Non-Infectious Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis in Senegal

Introduction: Senegal has pioneered the implementation of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in West Africa, practicing it since 2004. Non-infectious complications are a significant cause of failure of this technique and the transfer of patients to haemodialysis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the different types of non-infectious complications in our context. Patients and Methods: This was a 5-year, descriptive, retrospective study of patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis for more than 3 months. Results: During the study period, 75 patients were included. The prevalence of non-infectious complications was 88%, including 45.3% mechanical complications and 76% metabolic complications. Catheter migration was the most common mechanical complication (55.9%), followed by catheter blockage (23.5%). Metabolic complications were dominated by hypoalbuminemia (76.3%). Dyslipidaemia and hypokalaemia affected more than 50% of patients, occurring in 59.3% and 56.9% of cases, respectively. Conclusion: In our study, non-infectious complications related to PD were frequent and varied. They remain a significant cause of technical failure. Mechanical complications are often the cause of permanent transfer to haemodialysis.

In vitro Propagation of Walnut （Juglans regia） by Nodal Explants

Micropropagation techniques were set up for walnut. Many plantlets were obtained by culturing node explants in MS medium,with 30 g/L sucrose, 7 g/L agar, and different concentrations of ba or Kin alone and different concentrations of ba ＋ NAA or ba ＋ Kin. ba at concentration （2 mg L-1 ba） gave the best results in percentage response and number of shoots/plant （100%, 2.84） respectively. While, Kin at 3 mg L-1 gave the highest average shoot length （2.81 cm）. However, MS medium supplemented with 2.5 mg L-1 ＋ 0.5 mg L-1 Kin gave the best results compared with all treatment shoot/explants and the highest number of leaves/explants （3.7, 8.2） respectively. While the highest length of shoot （4.7 cm） in MS medium supplemented with 3 mg L-1 Kin. and a high rooting percentage up to 60% at MS medium supplemented with 1 mg L-1 Iba （Indole-3-butyric acid） was obtained.

Structural and Lithological Study of Gold Mineralization in the Areas of Bena and bakolobi, Mali, West Africa

The areas of Bena-bakolobi are located in the eastern part of the Kedougou-Kenieba in layer. This sector contains several deposits of gold, including the mines of Sadiola, complex Gara-Yalea and Gounkoto, gold mines of Tabakoto and the gold deposit of Fekola, all located around the (SMS) Senegalo Malian shear zone. The work carried out is summarized in two parts: The first part is based on the detailed mapping of the Bena and bakolobi target. It was necessary to make a detailed mapping in order to understand and assess the target. The second part is to determine the term and the litho-structural control of gold mineralization. This study is based on lithology, alteration, structures and mineralization of the two areas. The ultimate purpose is to draw a regolith map for a future research program. Two types of alteration affect the rock formations of the two zones: weathering (supergene) that consists in hematization, limonitisation and the kaolinitization. The hydrothermal alteration consists in albitization, chloritisation, the sericitization, the tourmalinisation, the sulphidation, silicification and carbonation. This paper improves structural and lithological study of gold mineralization in the areas of Bena and bakolobi. The analysis of the results of the work carried out in the two zones allowed us to have an overview on the geology of these two zones, which are located in the Kédougou-Kéniéba window in the volcano-sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic Formation of Kofi. The lithological and structural studies carried out in the area have demonstrated the relationship between structures and mineralization and/or lithology.

The structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of pure and Fe-Co co-doped ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3, (ba(1-x)SrxTiO3, where (x = 0.10) and (ba0.9Sr0.1Ti(1-x-y)FexCoyO3), where (x = 0.1, y = 0) and (x = 0 and y = 0.10) and (x = 0.5, y = 0.5) in powder form, abbreviated as (BST) and (BST10FO), (BST10CO) and (BST5F5CO), respectively were prepared by a modified sol gel technique. Crystallization, surface morphology and electrical behavior of BST are improved by Fe3+ and Co2+ ions with optimized grain size. Phase identification by using X-ray diffraction and surface morphology will be studied by using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope imaging (SEM). The nano-scale presence and the formation of the tetragonal perovskite phase as well as the crystallinity were detected using the mentioned techniques. The dielectric properties of the prepared samples have been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The dielectric measurements are carried out in the frequency range of 42 Hz - 1 MHz, at temperature ranging between 25°C and 250°C. The results showed an abrupt decrease in the dielectric permittivity by increasing the frequency range. The magnetic hysteresis loop confirmed enhancement in the magnetization properties by co-doping with Fe3+-Co2+ ions. An increase in the saturation of the magnetization at room temperature was detected by decreasing the crystallite sizes of the prepared samples.

