The inhibitory effects on adult male reproductive functions of crude garlic （Allium sativum） feeding

Aim： To investigate the effects of crude garlic on adult male rat reproductive functions. Methods： Thirty male rats were divided into five groups： group 1 （untreated） and groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were fed for 30 days with 5%, 10%, 15% and 30% crude garlic, respectively. Testes and accessory organs were weighed and some markers were assessed. Light and electron microscopy observations were also performed. Results： A significant decrease was observed in the body weight of groups 4 （14%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （20%; P 〈 0.01）; of the prostate weight in group 5 （29.1%; P 〈 0.05） and of seminal vesicle weight in groups 3 （14.4%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （18.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （27.3%; P 〈 0.01）. In contrast, testis and epididymis weights were unchanged. In epididymis tissue, the alpha glucosidase activity and the spermatozoa density were unchanged. The treatment resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone serum levels in groups 3 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （90.9%; P 〈 0.01）, associated with a significant increase in LH serum levels （P 〈 0.01）. Testicular histology showed a dose-dependent increase in the percentage of empty seminiferous tubules. Moreover, testicular function was affected; a significant decrease in phosphatase acid activity （P 〈 0.01） and testosterone （P 〈 0.05） contents were observed. Conclusion： Crude garlic consumption during 1 month reduced testosterone secretion and altered spermatogenesis at 10%, 15% and 30% doses.

Analytical Approach for the Systematic Research of the Periodic Ferroresonant Solutions in the Power Networks

Ferroresonance is a complex and little known electrotechnical phenomenon. This lack of knowledge means that it is voluntarily considered responsible for a number of unexplained destructions or malfunctioning of equipment. The mathematical framework most suited to the general study of this phenomenon is the bifurcation theory, the main tool of which is the continuation method. Nevertheless, the use of a continuation process is not devoid of difficulties. In fact, to continue the solutions isolats which are closed curves, it is necessary to know a solution belonging to this isolated curve (isolat) to initialise the continuation method. The principal contribution of this article is to develop an analytical method allowing systematic calculation of this initial solution for various periodic ferroresonant modes (fundamental, harmonic and subharmonic) appearing on nonlinear electric system. The approach proposed uses a problem formulation in the frequency domain. This method enables to directly determine the solution in steady state without computing of the transient state. When we apply this method to the single-phase ferroresonant circuits (series and parallels configurations), we could easily calculate an initial solution for each ferroresonant mode that can be established. Knowing this first solution, we show how to use this analytical approach in a continuation technique to find the other solutions. The totality of the obtained solutions is represented in a plane where the abscissa is the amplitude of the supply voltage and the ordinate the amplitude of the system’s state variable (flux or voltage). The curve thus obtained is called “bifurcation diagram”. We will be able to then obtain a synthetic knowledge of the possible behaviors of the two circuits and particularly the limits of the dangerous zones of the various periodic ferroresonant modes that may appear. Wind Energy Conversion Systems Adapted to the Tunisian Sites

The choice of a wind turbine for a given site is a very significant operation. It is advised to make an in-depth study on the characteristics of the aerogenerator and the implantation site before any installation of a wind farm for choosing well the system best adapted to the energy needs. The objective of this study is to sensitize the users of the wind energy on the various problems involved in the aerogenerator installation on any site and to provide a decision-making aid to the judicious choice of the wind system best adapted. The idea is to estimate, for a selected implantation site, the energy production and the operating time of several wind systems. We can thus select the aerogenerator best adapted by making a compromise between a maximum recovery of energy and a high time of production. The influence height of the aerogenerator on energy profitability is also studied. We apply this step to the twenty six Tunisian synoptic sites by implantation scenarios of seven wind systems of various nominal speeds in function of the height.

