Edge detection is the process of determining where boundaries of objects fall within an image. So far, several standard operators-based methods have been widely used for edge detection. However, due to inherent quality of images, these methods prove ineffective if they are applied without any preprocessing. In this paper, an image preprocessing approach has been adopted in order to get certain parameters that are useful to perform better edge detection with the standard operators-based edge detection methods. The proposed preprocessing approach involves computation of the histogram, finding out the total number of peaks and suppressing irrelevant peaks. From the intensity values corresponding to relevant peaks, threshold values are obtained. From these threshold values, optimal multilevel thresholds are calculated using the Otsu method, then multilevel image segmentation is carried out. Finally, a standard edge detection method can be applied to the resultant segmented image. Simulation results are presented to show that our preprocessed approach when used with a standard edge detection method enhances its performance. It has been also shown that applying wavelet edge detection method to the segmented images, generated through our preprocessing approach, yields the superior performance among other standard edge detection methods.

Background: Cardiothoracic surgery is a common cause of acute respiratory failure and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We aimed to compare the outcomes of open heart surgery patients treated using oxygen delivery devices with patients who receive NIV as a first-line therapy for hypoxemic respiratory failure. Materials and Methods: 40 patients who developed acute hypoxemic respiratory failure after open heart surgery and admitted to cardiothoracic ICU 20 patients received NIV and 20 patient received oxygen by venture mask. For all patients the following measurements were performed before and after CPAP AND Venture use: CBC, blood urea, serum creatinine body temperature, chest X-ray, Arterial blood gases (arterial pH, sodium bicarbonate, pcO2, SpO2 and PaO2-to-FiO2 ratio). Results: Mean PO2 and SO2 have increased after using of both venture and Cpap, increase in both PCO2 and HCO3 levels after using Venturi mask, CPAP mask was superior to venturi mask in avoiding the need of intubation, decreasing The ICU stay median length and also median length of hospitalization, all were lower in CPAP group than venture group. Also the mortality rate was lower in CPAP group than the venturi group. Conclusion: Using CPAP mask in severe AHRF following open heart surgery can avoid intubation, decreases the levels of tachypnea and arterial hypoxemia, decreases ICU stay, the length of hospitalization and also decreases the mortality rate compared with patients receiving high-concentration oxygen therapy with venture mask.

Performance Assessment of Some Flax (<i>Linum usitatissimum</i>L.) Varieties Using Cluster Analysis under Sandy Soil Conditions

To assess the performance and the variability of 49 flax varieties based on agronomic parameters using cluster analysis, a field experiment was conducted in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 winter seasons at the farm of the National Research Center at Nubria district, Albehira Governorate, Egypt. The results revealed high significant difference among all flax varieties in all the studied characters. Letwania-9 and Evelen cultivars surpassed all other varieties in seed and oil yields/fed. On the other hand, D variety gave the lowest value of seed yield/fed and F variety gave the lowest values of oil% and oil yield/fed. While, G Variety surpassed all other varieties in straw yield/fed. Blanka variety recorded the lowest values of straw yield/fed and biological yield/fed, while, Posna variety gave the lowest values of technical stem length (cm). In cluster analysis, all the studied characters were used to construct a distance matrix using the Euclidian coefficient, and generate dendrogram showing dissimilarity among all the varieties. Distance coefficient was ranged from 1.2 between Piltstar and Litwania-1 varieties and 10.8 between Posna and G varieties, which reveal the genetic diversity among varieties. The varieties can be divided into 4 groups based on cluster analysis.

A field study was conducted during 2008 and 2009 at el-Khattara farm station, Zagazig Uni-versity, Sharkyia, Egypt (30°36' N, 32°15' E) to determine the effect of three N rates (214, 273, and 333 kg N ha-1), four micronutrients spray treatments (Check, Zn, Mn, and Zn + Mn), and three planting density levels ( 4.76, 5.71, and 6.66 plant m-2) on growth and grain yield of corn (Zea mays, L). The soil was sandy (Entisols) and groundwater was used for irrigation. Response to N was maximized to 214 kg ha-1 without a significant effect on most growth traits and grain yield. Agronomic efficiency of N use for grain yield was negatively related to N rate (r2 = 0.49). Application of micronutrients had no ef-fect on most growth and yield characters except a significant increase by 9.5, 8.7, and 9 % in plant weight (g plant-1), biomass yield (kg m-2), and N agronomic efficiency for biomass yield, respectively. Growth was decreased by in-creasing plant density without affecting harvest index, agronomic efficiency, biomass yield, and grain yield. The application of Zn to the highest maize plant density increased grain yield by 16 % as compared to the check. It is recommended, as predicated by the linear model, that N ferti-gation rate should be around 220 kg ha-1 with plant density of 6.66 plant m-2 accompanied by Zn application for maximum irrigated corn grain yield in sandy soil. The Egyptian Pharaonic temples are traditionally made of different stones (limestone granite, diorite, or sandstone and quartzite) shaped into large heavy blocks or as Colossal statues. One of these is the colossi of Thutmose II and Amenhotep III at Karnak temple which made out of red quartzite from Gebel el-Ahmar, located at north-east of Cairo. Quartzite is one of the famous stones that were widely used during the heights of ancient Egyptian civilization. The Colossi of Thutmose II and Amenhotep III were subjected to many exogenous and endogenous deterioration factors which causes of a severe damage of the stone materials. In this study we documented the weathering of these quartzite colossal statues using field recording and laboratory analysis to evaluate their conservation state. Weathering and deterioration aspects noted through light optical microscope (LOM), polarizing microscope (PM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The mineralogical characterization was performed using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Energy dispersive analysis (EDX). The mineralogy and weathering study of quartzite on the Colossi of Thutmose II and Amenhotep III illustrate a succession of geochemical processes which have taken place at the colossi and it revealed that, they need for quick intervention.

