Exploitation of the antibacterial,antibiofilm and antioxidant activities of Salvadora Persica(Miswak)extract

The Salvadora persica(***)*** stick,usually known as miswak,is still being em-ployed as an oral hygiene agent for plaque and gingivitis *** study aims to assess the antibacterial,antibiofilm,antioxidant,and phytochemical profile of *** *** ***-sica was purchased from a local market,grinded and extracted with petroleum *** disk dif-fusion,microdilution,and micro-plate assays were performed to evaluate the antibacterial and an-tibiofilm activities of the prepared extract at different concentrations against𝛽-lactam resistance Streptococcus *** radical scavenging 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)and stable radical cationic chromophore,2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate)(ABTS)methods were used to determine their antioxidant *** and spectrometric analyses were performed using gas chromatography-mass(GC-MS)*** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of *** extract against𝛽-lactam resistance Streptococcus species ranged from 6.25 to 12.5 mg/*** maximum suppression of biofilm formation by *** extract was observed at MIC with a percentage of 68.66%,against Streptococcus *** *** ex-tract exhibited antioxidant activity with IC 50 of 20μg/mL and 35μg/mL from DPPH and ABTS,*** phytochemical characterization showed the presence of 22 compounds with ma-jor compounds;benzyl isothiocyanate(36.21%)and n-hexadecanoic acid(27.62%).The *** extract exhibited antibacterial activity against𝛽-lactam resistant Streptococcus species,showing a promising natural alternative that could be a treatment option.

Redox-active organic electrode materials are highly desirable in realizing next-generation all-in-one bendable electronic ***,a novel flexible supercapacitors(SCs)electrode is fabricated from poly(anthraquinonyl sulfide)(PAQS)and single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)suspension by a simple vacuum filtration and named as *** PAQS-SWCNTs electrode offered an initial capacitance of 223 F·g^-1 and outstanding capacitance retention up to 78.4%after 3×10^4 charge-discharge cycles at 0.5 A·g^-1 current *** a high potential range(0-3 V)and aprotic electrolyte,the PAQS-SWCNTs electrodes in coin cell exhibited an outstanding energy density of 69 Wh·kg^-1 at a power density of 90.6 W·kg^-1,whereas in the fabricated flexible SCs it retained 63.2 Wh·kg^-*** PAQS-SWCNTs electrodes also showed extraordinary performance at a higher current density(20 A·g^-1)and maintained a specific capacitance of 55 and 47 F·g^-1 for coin and flexible SCs,***,the flexible SC is further verified to be able to illuminate up multiple *** futuristic findings showed that the SCs assembled with flexible PAQS-SWCNTs electrodes have potential application in energy-storage devices and make them highly appealing for future redox supercapacitors.

Carcinomatous meningitis due to gastric adenocarcinoma:A rare presentation of relapse

While solid tumors are less commonly associated with meningeal involvement; lung, breast and melanoma are the ones most often reported. A few case reports have included gastric carcinoma but these are rare and most often associated with systemic disease at the time of diagnosis. Here we report a unique presentation of gastric carcinoma relapse with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. An 81-year-old female was diagnosed with gastric cancer approximately one year before presentation. Following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, she had gastrectomy. Her periodic surveillance was stable. Thereafter she presented with a one week history of progressive fatigue lightheadedness, syncope. During hospitalization her mental status deteriorated. A repeat computed axial tomography scan of the head showed no changes to suggest an etiology. A lumbar puncture was performed and cerebral spinal fluid(CSF) cytopathology confirmed gastric signet cell adenocarcinoma. Encephalopathy was likely caused by increased intracranial pressure from communicating *** carcinomatosis is associated with short life expectancy. Therapeutic lumbar punctures and best supportive care or systemic therapy can be applied with guarded prognosis. Survival, however, may improve with cytologic negative conversion of the CSF if patient performance status allows treatment.

Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Schiff Base (E)-N-(4-(2-Hydroxybenzylideneamino) Phenylsulfonyl) Acetamide Metal Complexes

New series of Ag, Cd(II), Ce(III), Co(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) complexes with (E)-N-(4-(2- hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenylsulfonyl) {S.S} have been synthesized. These compounds have been characterized by different physico-chemical techniques like, melting point, elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility and mass spectral analysis. The metal ions concentrations have been determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Spectroscopic studies suggest coordination most of complexes in a regular octahedral arrangement in 2L:1M molar ratio by two N azomethine and two OH phenolic from Schiff base {S.S} in the form of [ML2(H2O)2], M metal, L ligand {S.S}. Complexes have been screened for their antibacterial {Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)}, {Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Sterptococcus pneumoniae)} and antifungal (Aspergillus fumigates and Candida albicans) showing promising antimicrobial biological activity.

