A six-year descriptive epidemiological study of human coronavirus infections in hospitalized patients in Hong Kong

We conducted a six-year epidemiological study on human coronaviruses（HCoVs） circulating in Hong Kong, using 8275 nasopharyngeal samples.f.om patients with acute respiratory tract infections. HCoVs were detected in 77（0.93%） of the samples by a pan-HCoV RT-PCR assay. The most frequently detected HCoV species was HCoV-OC43（0.58%）, followed by HCoV-229E（0.15%）,HCoV-HKU1（0.13%） and HCoV-NL63（0.07%）. HCoVs were detected throughout the study period（september 2008–August 2014）, with the highest detection rate from september 2010 to August2011（22/1500, 1.47%）. Different seasonal patterns of each HCoV species in Hong Kong were ***-OC43 was predominant in the fall and winter, whereas HCoV-HKU1 showed peak activity in winter, with a few cases occurred in spring and summer. HCoV-229 E mainly occurred in winter and spring, while HCoV-NL63 was predominant in summer and autumn. HCoVs most commonly infect the elderly and young children, with median age of 79.5 years（range, 22 days to 95 years）.Intriguingly, the detection rate of HCoV-OC43 in the age group of ＆gt; 80 years（26/2380, 1.09%） was significantly higher than that in the age group of 0–10 years（12/2529, 0.47%）（P 〈 0.05）. These data provides new insight into the epidemiology of coronaviruses.

We report two female infants with congenital midline supraumbilical raphes who subsequently developed haemangiomas on the lower lip and gingiva within the first 2 months of life. One was.f.und to have a subglottic haemangioma during *** infants were otherwise well and had normal chest X- ray, echocardiogram, cranial ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging/angiography (head, neck, chest) and ophthalmological examination. Both received oral prednisolone 1- 2 mg kg- 1 daily and four sessions of flashlamp pulsed- dye laser therapy to the lip lesions, with significant improvement. The initial presentation of these two infants with supraumbilical raphes,who were otherwise healthy and without other cutaneous stigmata,suggested the diagnosis of isolated congenital sternal malformation. However, lower lip and gingival haemangiomas developed 4- 6 weeks later, consistent with the diagnosis of PHACEs syndrome. Children with sternal malformation and haemangiomamay also have intracranial and/or cardiovascular anomalies. All previously reported patients were females who had either craniofacial and/or multiple haemangiomas. We propose guidelines.f.r the evaluation and management of a neonate presenting with a sternal fusion defect at birth.

The production of biomass pellets and briquettes.f.om agroforestry residues has increased rapidly in recent years. The design of machines, equipment and the infrastructure necessary for the handling, trans port and storage of these products has been an engineering challenge since, when moving, biomass does not usually flow as easily as other granular materials. The discrete element method （DEM） provides a means of studying the handling and silo discharge behaviour of granular solids as well as the distribution of the pressures exerted by such materials in silos. However, the development of such models requires certain properties of the particles in question to be known. The present work experimentally determines the true density, Young＇s modulus of elasticity （axial and radial）, the particleparticle restitution coeffi cient and the particlewall friction coefficientall variables that must be known in the construction of DEM modelsfor briquettes made from maize stalk, maize stalk plus pine wood chips, rice husk, vine shoots, raoe straw, cereal straw and sawdust olus cereal straw.

sTUDY ON PREPARATION Of sUPPORTED ALUMINA MEMBRANE UsING sOL- GEL METHOD

A stable colloidal boehmite sol was made with the aluminium iso propoxide made in China and used to prepare the supported γ alumina membrane using sol gel method. The γ alumina thin layer was characterized by sEM, N 2 sorption method and permeation measurement. The γ alumina membrane was prepared with uniform surface, thickness of 3 μm and average diameter of about 5 nm. The permeabilities of the single gases of H 2, N 2, Ar and their separation factors were measured. The experimental data explained a behavior of Knudsen diffusion for the gas transport through the thin membrane.