Assessment of Standard Criteria Implementation in Heamodialysis Water Treatment Units in Sharkia Governorate

Introduction: Haemodialysis is the most well-established form of treatment for ESRD. Method: To evaluate the implementation of standard criteria in heamodialysis water treatment units in Sharkia governorate and to determine the weak points in application of standard criteria, and reach the optimal standards to improve pt. outcomes, across the sectional study was conducted at 30 heamodialysis units of Sharkia governorate, using a modified questionnaire was developed based on MOH protocol and international guidelines such as CARI guidelines, AAMI guidelines and others by the researchers. All data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed using SPSS 22.0 for windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: Of the 30 units, the majority more than 80% of the units achieved the infrastructure and schematic structure, contain water purification devices, good infection control policies, proper chemical disinfection, good monitoring and quality control, accepted maintenance technician evaluation and collected processed water samples results matched decree of 63 for 1996. Conclusion: Most of the studied units nearly fulfilled the standard specifications of both MOH and AAMI. Ensuring that water quality meets AAMI standards and recommendations will minimize patient exposure to potential contaminants such as chemical hazards and endotoxemia associated with the use of the treated water for HD.

Laparoscopic Rectopexy;Is It Useful for Persistent Rectal Prolapse in Children?

Introduction: Rectal prolapse is a relatively common, usually self-limiting illness in children. Peak incidence is between 1 and 3 years. The intervention is required for the persistent rectal prolapse (PRP). Only scanty experience is available with laparoscopic rectopexy in children. There is no available work using both mesh and suture laparoscopic rectopexy in literature. This work is unique that it presents our clinical experience with both mesh and suture laparoscopic rectopexy in children. This is a prospective clinical study for the outcome of laparoscopic rectopexy (LRP) by both mesh and suture technique in children with persistent rectal prolapse (PRP). Materials and Methods: Fourteen cases of PRP were managed with LRP from February 2008 to August 2012. Results: Of the 14 children, 10 (71.42%) were males and 4 (28.57%) were females. Male to female ratio was 2:1. The mean age of presentation was 5 years (range 3 - 8 years). The presenting complaints were mass descending per rectum along with bleeding per rectum lasting from 1 to 3 years. All had rectal prolapse of 5 - 7 cm in length. 12 out of 14 children had recurrence even after sclerotherapy before referral to laparoscopic rectpexy. The mean duration of surgery was 30 minutes (range 20 - 60 minutes). No intraoperative complications were reported;only one case got constipation and was managed conservatively and no recurrence. Conclusion: LRP is safe, feasible in children and gives satisfactory results after failure of all conservative even sclerotherapy injection.

Nile Delta which covers approximately 60,000 square kilometers represents the most important gas province in Egypt whereas its fields provide two-thirds of the gas production in Egypt. The Nile Delta province begins to display its hydrocarbon potentiality in the early 1960s. Nidoco field is located in the shallow water offshore Nile delta. Abu Madi formation (Messinian age) is the most important formation through all the section where it represents the main gas producing reservoirs in the Field. The production of the field is coming from two sand reservoir levels;Abu Madi level 2&3 which are characterized by fluvial-deltaic sandstones. The purpose of this paper is to perceive the Messinian gas bearing reservoirs and channelized sand distribution inside Abu Madi formation using seismic attributes and amplitude versus offset (AVO) technique. The results indicated that the seismic attributes and AVO aided to give a complete picture about the Messinian reservoirs distribution and characterization in the field. Also the results show that there are still promising locations of prospective Abu Madi Level 2&3 which are proposed to be drilled in the field.

Local Search-Inspired Rough Sets for Improving Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm

In this paper we present a new optimization algorithm, and the proposed algorithm operates in two phases. In the first one, multiobjective version of genetic algorithm is used as search engine in order to generate approximate true Pareto front. This algorithm is based on concept of co-evolution and repair algorithm for handling nonlinear constraints. Also it maintains a finite-sized archive of non-dominated solutions which gets iteratively updated in the presence of new solutions based on the concept e-dominance. Then, in the second stage, rough set theory is adopted as local search engine in order to improve the spread of the solutions found so far. The results, provided by the proposed algorithm for benchmark problems, are promising when compared with exiting well-known algorithms. Also, our results suggest that our algorithm is better applicable for solving real-world application problems.