First Report of Abnormal Spermathecae in Phlebotomus （Larroussius） Iongicuspis Nitzulescu, 1930 （Diptera： Psychodidae）, in Tunisia

Phlebotomine sandflies （Diptera： Psychodidae） constitute a large group of flies, many of which have been described as vectors of leishmaniasis, a disease caused by Leishmania （Kinetoplastida： Trypanosomatidae） parasites. In Tunisia, a total of 17 species belonging to both genera Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia were described. In this work we report on an abnormality found in spermathecae of a female specimen ofPhlebotomus （Larroussius） longicuspis Nitzulescu, 1930. Sandflies were collected in SidiSaad locality, in the govemorate of Kairouan, central Tunisia, where zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic, during the June to November 2011 period, using CDC light traps. Males were washed and directly identified and females were dissected and morphologically identified using the head and the last two abdominal segments containing spermathecae and ducts. 162 flies were morphologically described. Among 33 females identified as Phlebotomus （Larroussius） longicuspis, one specimen was found abnormal and presented with three spermathecae. An additional spermathecae located in a short bifurcation on the upper extremity of one duct was found. This anomaly is for the first time described in Tunisia. Morphological abnormalities are important to report in order to avoid erroneous sandfly identification or description of new species.

Design Analysis of DC-DC Converters Connected to a Photovoltaic Generator and Controlled by MPPT for Optimal Energy Transfer throughout a Clear Day

The DC-DC converters are widely used in photovoltaic generating systems as an interface between PV module and the load. These converters must be chosen to be able to match the maximum power point (MPP) of PV module when climatic conditions change with different resistive load values. So DC-DC converters must be used with MPPT controller in order to reduce losses in the global PV system. This article focuses on the effect of climatic conditions on design of two components (inductance, capacitance) for three topologies of DC-DC converters commonly used in PV systems. When climatic conditions change, the boundary of inductance and capacitance parameters of DC-DC converter will change. These two parameters must be properly sized to achieve optimal efficiency for each converter. The design optimization is based on two principles: 1) for a steady-state operation in a continuous conduction mode, the inductance value for all choppers must be greater than the maximum value of boundary inductance, and 2) in order to limit the output voltage ripple of DC-DC converter below a desired value, the filter capacitance must be larger than the maximum value of boundary capacitance.

Planar Scintigraphic Images Denoising

Scintigraphic images are generally affected by a Poisson type random noise which diminishes qualitatively and quantitatively the images. Restoration techniques aim to “find” an object from one (or several) degraded observation(s). The objective of the restoration is then to produce an image closer to the physical reality. So that the restoration is successful, it is very useful to know the nature of degradation. In this work, we present a planar scintigraphic acquisition chain modeling. This model takes into account the Poisson noise and its stationarity aspect. Then, we present a comparative study of the multi-resolution methods used to reduce the noise in scintigraphic images. Scintigraphy is a tool for exploring functionally several pathologies: the ventricular ejection fraction, the renal clearance and the thyroid activity. Given the fact that scintigraphic images are strongly affected by noise, the objective in this work is to enhance scintigraphic images for a reliable diagnosis and better orientation and understanding of the pathological phenomenon. This paper focuses on two main parts: the first deals with the degradation of model while the second takes into consideration the comparison of the multi-resolution methods for assessing the quality of scintigraphic images to reduce noise using wavelet, contourlet, curvelet, ridgelet and bandelet transformations.

Children Flat Foot and Lower Limb Rotational Profile: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study

Flat foot in children is a common deformation, which appears during the first years of life. It requires a rigorous evaluation to rule out congenital or neurological abnormality. It is characterized by a decrease of the plantar concavity indeed collapse of the foot, often associated with other morphostatic deformations. The aim of this study is to find a correlation between the essential flat foot in children and lower limb disorders torsional. It is a cross-sectional descriptive study, recruiting 110 children (220 feet) aged between 3 and 6 years old. Each child was given an assessment of the morphology of the foot (Contact Index II…) and lower limb rotational profile (intoeing and femoral antétorsion and tibal torsion). Among 110 children, 21 (19.1%) have bilateral flat feet and 7 (6.4%) have unilateral flat feet, associated with an average value of Contact Index II equal to 0.921;the minimum value is 0.880 and the maximum value is 1.17. All children with flat feet have excessive femoral antétorsion;45 (92%) are associated with a hip intoeing and 38 (80%) present an insufficient external tibial torsion. The analysis of multiple regression shows a significantly elevated correlation among the flat foot and excessive internal rotation of the hip (F = 70.36, r = 0.77, P < 0.001), excessive femoral antetorsion (F = 54.78, r = 0.73, P < 0.001) and insufficient external tibial torsion (F = 7.79, r = 0.37, P < 0.001).

