AIM: To assess numbers and case fatality of p.tients with up.er gastrointestinal bleeding(UGIB),effects of dep.ivation and whether weekend p.esentation affected ***: Data was obtained from Information Services Division(ISD) Scotland and National Records of Scotland(NRS) death records for a ten year p.riod between 2000-2001 and 2009-2010. We obtained data from the ISD Scottish Morbidity Records(SMR01) database which holds data on inp.tient and daycase hosp.tal discharges from non-obstetric and nonp.ychiatric hosp.tals in Scotland. The mortality data was obtained from NRS and linked with the ISD SMR01 database to obtain 30-d case fatality. We used 23 ICD-10(International Classification of diseases) codes which identify UGIB to interrogate database. We analysed these data for trends in number of hosp.tal admissions with UGIB,30-d mortality over time and assessed effects of social dep.ivation. We comp.red weekend and weekday admissions for differences in 30-d mortality and length of hosp.tal stay. We determined comorbidities for each admission to establish if comorbidities contributed to p.tient outcome. RESULTS: A total of 60643 Scottish residents were admitted with UGIH during January,2000 and October,2009. There was no significant change in annual number of admissions over time,but there was a statistically significant reduction in 30-d case fatality from 10.3% to 8.8%(p.p.tients from most dep.ived category(p.p.tients from the least dep.ived category(p.p.tients admitted with UGIB at weekends had higher 30-d case fatality comp.red with those admitted on weekdays(p.p.tients admitted with UGIB at weekends after adjusting for comorbidities. In this study,the effects of deep.cryogenic treatment(DCT)on the mechanical and tribological p.op.rties of AISI D3 tool steel were investigated together with a systematic correlation between their hardness and wear *** was found that conventionally heat treated AISI D3 tool steel samp.es were significantly hardened via an additional DCT,which was attributed to the more retained austenite elimination,more homogenized carbide distribution and more reduction in carbide size in the *** a result,the hardened AISI D3 samp.es exhibited reductions in their friction and wear during rubbing against alumina and 100Cr6 steel balls under different normal loads due to the effectively hindered removal of surface *** results clearly showed that the DCT was an effective way to imp.ove the mechanical and tribological p.op.rties of the AISI D3 tool steel samp.es as the tribological p.rformance of the tool steel samp.es was significantly influenced by their hardness.

AIM： To assess quantitative endoscop.c ultrasound （EUS）- guided elastograp.y in the nodal staging of oesop.ago- gastric cancers.METHODS： This was a single tertiary centre study as- sessing 50 p.tients with established oesop.ago-gastric cancer undergoing EUS-guided fine needle asp.ration biop.y （FNAB） of lymp. nodes between July 2007 and July 2009. EUS-guided elastograp.y of lymp. nodes was p.rformed before EUS-FNAB. Standard EUS charac- teristics were also described. Cytological determination of whether a lymp. node was malignant or benign was used as the gold standard for this study. Comp.risons of elastograp.y and standard EUS characteristics were made between the cytologically benign and malignant nodes. The main outcome measure was the accuracy of elastograp.y in differentiating between benign and malignant lymp. nodes in oesop.ageal cancers.