The availability of favorable genetic diversity is a thriving vitality for the success of a breeding *** provides a firm basis of selecting superior breeding lines for the development of high yielding crop *** this context,present investigation aimed to generate information on genetic divergence and character association in a diversity panel of 123 local and exotic soybean *** of variance revealed significant response of the evaluated genotypes based on studied *** depicted the probability of selecting desirable soybean genotypes by focusing on character association studies and genetic diversity *** analysis revealed that seed yield per plant showed high positive correlation with 100-seed weight followed by pods per plant and plant ***,path coefficient analysis exposed that pods per plant had maximum direct contribution in seed yield per plant followed by 100-seed weight,days to flowering and SPAD *** named“G-10”showed maximum yield per plant followed by 24607,G-52,24593,Arisoy,24566,17426,A-3127,24570 and *** diversity analysis grouped the evaluated germplasm into 17 *** clusters showed zero intra-cluster variability;while inter-cluster divergence ranged from 9.00 to *** V showed maximum inter-cluster distance with cluster XII followed by that of between V and ***,cluster IV with superior genotypes(G-10,24607,24593 and 24566),VI(17426 and 24567),XIII(24570)and X(Arisoy and G-52)showed above mean values for most of the studied ***,the results of hybridization between the superior genotypes of these cluster pairs might be useful for soybean breeding with improving agronomic traits and adaptability.

Knowledge and performance among nurses before and after a training programme on patient falls

Background: Patient falls in hospitals are common and affect approximately 2% to 17% of patients during their hospital stay. Patient falls are a nursingsensitive quality indicator in the delivery of inpatient services. Objective: To assess the effect of educational training program on nurses’ knowledge and performance regarding prevention of fall at one of the health insurance organization hospitals in Alexandria. Setting: The study was conducted at 284 bed general hospital affiliated with the Health Insurance Organization in Alexandria. Design: A quasi-experimental design was followed. Participants: The study sample included all nurses of different ranks working at four departments namely, orthopedic, medical, surgical, ICU unit. Results: There was a significant difference regarding all factors under study before and after the educational programme except for two individual factors, old age (p = 0.84), overall poor health status (p = 0.38), and two health factors, uses aids (p = 0.50), treatment by heparin (p = 1.00), and two environmental factors, poor lighting (p = 0.34), loose cords or wires (p = 0.30) and bells (p = 0.30), and one miscellaneous factor, patient education (p = 0.85) and tidy environment(p = 0.85). All departments showed posttest performance improvement, the total performance median for departments regarding environmental factor (p = 0.04) and health education (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Education programmes should be regularly, updated in view of changing knowledge and work practices.

Traumatic optic neuropathy secondary to acupuncture treatment for glaucoma: A case report

Internal organ injuries have been recognized as a major complication of acupuncture. Reported ocular adverse events include traumatic cataract, oculomotor nerve injury, endophthalmitis and retinal puncture. We report a case of traumatic optic neuropathy and self-sealed globe perforation following acupuncture. A Chinese gentleman with primary open angle glaucoma presented with sudden loss of vision in the right eye after acupuncture therapy. The vision dropped to 2/60 from 6/6 premorbid. Relative afferent pupillary defect was present. Fundus examination showed hemorrhage from the optic disc into the vitreous. It is likely that the optic nerve injury occurred when the acupuncture needle was advanced deep into locations near the optic nerve. Main acupoints used in acupuncture treatment of glaucoma include Tongziliao GB-1, Jingming BL-1 and Chengqi ST-1. It is crucial to have a good understanding of ocular anatomy to avoid potentially blinding complications.

Objective:To investigate the antimicrobial activities of *** acetate and methanol extracts of the leaves of Lumnitzera littorea(L littorea) against six human pathogenic microbes. Methods:The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion and microdilution ***:The antimicrobial activities of the crude extracts were increased with increasing the *** is clear that n-hexane extract was the most effective extract. *** positive Bacillus cereus(***) appear to be the most sensitive strain while Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***) and the yeast strains(Candida albicans(C. albicans) and Cryptococcus neoformans(***)) appear to be resistance to the tested concentrations since no inhibition zone was *** inhibition of microbial growth at concentration as low as 0.04 mg/*** the potent antimicrobial activity of L littorea ***:The obtained results are considered sufficient for further study to isolate the compounds responsible for the activity and suggesting the possibility of finding potent antibacterial agents from L littorea extracts.

Aspirin and Blood Glucose and Insulin Resistance

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder in which blood sugar levels are abnormally high because either absolute or relative insulin deficiency. Treatment of diabetes involves diet, exercise, education and for most people, drugs. Oral antidiabetic drugs and/or insulin doses may be affected by co-administration of many drugs including aspirin. Dose adjustments may be necessary. The pain killer effect of aspirin is best known for its effects on the two cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX1 & COX2), but, recently, aspirin could specifically inhibit the protein I-kappa-β-kinase beta (IKK-beta). This kinase is used for its role in the cascade of signals that activate the nuclear factor kappa-b (NF-kappa-B) family of cellular genes which regulate inflammatory and immune responses. Now, it turns out that IKK-beta also works in another pathway to contribute to insulin resistance by interfering with insulin signaling. Objective: In view of the recent rodent data demonstrating a potentially important role of IKKβ in mediating insulin resistance and the ability of salicylates to inhibit IKKβ activity, we decided to examine the role of different doses of aspirin (low, moderate and high) in experimentally induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: DM in rats were induced by administration of nicotinamide (NAD), 15 min prior to the single dose of streptozotocin STZ i.p. Ninety male albino rats were used in this study. They were divided into 6 main groups. The first was served as control which receives no medications. The second group was diabetic induced rats as mentioned above. The third group was controlled by insulin after induction of D.M. Groups from the fourth to the six consist of 20 diabetic induced rats and further subdivided into rats taking either aspirin alone in different doses (low, moderate or high) or aspirin and insulin.