The Effect of the Light Intensity and Light Distances of LED and QTH Curing Devices on the Hardness of Two Light-Cured Nano-Resin Composites

Background: Effective polymerization of the composite resin is essential to obtain long term clinical success and has a great importance obtaining improved mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of the light intensity of LED and QTH curing devices in relation to the light distances, on the hardness (KHN) of two light cure nano-resin composite. Material and Methods: The top and bottom surfaces of the two nanofill composite specimens were evaluated. Two LED and two QTH light curing devices were used at nine different distances. Light intensity was measured with two radiometers placed at these same distances from the curing tip. 360 pvc dies were prepared with circular cavity 3 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. The tested materials were placed in each cavity. The different light curing distances were standardized by adding pvc spacers dies at different height matching the different distances. Top and bottom surface microhardness were evaluated with a Micro Hardness Tester in knoop hardness numbers (Kg/mm2). Data were statistically analyzed using: Three-way ANOVA, Tukey and Pearsons test. Results: It was revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in microhardness between the composites (p < 0.001), between the nine distances (p < 0.001) and between the four light curing devices (p < 0.001). Increasing the distance of the light source from composite resin, the light intensity and the microhardness values at the top and bottom surface decrease. LED light curing devices produced a greater microhardness results at the bottom surface of the specimens. The Filtek Ultimate nanocomposite (3 m) showed highest microhardness values on the top and bottom surfaces, polymerized with all four curing devices and all nine distances compared to Empress Direct nano composite (Ivoclar vivadent). The purpose of this article is to analyze the significance of a special space, which has a particular meaning in Tahar ben Jelloun＇s work： the public square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakesh＇s Medina Quarter. For Tahar ben Jelloun, the well-known French Maghrebian writer, the process of writing begins with the emergence of creative evidence in speech. It is the matrix of his writing. Thus, an oral perspective is sketched out, a whole game of fleeting narratives told in the public square. This space is an ideal one that draws its elements from orality and contributes to the preservation of traditional knowledge and the implementation of common values participating in a collective memory. How does ben Jelloun seize the voices that already exist in the real Public Square in order to engage them in his narrative？ A closer examination of the text enables us to unpick the process of ben Jelloun＇s narrative strategies. In the public square, the picture that emerges is that two essential elements reveal the organization of the narrative： the cultural source and the literary source.

Effects of Physical Exercise and Music Therapy on Cognitive Aspects in Tunisian Patients with Mild Alzheimer’s Type Dementia

Aim: The objective of this research is to highlight the effectiveness of physical exercise and music therapy in older patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods: Patients with a mild level of AD were included in this study, divided into the therapy group (TG;N = 30, aged 68 ± 3.2 years) and the control group (CG;N=30, aged 65 ± 2.6 years). The therapy group was enrolled in an exercise-training program (walking, resistance and balance exercises) combined with musical therapy for 10 weeks (three sessions of 60 minutes per week). The Control group was instructed to follow their daily rhythm of life (e.g., rest, reading) under the same conditions. The intervention program was enrolled under the supervision of;one psychologist;a neurologist;two music therapists, and two physiotherapists, all belonging to the same hospital unit. After 10 weeks of participation in the combined program, cognitive parameters were improved in the therapy group measured with the Behavior Pathology in Alzheimer Disease (BEHAVE-AD), (p beneficial combined treatments for improving life quality in older patients. This approach may be useful to help patients with a mild level of Alzheimer’s disease improve their behavioral and psychological parameters.
