Hydrogeochemical Characteristics and Assessment of Water Resources in Beni Suef Governorate, Egypt

The main target of this research is to investigate the hydrogeochemical characteristics of surface and groundwater resources in Beni Suef Governorate, Egypt. A combination of major and heavy metals has been used to characterize surface and groundwater in Beni Suef Governorate, Egypt. Twenty water samples were collected from the water resources: River Nile, El-Ibrahimia canal, Bahr Youssef, irrigation and drainage channels and Quaternary aquifer. The collected water samples were analyzed for major and heavy metals. Surface and groundwater in the study area are considered potable for drink and irrigation based on the TDS and major ions concentrations. Regarding the MPL quoted by the WHO [1] and FAO [2], water resources in the study area are polluted by Al, Cd, Fe, Mn, Co and Cu. The highest concentrations of Al, Cd, Fe, Mn, Co and Cu recorded in the study area were 2545, 400, 1415, 2158, 239 and 1080 μg/l, respectively. Both surface and groundwater in Beni Suef suffer from pollution due to the impact of unsupervised anthropogenic activities including: fertilizers and pesticide, waste disposal and industrial waste, seepage from septic tanks, construction of water pipes, wastewater from El-Moheet drainage and evaporation processes during flood irrigation.

Modeling Biogeochemistry, the Key for Understanding Environmental Chemistry of a Semi-Arid Soil in Egypt

Modeling geochemistry of the studied Bahtim catchment in Egypt provides a powerful tool for untangling various connections and feedbacks between atmospheric inputs, vegetation, soil and hydrology within the system. The biogeochemical PROFILE model was used to study the integrated environmental monitoring of different environmental compartments as well as calculating geochemical weathering rate. The model is in steady state and includes multi-layers which have the mineralogical, physical and chemical attributes measured for individual soil layers. In this study, the base cations (Ca+{2+}, Mg+{2+}, Na++, K++) are produced from the minerals through chemical weathering. The total chemical weathering rate of base cations is 6.5 keq+{-1}·ha+{-1}·a+{-1}. In addition, the output results indicate that a small amount of dark minerals like hornblende, pyroxene and plagioclase largely contribute the field weathering rate in Egyptian Vertisols.

Critical Loads of Heavy Metals in a Highly Polluted Catchment Area in Egypt

Heavy metals in different environmental compartments can be hazardous to ecosystems. Budgets of Cd, Pb and Zn in small ecosystems of the Shubra El-Kheima area in Egypt are presented. The budgets are not in steady state because they change with time. So the concentrations of the metals are a function of time. The critical loads of heavy metals to soils can be calculated from an inventory of inputs and outputs of the trace components in the catchment area. Critical time is an important parameter for critical load evaluation because it can indicate which of the heavy metals may be the most acute threat to the soils. Egyptian soil in the Shubra El-Kheima area seems to be in danger of heavy metal pollution by Zn, Cd and Pb. The calculated critical loads and their exceedances are approximate indicators of the hazards in the soil system. The critical time is a warning signal to initiate an environmental evaluation of possible pollution hazards.