Transgenic Date Palm Containing Endotoxin Cry3Aa Gene

Date palm, like all other crops, is very sensitive to the injury by many insect pests, which may lead to the death of the affected plant and causes decrease in yield. In the present study, an efficient Agrobacterium for genetic transformation was successfully achieved for well known date palm （Phoenix dactylifera L.） cv. Medjool and Khalas using callus as explant. Embryogenic callus were recorded 100% mortality when cultured on MS medium containing 100 mg/L kanamycin with different cultivars, thus it was chosen for the selection of transformed explants. Embryogenic callus of Medjool and Khalas were incubated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain Lba 4404 for 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 24 h on LB medium. After the incubation periods, embryogenic callus was transferred to MS medium with 0.1 mg/L NAA, 0.05 mg/L ba, 250 mg/L carbenicillin and 100 mg/L kanamycin for detection of transgenic embryogenic callus. Polymerase chain reaction （PCR） was used for the rapid screening of Cry3Aa gene. For screening, total genomic DNA was isolated from transformants. Using primer specific to Cry3Aa gene （forward and reverse）, a PCR product with a size of about 2,000 bp was amplified when all nucleic acid from the transformants were utilized as templates. PCR analysis confirmed the appearance of the transgene of 2,000 bp in one individual plantlet. Presence and integration of foreign Cry3Aa gene in regenerated kanamycin resistant embryogenic callus was also confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. It was found that one transgenic embryogenic callus for both Medjool and Khalas showed a single copy of gene integration. These results signify the successful transfer of Cry3Aa gene into date palm plant.

Polymeric biomaterial hydrogels. I. Behavior of some ionotropic cross-linked metal-alginate hydrogels especially copper-alginate membranes in some organic solvents and buffer solutions

The change in rheological and mechanical properties for some ionotropic cross-linked metal-alginate hydrogel complexes in particularly copper-alginate membranes in the presence of some organic solvents (benzene, toluene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, ace-tone, chloroform, dichloroethane, isobutyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol) or buffer solutions (acetates, borates and universal buffers) have been investigated. The experimental results showed a remarkable tendency of the studied hydrogels for shrinking in polar solvents, whereas no influence was observed for the hydrogels in non-polar solvents. On the other hand, the gels were found to swell or shrink in the buffer solutions depending on the pH of the buffer used. The swelling extent for hydrogel spheres was found to decrease in the order Cu > ba ≈ Ca > Zn > Pb-alginates in universal buffers of pH = 5.33. The factors affected this behavior have been examined and discussed.

The Distribution and Accretion of Some Heavy Metals in Makkah Wells

The aim of this study is to determine the types of heavy metals frequently present in Makkah wells and the possible environmental causes of their distribution and accumulation. Makkah lies in a mountain range dominated by different types of rocks from the Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic eras, as well as subordinate sedimentary rocks and basaltic lava flow from the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. Natural contaminants in Makkah wells water can be attributed to the unique location. Many epidemiological studies have identified associations between the ingestion of wells water contaminated with heavy metals and increased risk of some illnesses. This study presents exclusive information on the levels and distribution of 9 heavy metals—arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, and selenium—in the wells water in various rural and urban areas of Makkah city. These naturally occurring elements are considered significant markers of water purity. More than 160 wells were involved in this three-year investigation. Water samples were collected during different seasons in order to assess any changes in the distribution and concentration of these heavy metals throughout the year. The collected water samples were filtered and digested before analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). We found the following sequence of concentrations of heavy metals in the studied wells: ba > Se >Cr > As > Co > Cu> Hg > Pb > Cd. Arsenic, barium, chromium, and selenium were the most abundant contaminants in the wells studied. The concentrations of the other heavy metals ranged from non-detectable to 3 μg/L. Although low, these values are also reported in comparisons with the local and international strict values and standards which govern the maximum contaminant levels permitted for long-term daily consumption.

