Introduction: In serodiscordant couples, sharing serostatus is a crucial step in the HIV risk management process. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with serostatus sharing among HIV serodiscordant couples in the city of Parakou. Setting and methods: This study was carried out in the city of Parakou, capital of northern Benin. It was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study with non-probability sampling for convenience. Socio-demographic data, as well as data on antecedents, behaviours, social and marital life, were collected using a questionnaire gave to the participants. Clinical and therapeutic data were collected from patients’ medical records and follow-up charts. Data were analyzed and processed using R 4.3.1 software. The significance level was set at 5%, and logistic regression was used to identify potential predictors of shared serostatus among serodiscordant couples in the city of Parakou in 2022. Results: A total of 299 participants in long-term serodiscordant relationships were included in our study. The average age of the subjects was 37.55 ± 10.25 years. Women were the infected partner in 80.27% of cases. The most common level of education was secondary (33.45%). Most respondents (230 subjects, 76.92%) were married. The average duration of the couple’s relationship was 121.68 months ± 96.32. The most frequent screening circumstances were: Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) (50.84%) and hospital screening (26.09%). The infected partner shared his or her serostatus with his or her spouse in 47.83% of cases. Potential predictors of serostatus sharing within the couple were: marital status (p Conclusion: The sharing of serostatus within serodiscordant couples needs to be managed in a way that takes into account the social and marital characteristics of the couple.

Introduction: Viral hepatitis B is a public health problem worldwide. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological and diagnostic profile of chronic carriers of hepatitis B virus seen for gastroenterology consultations in Parakou, Republic of Benin. Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study with retrospective data collection. Patients seen for gastroenterology consultations from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2021 at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Borgou/Alibori (CHUD-B/A) and having been diagnosed as chronic carriers of hepatitis B virus were included. A minimum initial assessment was required to be included. The minimum sample size was calculated with Schwartz formula. The variable of interest was the detection of HBsAg twice and at least 6 months apart. The other variables studied were sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical data. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS 17 software. Results: A total of 2786 patients were seen for gastroenterology consultations, including 1126 (40.4%) HBsAg-positive patients. Among them, 417 patients met the inclusion criteria and were the subject of the present study. The average age of the patients was 34.8 ± 10.5 years. Two hundred and forty-seven patients (65.7%) were male, representing a sex ratio of 1.9. The discovery of positive HBsAg status was made during systematic screening in 231 patients (55.4%). Scarifications were noted in 373 patients (89.4%). Asthenia was reported in 184 patients (44.1%). Co-infections with human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C and D viruses were 0% (0 in 92), 2.8% (4 in 146) and 14.3% (2 in 146), respectively. During the initial assessment, 274 patients (65.7%) were sero-negative for chronic HBeAg infection, 21 (5%) had clinically significant fibrosis including 16 (3.8%) at the stage of cirrhosis and 7 patients (5.4%) had hepatocellular carcinoma. Exploring the Factors Associated with 12-Month Non-Return to Work among Motorcyclists Involved in Road Accidents

Introduction: Motorcyclists bear a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality from road accidents. In addition, the consequences of these accidents affect the ability of victims to return to work. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with non-return to work among surviving motorcyclists involved in road accidents 12 months after the event. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted using data from a cohort of motorcyclists involved in accidents and recruited in five hospitals in Benin from July 2019 to January 2020. The dependent variable was non-return to work 12 months after the accident (yes vs no). The independent variables were categorized into two groups: baseline and 12-month follow-up variables. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with non-return to work at 12 months among the participants. Results: Among the 362 participants, 55 (15.19%, 95% CI = 11.84 - 19.29) had not returned to work 12 months after the accident. Risk factors for non-return to work identified were: smoking (aOR = 4.41, 95% CI = 1.44 - 13.56, p = 0.010), hospitalization (aOR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.14 - 7.24, p Conclusion: The prevalence of non-return to work at 12 months was high among surviving motorcyclists involved in road accidents in Benin. Integrated support for patients based on identified risk factors should effectively improve their return to work.

