Physiological Role of Humic Acid and Nicotinamide on Improving Plant Growth, Yield, and Mineral Nutrient of Wheat (<i>Triticum durum</i>) Grown under Newly Reclaimed Sandy Soil

Humic acid is not a fertilizer as it does not directly provide nutrients to plants, but is a compliment to fertilizer. Nicotinamide (Vitamin pp) is a stress-associated compound that can induce and regulate secondary metabolic accumulation and/or the manifestation of defense metabolism in plants. A field experiment was conducted at the experimental station of National Research center at el-Nubaria region, Egypt, to study the role of foliar application of humic acid (as soil conditioner 13 cm/l) and/or priming grains in nicotinamide (vitamin pp 5 mg/l) in saving irrigation water, decreasing fertilizer dose of NPK and at the same time increasing durum wheat (Triticum durum) cultivars’ (Beni Sweif-1 and Beni Sweif-3) productivity grown under newly reclaimed sandy soil exposed to drought for three weeks continuously. The results showed that plant treated with humic acid or nicotinamide increased significantly all morphological criteria (plant height, leaves number, fresh and dry weights of shoots), metabolism (photosynthetic pigment, total soluble sugar, total carbohydrates, total amino acids and proline), mineral contents (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and yield (grain, straw and biology) of both cultivars amended with either recommended or half recommended doses of NPK. Foliar application of humic acid to plant priming in Vitamin pp induced significant increases in all studied parameters (morphology, chemical and yield) of plants amended with recommended or half recommended doses of NPK as compared with control plants. The maximum yields of grain, straw and biology of both cultivars were obtained in response to triple treatment (humic acid + nicotinamide + recommended dose of NPK) or (humic acid + nicotinamide + half recommended dose of NPK) respectively.

Noninvasive Fibrosis Scores as Prognostic Markers for Varices Needing Treatment in Advanced Compensated Liver Cirrhosis

Background/purpose: Noninvasive assessment of esophageal varices (EVs), their size and bleeding stigmata may reduce endoscopic burden, cost and drawbacks. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of noninvasive fibrosis scores (AAR, APRI, FIB-4, King and VITRO scores) in predicting the presence of EVs and high risk varices needing treatment (VNT) in HCV-related cirrhosis of Egyptian patients. Methods: This prospective study included 154 HCV-related advanced compensated cirrhotic patients with no history of bleeding who underwent screening endoscopy for EVs. AAR, APRI, FIB-4, King and VITRO scores were assessed. Results: Esophageal varices were found in 120 patients (77.9%) and VNT in 92 patients (59.7%). Apart from AAR, all scores demonstrated statistically significant correlations with the presence and the size of EVs. Using area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), these scores were good predictors for the presence of EVs and VNT, where VITRO score had the highest AUC (0.920 and 0.900) and accuracy (97.1% and 87%), sensitivity (75, 82.6%), specificity (100, 93.5%), PPV (100, 95%) and NPV (53.2, 78.4%) with cutoffs >1.3 and >1.8 respectively. Conclusion: Noninvasive fibrosis scores can predict the presence of EVs and VNT. VITRO score was the best predictor with higher accuracy for clinical applicability than studied scores.

Nuclear Matrix Protein-22 and Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Are Diagnostic Markers for Bladder Carcinoma in Egypt

Bladder carcinoma is the foremost oncologic problem among males in Egypt. Here, we evaluated the possible diagnostic value of the urinary Nuclear Matrix Protein-22 “NMP-22” and Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase “hTERT” among histological subtypes of bladder cancer. 120 males with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, 21 non malignant bladder conditions and 21 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Estimation of hTERT and NMP-22 was done by PCR-elISA and elISA, respectively, from voided urine and results were compared to those of urine cytology. Results showed that urinary hTERT and NMP-22 were significantly higher in all cancer patients compared to control group. NMP-22 was able to discriminate between transitional cell bladder carcinoma “TCC” patients and squamous cell bladder carcinoma “SqCC” ones. Both markers succeded to discriminate between some transitional cell bladder carcinoma grades. Additionally, hTERT discriminated between some Tumor stages in both TCC and SqCC. Our results demonstrated that urinary hTERT and NMP-22 could be efficient urinary markers for the differential diagnosis of bladder cancer.

