Objective:To evaluate the performance of preliminary phytochemical,antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Dracaena cinnabari Balf.f.(Agavaceae)(***)resin,collected from Socotra Island(Yemen).Methods:The powdered stem resin is extracted with different solvents by using Soxhlet apparatus and evaluated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against three Gram positive bacteria(Bacillus cereus NCIM 2106,Staphylococcus aureus NCIM 2127,and Micrococcus luteus NCIM 2169),seven Gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coli NCIM 2924,Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCIM 2863,Salmonella typhimurium NCIM 2501,Klebsiella aerogenes NCIM 2281,Proteus morganii NCIM 2860,Escherichia coli dh5α,Escherichia coli CSH)and three fungi(Candida albicans MTCC 227,Aspergillus flavus MTCC 873,Aspergillus niger MTCC 1781).Results:The antimicrobial activity data revealed that,the selected microorganisms possess varied sensitivity response to chloroform extract followed by methanol and benzene extract of *** stem *** samples also possess a potent DPPH,OH and SO radical scavenging *** addition,the preliminary phytochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids and other organic compounds which could be reason for antimicrobial activities of *** ***:The present study is strengthened for the discovery and development of new antioxidant and antimicrobial drugs from *** resin which encourage us to continue with pure fractions.

Utilization of Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) with Silica Fume (SF) as a Partial Replacement of Cement in Concrete Production

This research aimed to clarify the role of by-product materials, such as CKD with SF as partial replacement by weight of cement in concrete manufacturing and inclusion on different characteristics of concrete. Concrete test specimens were mixed with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% (CKD) with 15% (SF) as partial replacement by weight of Cement (CEM I-52.5N). Fresh concrete properties have been evaluated by workability measurement slump test. While hardened concrete properties have been evaluated by compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths tests at ages 7, 28 and 56 days, but evaluated for bond strength, modulus of elasticity and chemical composition measurement with X-Ray Fluorescence at age of 28 days. The test results have revealed that the increase of CKD amount with fixed amount of SF in concrete mixtures as partial replacement by weight of cement leads to gradual decrease of fresh concrete workability. In concrete mixtures, 20% CKD in the presence of 15% SF as partial replacement by the weight of cement are the optimum ratios which can be used without any negative effect on mechanical properties compressive, indirect tensile, flexural and bond strength at all the ages of concrete. Also modulus of elasticity and bond strength increased by 8.81% and 0.69% respectively at the age 28 days compared with control mixture.

Background: Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare multi-system genomic disorder, caused by 7q11.23 microdeletion with a prevalence of 1/7500 - 1/20,000 live births. Clinical phenotype includes typical facial dysmorphism (elfin face), mental retardation associated with a peculiar neuropsychological profile and congenital heart defects. Other signs are occasional like ocular, skeletal, renal and dental anomalies. Here in, we present 38 WBS Tunisian patients. Methods: All patients underwent a genetic consultation and in order to confirm the clinical diagnosis of WBS, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was applied on metaphase spreads using the dual color locus specific identifier WBS region probe (Vysis probe) that hybridized to the elN and LIMK1 loci at 7q11.23 and to control loci D7S486 and D7S522 at 7q31. About 15 to 20 metaphases were analyzed for each case. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 4 years and 4 months. All patients showed facial dysmorphism. 66% (23/35) have cardiovascular anomaly, peripheral pulmonary stenosis (10/35) is interestingly more frequent than the supravalvular aortic stenosis (7/35). Various degrees of mental retardation were present and a normal intelligence was found in three patients. The unique cognitive profile was found in all patients except one who had autistic disorders. Ocular anomalies (13/38) were less frequent than described, the skeletal anomalies too (12/38). Dental malformations were frequent (22/32). Idiopathic hypercalcemia was present in 50% of children less than one year (2/4). Conclusions: WBS was a rare disorder, cardinal signs (facial dysmorphism, mental retardation and cardiovascular defects) were found in our patients in the same proportions than described. The occasional clinical signs have proportion different of precedent reported like hypercalcemia, ocular and dental anomalies. The identification of the different clinical signs in WBS patients permits to establish a strategy of follow up.

AIM: To study the clinical presentation of Budd-Chiari syndrome(BCS) and identify the aetiologies of this disease in Algeria. METHODS: Patients with BCS, hospitalised in our unit from January 2004 until June 2010 were included and the aetiological factors were assessed. Patients presenting a BCS in the setting of advanced-stage cirrhosis or a liver transplantation were excluded from the study. The diagnosis was established when an obstruction of hepatic venous outflow(thrombosis, stenosis or compression) was demonstrated. We diagnosed myeloproliferative disease(MPD) by bone marrow biopsy and V617 F JAK2 mutation. Anti-phospholipid syndrome(APLS) was detected by the presence of anticardiolipin antibodies, anti-β2 glycoprotein antibodies and Lupus anticoagulant. We also detected paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria(PNH) by flow cytometry. Celiac disease and Behcet disease were systematically investigated in our patients. Hereditary anticoagulant protein deficiencies were also assessed. We tested our patients for the G20210 A mutation at Beaujon Hospital. Imaging procedures were performed to determine a local cause of BCS, such as a hydatid cyst or a liver ***: One hundred and fifteen patients were included. Mean follow up: 32.12 mo. Mean age: 34.41 years, M/F = 0.64. Chronic presentation was frequent:63.5%. The revealing symptoms for the BCS were ascites(74.8%) and abdominal pain(42.6%). The most common site of thrombosis was the hepatic veins(72.2%). Involvement of the inferior vena cava alone was observed in 3 patients. According to the radiological investigations, BCS was primary in 94.7% of the cases(n = 109) and secondary in 5.2%(n = 6). An aetiology was identified in 77.4% of the patients(n = 89); it was multifactorial in 27%(n = 31). The predominant aetiology of BCS in our patients was a myeloproliferative disease, observed in 34.6% of cases. APLS was found in 21.7% and celiac disease in 11.4%.
