mentioned value because of the changes in the fracture mechanism and resulting changes in the fracture appearance.

BACKGROUND Defect treatment with tendon autograft in osteochondral lesions has been published in the literature with an experimental study in *** demonstrate that it is possible to treat knee osteochondral lesions with the technique of autologous tendon *** To evaluate the clinical and radiological results of patients with knee osteochondral lesions who were treated with autologous tendon *** Twenty patients(22 knees)with osteochondritis dissecans(OCD)lesions involving the knee were treated with autologous tendon transplantation between *** lesions were International Cartilage Repair Society grade *** patients were evaluated clinically at final follow-up with knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score(KOOS);and radiologically with magnetic resonance observation and cartilage repair tissue(MOCART)and Kellgren-Lawrence(KL)*** A total of 20 patients(22 knees)with a mean age of 25.5±6.8 years were *** average defect size was 4.2±2.1 cm^(2),and the average defect depth was 0.9±0.4 *** KOOS score was preoperatively 29.4±5.5 and was later found to be 81.5±5.9 after an average of 68.7±37.7 mo *** mean MOCART score was 56.2±***,all of the patients had KL grades of 0-1;during the follow-up period,80% of the patients showed no radiological progress of *** with less than 4 cm^(2) lesion had statistically significantly better overall KOOS than patients whose more than 4 cm^(2) lesion,particularly in sport and quality of life *** The autologous tendon transplantation is a single-step,safe,simple,cost-effective method for the treatment of knee OCD with satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes,particularly in patients with less than 4 cm^(2) lesion.

This study investigates the use of glass fiber-reinforced polyester(GRP)pipe powder(PP)for improving the bearing capacity of sandy *** a series of direct share tests,the optimum PP addition for improving the bearing capacity of soils was found to be 12%.Then,using the optimum PP addition,the bearing capacity of the soil was estimated through a series of loading tests on a shallow foundation model placed in a test *** bearing capacity of sandy soil was improved by up to 30.7%.The ratio of the depth of the PP-reinforced soil to the diameter of the foundation model(H/D)of 1.25 could sufficiently strengthen sandy soil when the optimum PP ratio was *** analyses showed that the increase in the bearing capacity can be attributed to the chopped fibers in the PP and their multiaxial distribution in the *** improving the engineering properties of soils,using PP as an additive in soils would reduce the accumulation of the industrial waste,thus providing a twofold benefit.

AIM: To examine the expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) and oncoprotein Bcl-2 in advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients,and to determine their mutual relationship,association to therapeutic response and impact on disease ***: Tumor samples from 67 patients with CRC,who were treated at advanced stage with either irinotecan alone or in combination with 5-fluorouracil/ leucovorin,were analyzed for expression of TS and Bcl-2 using ***: A significant linear correlation between lower expression levels of Bcl-2 and lower levels of TS expression was found (P = 0.033).Patients with high levels of both TS and Bcl-2 expression had a significantly longer disease-free survival (DFS) (42.6 mo vs 5.4 mo,n = 25) than those with low TS/Bcl-2 index (P = 0.001).Tumors with low levels of both TS and Bcl-2 were associated with a longer survival with metastasis (WMS) interval in the whole patients group (n = 67,P = 0.035).TS/Bcl-2 index was not significantly related to disease-specific ***: The present data suggest that CRC patients with low TS/Bcl-2 demonstrate a significantly shorter DFS and longer WMS.

Thermal Energy Storage Characteristics of Myristic and Stearic Acids Eutectic Mixture for Low Temperature Heating Applications

Stearic acid (67.83℃) and myristic acid (52.32℃) have high melting temperatures that can limit their use as phase change material (PCM) in low temperature solar heating applications such as solar space and greenhouse heating in regard to climatic requirements. However, their melting temperatures can be adjusted to a suitable value by preparing a eutectic mixture of the myristic acid (MA) and the stearic acid (SA). In the present study, the thermal analysis based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique shows that the mixture of myristic acid (MA) and stearic acid (SA) in the respective composition (by mass) of 64% and 36% forms a eutectic mixture having melting temperature of 44.13℃ and the latent heat of fusion of 182.4J·g-1. The thermal energy storage characteristics of the MA-SA eutectic mixture filled in the annulus of two concentric pipes were also experimentally established. The heat recovery rate and heat charging/discharging fractions were determined with respect to the change in the mass flow rate and the inlet temperature of heat transfer fluid. Based on the results obtained by DSC analysis and by the heat charg- ing/discharging processes of the PCM, it can be concluded that the MA-SA eutectic mixture is a potential material for low temperature thermal energy storage applications in terms of its thermo-physical and thermal characteristics.

AIM To collect data from joint replacement in inhibitor patients, evaluate haemostatic and patient outcomes, and analyse the *** We report our 21-year, single-centre cumulative experience of 15 joint arthroplasties in six inhibitor *** Two low responder inhibitor patients were in the early days treated with FVIII, whereas bypassing agents were used in the rest of the high responder patients. The primary haemostatic outcome was good in 8/15, fair in 4/15 and poor in 3/15 operations. The overall patient outcome, including joint health and patient satisfaction, was good in 10/15, fair 4/15 and poor in 1/15. No deep infections were observed. Cost analysis was most beneficial in low responders and in two immune-tolerized, high responder patients. In all cases, factor replacement comprised the main treatment *** Our experience supports the initial use of bypassing agents as well as preoperative immune-tolerance induction when possible. Despite the challenges of haemostasis and severe joint disease, total joint arthroplasty can reach a good outcome, even in inhibitor patients. The risk for deep infection might be smaller than previously reported. Individual planning, intense multidisciplinary teamworkand execution of operations should be centralised in a professional unit.