Identification and Conservation State of Painted Wall Plasters at the Funerary House in Necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel, el-Minia-Upper Egypt

During this study, the principal aim carried out was to obtain more information about technique and conservation conditions of the Egyptian wall paintings during the Roman period in the funerary house in necropolis of Tuna el-Gabal, el-Minia-Upper Egypt. It’s going back to 2nd century AD and involves different sites of Ptolemaic and Roman chapels;some are in the immaculate established style while others are a blend of Pharaonic-Greek style and both are secured with mural painting. Deterioration problems observed on the wall paintings of the funerary house are, loss of plaster layers, disintegration of plaster layers, loss of paint layers (blistering and peeling), discoloration and severely damaged owing to a lot of deterioration factors as weakness of mud brick support, deterioration of surface treatments and to the widespread presence of different salts. The materials used in the painting, preparation layers and the state of conservation of the mural painting at funerary house were investigated by integrated physio-chemical measurements, particularly micro-Raman spectroscopy (µRaman), light optical microscopy (LOM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis system (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). In addition, the morphology of multilayer plaster from wall painting was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). A wide color palette utilized as a part of the necropolis has been identified with mineral pigments and pigment mixtures. It is found that, the paints were based on an organic binder and traditional pigments (azurite, hematite, ochre, vegetable black) were used as colorants on plaster. The examination demonstrated that the preparatory layer is verging on made of pure lime while the plaster layer based mainly of lime and gypsum with variable amounts of quartz. An Ex-Press implant versus trabeculectomy in a fibrotic bleb with late failure after previous trabeculectomy

AIM: To compare the outcome of an Ex-Press implant and subscleral trabeculectomy(SST) in the management of glaucoma after previous trabeculectomy on a fibrotic ***: This randomized prospective study included 28 eyes from 28 patients(age range: 42-55 y) with primary open angle glaucoma(POAG) presented with elevated intraocular pressure(IOP) with fibrotic bleb despite previous SST for more than 4 mo. The eyes enrolled in the study were divided into two groups: group I(subjected to Ex-Press implant surgery) and group II [subjected to SST with mitomycin C(MMC)]. The follow-up continued one year after surgery to evaluate IOP, visual acuity(VA), visual field(VF), and postoperative complications. RESULTS: A significant decrease in IOP was found in both groups with a higher reduction in Ex-Press implant surgery with the mean IOP of 14.50 mm Hg(P=0.001), while the SST group recorded the mean IOP of 16.50 mm Hg(P=0.001) after one year. However, the difference between the two groups in terms of the decrease in IOP was insignificant. Fewer postoperative complications were recorded in the Ex-Press implant surgery and more cases requiring further anti-glaucomatous medications were seen in the SST group. Both groups showed stability in terms of VA and ***: Ex-Press implant surgery and SST with MMC are two surgical alternatives for controlling IOP in late failure that occurs more than 4 mo after previous SST with a fibrotic bleb. However, Ex-Press shunt is a safer surgery with fewer complications.

Natural radioactivity levels and radiation hazards for gypsum materials used in Egypt

Radionuclides naturally occurring in building materials may significantly contribute to the annual doses to the public. For instance, familiar building materials such as the concrete and gypsum board have been reported to produce a dose of about 0.04 mSv per year for a typical person (NCRP 1987c). External as well as internal exposures are two pathways of radiation dose imparted to human beings from the building materials. As information on the radioactivity of such materials is lacking, the study of gypsum materials used in Egypt was carried out in order to estimate the annual dose to the Egyptian population due to natural radionuclides in building materials. During the study, 18 samples of commonly used gypsum raw materials were collected and measured. The activity concentrations were determined by gamma ray spectrometry. Their mean values were in the ranges of 499.29 ± 11.53 Bq·kg-1 for 40K, 91.97 ± 2.61 Bq·kg-1 for 226Ra, 37.62 ± 1.67 Bq·kg-1 for 238U and 42.27 ± 2.22 Bq·kg-1 for 232Th. The activity indexed Iγ for 18, different gypsum samples varied from 0.31 ± 0.03 to 2.3 ± 0.19 and the radium equivalent activity (Raeq), from 38.81 ± 1.68 to 324.7 ± 9.42. These values are lower than the limit of 370 Bq·kg-1 adopted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The average indoor annual effective gamma dose rate (DE) in (mSv/y) for the people, caused by the building materials of dwellings, was assessed for most commonly gypsum materials. It was estimated to be in the range from 0.10 ± 0.003 mSv/y to 0.74 ± 0.08 mSv/y. The internal and external hazard indices (Hin, Hex) and the absorbed dose rate in air D in each sample were evaluated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in dwelling made of the studied materials. The absorbed dose rate of indoor air in samples G1, G2, G11, G17 and G18 is less than the international recommended value which is 55 nGyh-1. The Usefulness of Diffusion Weighted and Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Characterization of Inconclusive Ovarian Mass