Atmospheric reentry vehicles and planetary probes.f.y through the atmosphere at hypervelocity speed. At such speed, there is a significant proportion of heat load to the vehicle surface due to radiative heating. Accurate prediction needs a good knowledge of the radiation spectrum properties. In this paper, a high-speed camera and spectrograph coupled to an intens.f.ed charge-coupled device have bee n impleme nted to inv estigate the rad i at io n flow over a semi-cylinder model. The experiments were carried out in the Jf16 expansi on timnel with secondary shock velocity of 7.9 km·s^-1. Results show that the emissio n spectrum comprises several atomic lines and molecular band systems. We give detailed data of the radiation spectrum, shock shape, shock detached distance and radiation intensity varying with space and wavelength. This valuable experimental dataset will be helpful to validate computational fluid dynamics codes and radiation models, which equates to increased prediction accuracy of radiation heating. Also, some suggestions.f.r spectral measurement in hypervelocity flow field were list in the end.

strong>Background: strong>The formation of kidney stones is considered a complicated process. Consequently, there are many questions about the link between kidney stones.f.rmation and level of salivary uric acid and calculus.f.rmation on the teeth surfaces. strong>Objectives:strong> To evaluate the correlation between the level of salivary uric acid and kidney stones.f.rmation and their influence on dental calculus and periodontal status among saudi patients aged 25 - 70 years. strong>Materials and Methods:strong> 120 saudi male patients were examined (60 of Kidney stones patients and 60 patients of non-kidney stones patients) for clinical evaluation of plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI), calculus index of oral hygiene (CI) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Moreover, lab assessment of uric acid level in the collected salivary samples was done. The findings were analyzed using of ANOVA test and Tukey’s test. strong>Results:strong> There were statistically significant differences in clinical parameters among kidney stones patients and non-kidney stones patients (p se differences were highly statistically significant in the correlation between calculus index (CI), plaque index (PLI) and gingival index (GI) among kidney stone patients in group II, moreover, PLI and clinical attachment loss (CAL) among kidney stone patients in group III (p statistical analyses revealed statistically significant differences in the level of salivary uric acid (mg/dl) in the comparison between kidney stones patients and non-kidney stones patients in group I and group III, whereas there were highly statistically significant in the comparison between kidney stones patients and non-kidney stones patients in group III. strong>Conclusion:strong> At the end of this study, we concluded that there was a relationship between dental calculus.f.rmation, kidney stones.f.rmation, and an increase in the level of salivary uric acid.

The europium heptadentate coordinatively unsaturated (Eu(III)) and the terbium (Tb(III)) 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) complexes 1 and 2 were used in conjunction with ligand 3 (1,3,5-benzene-trisethynylbenzoate) to form the supramolecular self-assembly structures 4 and 5;this being investigated in both the solid and the solution state. The resulting self-assemblies gave rise to metal centered emission (both in the solid and solution) upon excitation of 3, confirming its role as a sensitizing antenna. Drop-cased examples of ligand 3, and the solid forms of 4 and 5, formed from both organic and mixture of organic-aqueous solutions, were analyzed using scanning Electron Microscopy, which showed significant changes in morphology;the ligand giving rise to one dimensional structures, while both 4 and 5 formed amorphous materials that were highly dense solid networks containing nanoporous.f.atures. The surface area (216 and 119 m2·g^-1 for 4 and 5 respectively) and the ability of these porous materials to capture and store gases such as N2 investigated at 77 K. The self-assembly formation was also investigated in diluted solution by monitoring the various photophysical properties of 3–5. This demonstrated that the most stable structures were that consisting of a single antennae 3 and three complexes of 1 or 2 (e.g., 4 and 5) in solution. By monitoring the excited state lifetimes of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) ions in H2O and D2O respectively, we showed that their hydration states (the q-value) changed from -2 to 0, upon formation of the assemblies, indicating that the three benzoates of 3 coordinated directly to the each of the three lanthanide centers. finally we demonstrate that this hierarchically porous materials can be used for the sensing of organic solvents as the emission is highly depended on the solvent environment;the lanthanide emission being quenched in the presence of acetonitrile and THf, but greatly enhanced in the presence of methanol.