Altered spontaneous contractions of the ileum by anesthetic agents in rats exposed to peritonitis

AIM： To investigate in vitro effects of propofol, midazolam and dexmedetomidine, which are commonly used anaesthesic or sedatives, on spontaneous contractions of the ileum both in normal rats and those exposed to hyperdynamic peritonitis.METHODS： Spontaneous contractions of isolated ileum muscle segments from sham operated rats and those exposed to peritonitis, were studied in vitro. The amplitude and the frequency of spontaneous contractions of ileum muscle segments were studied after adding dexmetetomidine, propofoi, and midazolam to the organ bath in a cumulative manner.RESULTS： Both amplitude （85.2 ± 6.6 vs 47.4 ± 7.1） and frequency （32.8 ± 4.6 vs 20.2 ± 3.9） of spontaneous contractions in ileum smooth muscle segments were decreased significantly in the peritonitis group compared to the control group （P 〈 0.05）. Dexmedetomidine significantly increased the amplitude of spontaneous contractions （85.2 ± 6.6 vs 152.0 ± 5.4, P 〈 0.05） whereas, propofol （85.2 ± 6.6 vs 49.6 ± 4.8, P 〈 0.05） and midazolam （85.2 ± 6.6 vs 39.2 ± 4.5, P 〈 0.05） decreased it in both control and peritonitis groups. The frequency of spontaneous contractions were significantly decreased by propofol in both control （32.8 ± 4.6 vs 18.2 ± 3.4, P 〈 0.05） and peritonitis groups 20.2 ± 3.9 vs 11.6 ± 3.2, P 〈 0.05）. Dexmedetomidine and midazolam did not cause significant changes in the number of spontaneous contractions in both control and the peritonitis groups （P 〉 0.05）.CONCLUSION： Propofol, midazolam and dexmede- tomidine have various in vitro effects on spontaneous contractions of the rat ileum. While dexmedetomidine augments the spontaneous contraction of the rat ileum, propofol attenuates it. However, the effects of these compounds were parallel in both control and peritonitis groups.

Mechanical properties and microstructure of composites produced by recycling metal chips

In this study, the processing and mechanical properties of porous metal matrix composites(MMCs) composed of spheroidal cast iron chips(GGG40) and bronze chips(CuSn10) and formed by hot isostatic pressing were investigated. Bronze chips(CuSn10) were used as a matrix component, and spheroidal cast iron(GGG40) chips were used as a reinforcement component. The MMCs were produced with different CuSn10 contents(90 wt%, 80 wt%, 70 wt%, and 60 wt%). The hot isostatic pressing process was performed under three different pressures and temperatures. The produced MMCs were characterized using density tests, Brinell hardness tests, and compression tests. In addition, the consolidation mechanism was investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The test results were compared with those for bulk CuSn10 and bulk GGG40. Mechanical tests results revealed that the metallic chips can be recycled by using hot pressing and that the mechanical properties of the produced MMCs were similar to those of bulk CuSn10. XRD and microscopy studies showed that no intermetallic compounds formed between the metallic chips. The results showed that the CuSn10 and GGG40 chips were consolidated by mechanical interlocking.

The first photometric solution in the B,V,Rcand Icfilters of the short period V1833 Ori eclipsing binary is presented based on new ground-based CCD photometric *** analyzed the BVRI photometric light curves of the system,using PHOEBE 0.31 a,a binary star modeling program,with the Wilson-Devinney method based on Roche geometry to achieve the best accordance with the photometric observations to determine their absolute parameters from the light *** updated the ephemeris of V1833 Ori using two new light curve minima derived by our new observational data from those collected in the literature and analyzed the change of the system’s orbital *** O-C analysis indicates that the variations of the orbital period of V1833 Ori with time are increasing at a rate of 3.03 ×10-7days *** distance of V1833 Ori is 173.7 ± 15.6 *** the solutions,we find that V1833 Ori is an A-subtype W UMa overcontact binary with q=0.701 mass ratio and f=1.14 fill-out *** HR diagram positions of the eclipsing binary system’s components are *** system’s absolute dimensions were compared to those of similar binaries in the log Teff-log L,logM-logL,1 ogM-logR and logM-log J0diagrams.

AIM:During liver regeneration cellular proliferation and apoptosis result in tissue remodeling to restore normal hepatic mass and *** regulators of the apoptotic machinery are the Bcl-2 family proteins but their roles are not well defined throughout the liver *** aimed to analyze the expression levels of bcl-2gene family members during resection induced liver regeneration. METHODS:We performed semi-quantitative RT-PCR to examine the expression level of bak,bax,bcl-2 and bcl-x_L in 70% hepatectomized rat livers during the whole regeneration process and compared to that of the sham and normal groups. RESULTS:The expression of bak and bax was decreased whereas that of bcl-2and bd-X_L was increased in hepatectomized animals compared to normal liver at most time *** also reported for the first time that sham group of animals had statistically significant higher expression of bak and bax than hepatectomized *** addition,the area under the curve (AUC) values of these genes was larger in sham groups than the hepatectomized groups. CONCLUSION:The expression changes of bak,bax,bcl-2 and bcl-X_L genes are altered not only due to regeneration, but also due to effects of surgical operations.