Implementation of the Acclimatization Process for Ginger Plantlets (Zingiber officinale Roscoe)

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is an important culinary and medicinal spice but is rarely cultivated due to the unavailability of seeds. Given the difficulties in adapting to plantlets produced in natural environments, it is important to analyze the survival conditions of ginger plantlets. For this reason, we varied the incubation temperature and humidity as well as the substrate during the weaning phase. Then, we varied the nutrients contained in the watering solution during the hardening phase. The statistical analysis showed that physical factors and substrates significantly influenced (p < 0.0001) plantlet survival. Nutrient solutions significantly influenced the phylogenesis, rhizogenesis, and height growth of the plantlets. The suitable physical factors for good development of plantlets are a temperature of 26.54˚C and a humidity of 96.16%. The 1C2T2TC substrate (1 Compost + 2 Soil + 2 Coconut Peat) had a significant survival rate of approximately 92.5%. During hardening, the Plantzym solution promoted good growth in terms of plantlet height (0.6 cm) and good development of roots (30 roots) and leaves (03 leaves). This work will make it possible to develop a technical seed production sheet for better development of ginger cultivation in Benin.

Effects of Health Record Computerization in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Burundi’ Hospitals: Propensity Score Matching

Introduction: A great number of software are currently used to digitalize the patient records in order to optimize the quality of services offered to patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Electronic Health Records use in Burundi’s hospitals, taking into account the COVID-19 pandemic context. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study based on difference in difference method. Ten district hospitals were included in the study, five of them had the Electronic Health Records and five of which did not yet have the Electronic Health Records. The hospital’s control group were chosen using the propensity score matching method. The period before the project’s implementation was 2014 and the period after were 2019 and 2020. Results: After 5 years of the Electronic Health Record’s implementation, the results showed an increase in outpatient consultation (70%), deliveries (more than 100%), caesarean sections (56%) and major surgeries (43%) indicators. The overall quality score of hospitals’ care had a regressive effect of 37% and the income from performance-based funding had an increase by 31%. The indicators which were affected by the context of the COVID-19 pandemic were especially outpatient consultation, caesarian section, income from performance-based funding decreased by 3%, 5% and 20% respectively. Conclusion: The effects of Electronic Health Records use are effective. As the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the hospital’s indicators negatively, the resilient strategies alongside the potential shocks are recommended.

Factors Associated with Pregnancy Outcomes in Hypertensive Pregnant Women in a District Hospital in Benin

Introduction: Hypertension is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This study aims at exploring the outcomes of pregnancy and associated factors in hypertensive pregnant women in Comè district hospital from 2014 to 2016. Methods: This is a retrospective, analytical study carried out in June 2016, involving a total of 345 hypertensive patients. Socio-demographic and medical features, including pregnancy and foetal outcomes parameters, were recorded in the case files. Top-down stepwise logistic regression was performed at the 5% threshold. Results: The frequency of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy was estimated at 7.32% and unfavourable outcomes at 35.65%. The adverse maternal outcomes recorded were postpartum death and haemorrhage whereas adverse foetal issues were prematurity, low birth weight, low Apgar scores, stillbirth and death. Factors statistically associated with pregnancy outcome were paucigravida (OR = 2.01 ([1.05 - 3.88]), p = 0.035), history of stillbirth (OR = 4.75 ([1.01 - 22.1]), p = 0.048) and anticonvulsant therapy (OR = 0.32 ([0.19 - 0.54]), p Conclusion: Adequate monitoring via Antenatal Care (ANC) check-ups, timely recourse to care and an effective communication strategy should reduce hypertensive disorders incidence and adverse outcomes in pregnant women.

Introduction: The growing phenomenon of early pregnancies in Benin has adverse consequences on the lives of adolescent girls, impacting various social, health, economic, and educational aspects. This study aims to identify the factors associated with early pregnancies in the municipality of Bohicon in 2022. Materials and Methods: This is a case-control study conducted in Bohicon, involving 47 cases and 94 controls from 16 secondary and technical schools. Cases were selected exhaustively, while controls were randomly drawn from girls aged 10 to 19 in the same class who had never been pregnant. Matching was based on the type of institution and class. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using Epi info 7.***.1.0 and STATA 15 software, employing multiple conditional logistic regression (5% significance threshold) to identify factors related to early pregnancies. Results: The average age of adolescents was 17.63 years ± 0.09 for cases and 17.12 years ± 0.13 for controls. Associated factors included age over 16 years (p = 0.049), the marital status of the adolescent (single) (p = 0.001), and the monthly pocket money of the adolescent less than 10,000 FCFA (p = 0.031). Conclusion: Three factors related to early pregnancies were identified. To counteract this phenomenon and promote responsible sexuality among adolescents, it is essential to strengthen communication efforts aimed at modifying behaviors.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the 2019 School-Based Awareness Campaign on Road Driving in the Municipalities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi in Benin

