A series of molecules with oligophenylene backbone,thiolate anchoring group,pentafluoro-λ^(6)-sulfanyl(−SF_(5))tail group was synthesized and used as precursors to form self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)on Au(111)*** resulting SAMs feature dense molecular packing,upright molecular orientation,chemically homogeneous SAM-ambient interface,comprised entirely of the−SF_(5)*** SAMs exhibit exceptional wetting and electrostatic properties,showing advancing water contact angles up to 103°and work function values up to 5.96 eV—probably the highest values reported for any aromatic monolayers on *** also feature a comparably low value of the tunnelling decay coefficient(0.38±0.07Å^(−1)),typical of oligophenylene backbone,which is not affected by the introduction of the−SF_(5)*** latter also hardly affects the current densities at a specific bias compared to analogous monolayers with other electronegative tail *** superior electrostatic and good charge transport properties of the designed,SF_(5)-terminated SAMs make them potentially useful for interface engineering in organic electronics and photovoltaics.

The possibility of having flying machines in complex natural environments presents many exciting possibilities, but also technical challenges. Insects often rely on visual cues for flight and decision making, and recent work suggests that the perception of wind force through tactile sensory inputs also provides important information for flight control. However, the extent to which these respective cues might potentially be bound together in the brain to enable accurate decisions remains untested. Here we discuss recent evidence that the brain of insects possesses mechanisms that may allow for the binding of complex multisensory information, and we propose an experiment that could dissect whether insects like bees may have such a capacity. We additionally discuss areas of the bee brain that might facilitate decision making in order to provide a road map forward for future work on understanding the mechanisms of flying in complex natural environments.

Monitoring and analyzing changes in the extent of cultivated land may inform strategic decisions on issues of environmental and food *** dry cropland area of 12000 km^2in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region(TGRR)of China is essential for feeding the local population of^20 million,but is highly prone to soil erosion,leading to the delivery of excessive amounts of sediment and associated pollutants to the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR),and causing serious eco-environmental *** this background,this paper used Landsat images and a digital elevation model to analyze the altitudinal distribution of,and dynamic changes in,the area of dry cropland during the period 1990 to *** results suggest that dry cropland was mainly distributed in the elevation range of 200-600 *** dry cropland area decreased from 12525.37 km^2to 11796.27 km^2during the 25-year study period,including a particularly significant decrease in the rate of decrease from 6.93 km^2/yr to 43.99 km^2/yr after *** largest decline in the dry cropland area occurred in the elevation range of 600-900 *** transformations between dry cropland and forest revealed the impact of the TGR operation on the extent of dry cropland.A total of 528.79 km^2of dry cropland with slopes>25°were converted to forest after 2000,whereas a total of 642 km^2of forest was converted to dry cropland during the study period,and these conversions mainly occurred between the elevation of 200–900 *** spatiotemporal changes in the dry cropland area are likely to raise new issues concerning food security in the TGRR.

Parthenogenetic reproduction is taxonomically widespread and occurs through various cytological mechanisms, which have different impact on the genetic variation of the offspring. extatosoma tiaratum is a facultatively parthenogenetic Australian insect （Phasmatodea）, in which females oviposit continuously throughout their adult lifespan irre- spective of mating. Fertilized eggs produce sons and daughters through sexual reproduction and unfertilized eggs produce female offspring via parthenogenesis. Here, we developed novel microsatellite markers for e. tiaratum and characterized them by genotyping indi- viduals from a natural population. We then used the microsatellite markers to infer the cytological mechanism of parthenogenesis in this species. We found evidence suggesting parthenogenesis in e. tiaratum occurs through automixis with terminal fusion, resulting in substantial loss of microsatellite heterozygosity in the offspring. Loss of microsatel- lite heterozygosity may be associated with loss of heterozygosity in fitness related loci. The mechanism of parthenogenetic reproduction can therefore affect fitness outcomes and needs to be considered when comparing costs and benefits of sex versus parthenogenesis.

The circadian clock temporally coordinates plant growth and metabolism in close synchronization with the diurnal and seasonal environmental changes. Research over the last decade has identified a number of clock components and a variety of regulatory mechanisms responsible for the rhythmic oscillations in metabolic and physiological activities. At the core of the clock, transcriptional/translational feedback loops modulate the expression of a significant proportion of the genome. In this article, we briefly describe some of the very recent advances that have improved our understanding of clock organization and function in Arabidopsis thaliana. The new studies illustrate the role of clock protein complex for- mation on circadian gating of plant growth and identify alternative splicing as a new regulatory mechanism for clock function. examination of key clock properties such as temperature compensation has also opened new avenues for func- tional research within the plant clockwork. The emerging connections between the circadian clock and metabolism, hor- mone signaling and response to biotic and abiotic stress also add new layers of complexity to the clock network and underscore the significance of the circadian clock regulating the daily life of plants.