Introduction: Ovarian cancer is the commonest reason for death in females due to gynecologic malignancy around the world. In contrast to other gynecologic tumours, the definitive diagnosis is accomplished days after of the index surgery by the histopathology. Preoperative assessment based on conventional MRI is not accurate. Information is expanding increasing about the ability of new MRI modalities to assess ovarian mass. Aim of the study: To assess the ability of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE–MRI), and Diffusion-weighted image (DWI) to describe uncertain ovarian masses. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study. Patients were referred from radio-diagnosis department and gynecology department of Qena faculty of medicine hospitals, South Valley University. Patients had uncertain adnexal masses at ultrasound. Magnetic resonance examination was doneutilizing 1.5 Tesla machine. The protocol included T1WI, T2WI, T1WI following contrast, and DWI. Results: We included 44 patients with different forms of complex cystic and solid ovarian masses. The final pathology of the ovarian masses was 18 benign, 4 borderline, and 22 malignant. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy for DWI were 100%, 94.4%, 96.3%, 100%, and 97.7% respectively. The performance of DWI was higher than the conventional MRI and DCE-MRI. Conclusion: DCE-MRI and DWI have accepted ability to recognize malignant ovarian mass.

electro Analytical Determination of Di Hydroxybenzene Isomers Using Glassy Carbon electrode

In this study, the electrochemical oxidation of CT （catechol）, HQ （hydroquinone） and RS （resorcinol） was investigated using cyclic and linear sweep voltammetries at GCE （glassy carbon electrode）. The GCE showed an excellent electro activity and reversibility towards the oxidation of these isomers at different conditions. HQ and CT showed one defined oxidation peak and one defined reduction peak while RS showed one defined oxidation peak. These isomers were determined also in their binary and tertiary mixtures. The calibration curves for CT, HQ and RS were obtained in the ranges of 5 × 10-6 to 1 × 10-3 ***-3, 5 × 10-6 to 5 × ***-3 and 1 × 10-5 to 1× 10-3 ***-3, respectively. The detection limits were 9 ×10-7, 3 × 10-7, 6 × 10-6 ***3 for CT, HQ and RS, respectively. At the optimal experimental conditions, these isomers were determined in different water samples. Also, the removal of catechol from aqueous solution by adsorption on activated charcoal and alumina was studied. After 24 h, 88.7% and 65.9% of catechol was removed using charcoal and alumina, respectively.

Predictive value of serum lactate dehydrogenase in diagnosis of septic shock in critical pediatric patients:A cross-sectional study

Objectives:To determine the predictive value of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)in the diagnosis of septic shock and its association with other prognostic scores in critical pediatric ***:A cross-sectional study was performed at Children’s Hospital of Cairo University between June 2019 and December 2019.A total of 200 pediatric patients were divided into the septic shock group[100 critically ill patients with septic shock from the pediatric intensive care unit(PICU)]and the control group(100 patients with only sepsis).LDH was determined in the first 24 hours of *** sensitivity and specificity of LDH in diagnosis of septic shock were assessed;the levels of related indicators of patients with different etiologies were compared;correlations between LDH,Paediatric Index of MortalityⅡ,and Pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(pSOFA)were ***:Median LDH was 512μL(406.50-663.00)in the septic shock group and was significantly higher than that[190μL(160.00-264.50)]in the control group(Pelation was found between pSOFA and LDH(r=0.503,P<0.001).Conclusions:LDH could be a potential inflammatory marker in the diagnosis of septic shock and is valuable for PICU admission decisions.

Removing Iron Ions Contaminants from Groundwater Using Modified Nano-Hydroxyapatite by Nano Manganese Oxide

In this article, we study modified nano-hydroxyapatite (HAp) by nano manganese oxide (Mn3O4) as adsorbent material to remove iron ions from groundwater. Different parameters were studied to option optimum conditions of removing such as contact time, pH, initial concentration, a dosage of adsorbent, agitation speed and temperature. Kinetics studies included first order (R2 = 0.915), pseudo-first order (R2 = 0.936), second order (R2 = 0.948), pseudo-second order (R2 = 0.995), elovich equation model (R2 = 0.977), intraparticle diffusion (R2 = 0.946), Natarajan and Khalaf (R2 = 0.915) were carried out, the obtained results revealed that the pseudo-second order is the best to describe the adsorption process because the correlation coefficient is approaching one (R2 = 0.995). Adsorption isotherm was calculated by using Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin constants, adsorption capacity from Langmuir model was 0.606 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH = ?51 KJ/mol, and ΔS = ?142 (KJ/mol)) for the adsorption process were also calculated and discussed.