Determination of the somaclonal variation of in vitro-propagated plants is crucial to determine the appropriate micropropagation protocol and growth regulators for commercial scale *** this research,nine multiplication media(MM)augmented with different concentrations of 6-benzyl adenine(ba),Kinetin(Kin),and Thidiazuron(TDZ),Three rooting media(RM)supplemented with three levels ofα-naphthalene acetic acid(NAA)and three types of soil mixtures(v/v);Coco peat/Vermiculite/Sand(CVS),Peat moss/Perlite/Sand(PPS)and Peat moss/Perlite(PP)were used in the micropropagation protocol of daylily ***2 showed the maximum shoot length and the number of leaves,while MM9 showed the maximum number of *** RM1 showed the maximum root length and the number of *** acclimatization,CVS,PPS,and PP soil mixture showed similar performance except the CVS mixture showed lower performance regarding plant height and *** genetic fidelity of micropropagated plants was evaluated using Start Codon Targeted(SCoT)*** SCoT primers amplified 51 scorable bands with an approximate range from 146 bp to 1598 bp *** one out of 51 loci were presented in the mother plants.40 loci were polymorphic,11 were monomorphic and 7 were *** amplification patterns of the micropropagated plants demonstrated genetic integrity to the mother plant ranging from 84.32 to 47.06 and somaclonal variations ranging from 52.94 with 5 mg/l ba pathway to 15.68 with 1mg/l TDZ pathway,thus demonstrating that the homogeneity and the variation of the micropropagated plants affected by the type and the quantity of the plant growth regulator used during multiplication *** research can be successfully used for other ornamental and medicinal plants’bulk multiplication,germplasm conservation,and future genetic improvement.

Study the Structural, Electronic, Optical Properties of CZTS Compound after Doping ba at Zn Site and Si at Sn Site Using Density Functional Theory (DFT)

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of Cu2Zn1−xbaxSn1−ySiyS4 compounds have been calculated using GGA-PBE function within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT). In the present work, lattice parameters remained the same, that is tetragonal crystal structure for 0% and 100% doping concentration. The electronic band gap of Cu2Zn1−xbaxSn1−ySiyS4 compounds has been gradually increased for continuous increment of doping concentration where the highest electronic band gap is 1.117 eV for Cu2baSiS4 structure. Moreover, the band gap changes from direct to indirect band gap with the increase of doping concentration in the parent compound. The absorption coefficient has been found to be high (> 104 cm−1) in UV-region for all the doping concentration which makes the studied compound as a potential candidate of absorber layer in the UV detector. The theoretical study of the effect of double doping in the CZTS compound is very interesting for improving the quality of it and it would be a reference for the theoretical and experimental researchers.

为探究生物炭长期施入对土壤有机碳(SOC)及其活性组分的影响,通过室内培养试验,比较短期(1个月)施用生物炭(BF)和生物炭施入3 a(ba)对SOC及其组分的影响。结果表明:生物炭施入显著提高了SOC、颗粒有机碳(POC)、易氧化有机碳(EOC)、轻组有机碳(LFOC)和微生物生物量碳(MBC)含量。相比不施生物炭处理(CK),施用生物炭处理土壤的POC、EOC、LFOC和MBC分别增加了97.5%~241.5%、21.8%~59.4%、66.8%~202.7%和83.7%~199.9%。相较于BF,ba的SOC、EOC、POC和MBC含量显著降低,但溶解性有机碳(DOC)含量显著升高。相较于CK,施生物炭土壤的碳库管理指数(CPMI)显著提高,培养1个月的1%生物炭(BF1)和2%生物炭(BF2)及培养3 a的1%生物炭(ba1)和2%生物炭(ba2)处理的CPMI值分别提高了48.81%、89.73%、54.66%和157.48%。相关分析显示,MBC、POC、LFOC及EOC含量与SOC含量显著正相关。综上所述,施用生物炭能实现土壤固碳,但随着施用年限延长,CPMI显著降低,从而降低了SOC的稳定性。