Being the leading death cause among young people in the world, road accidents are avoidable through the adoption of simple attitudes and behaviors. Handicap International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has launched an awareness campaign in secondary schools in the municipalities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavito bring young Beninese users to adopt good attitudes and safe behavior while driving on the road. This study aims at assessing the effectiveness of this awareness campaign. It was an evaluative cross-sectional here-elsewhere type study, held in fourteen high schools in the cities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi, of which seven benefited from the campaign and seven did not. In each school, students were selected on the basis of two-stage random sampling. 656 students, 309 of whom were sensitized and 347 of whom were not, were included in this study. The campaign was quite effective. Students, teachers, and school officials’ perceptions of the campaign were positive. In addition, the sensitized students had a better level of knowledge (p = 0.001) and reported safer behaviors (p = 0.003) while driving on the road than those who were not aware. Although the effects are positive, they are still very small. Efforts must be continued and much remains to be done.

Socio-Medical and Demographic Factors Associated with Perinatal Mortality in a Southern Benin Health Zone Hospital in 2020: A Case-Control Study

Background: Perinatal mortality remains a major public health concern in developing countries such as Benin. To better steer response interventions, this study was carried out in southern Benin with the aim of identifying the demographic and socio-medical factors linked to perinatal mortality. Methods: The case-control study, held from January 1 to December 31, 2020, covered 154 targets, including 77 cases of neonates deceased within the perinatal period and 77 live-born control neonates selected on a one-for-one basis. Univariate analysis using the McNemar test and logistic regression were used to identify risk factors for perinatal mortality, at a 5% threshold of significance. Results: Sahoué/mina ethnicities, only associated socio-demographic characteristic, increased the risk of perinatal death by 2.47 times (p = 0.008). Mother’s age, education, occupation, marital status, and household size were not associated (p > 0.05). Risk of death was increased 2.5 times when the mother was referred (p = 0.007), 3.3 times when she came from a hard-to-reach locality (p Conclusion: Although attention must also be paid to referral and access to care, this study identifies antenatal consultation as the main target of any intervention to reduce perinatal mortality.

Neurological Disorders among the Outpatients Living with Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) Following at the Parakou Hospital in 2014

Objective: To study the frequency of neurological disorders associated to HIV infection. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out from 16th June to 16th September 2014 and included all 289 HIV-outpatients admitted to the Parakou University hospital. All data were recorded, physical examination was performed and the medical sheet of each patient was assessed. The diagnosis of neurological disorder (central and peripheral) was based on clinical features, past medical history, biological test and CT-scan data after multidisciplinary staff. Epi-data and Epi-Info 6.04C were used to perform analysis. Results: They were 73 (25.3%) male with a mean age of 38.0 years +/−?10.1 years. The mean duration of disease was 48.5 months +/−37.1 months. 150 (51.9%) of them were at Stage 3 of the disease. All patients (99.7%) were infected by HIV1, 188 (76.1%) had CD4 cells at the onset of the follow-up less than 350 cells/mm3 and 260 (90.0%) were on ART. Among the 289 patients, 110 had at least one neurological disorder, the frequency of neurological disorders was 38.1%. The main neurological disorders were peripheral neuropathy (34.3%), isolated headache (5.2%), stroke (0.7%), cerebral toxoplasmosis (0.7%) and one case of dementia (0.7%). The main associated factors were the age of patient and exposure on neurotoxic drug, especially ART. Conclusion: The neurological disorders were more frequent among HIV patients with a high frequency of peripheral neuropathy probably due to ART.
