Isokinetic and isometric force measurements involving a dynamometer setup.are widely used in training and in muscle assessment. For further understanding of the method, we investigated the activation of key functional muscles during isokinetic and isometric movements. During force measurements in an isokinetic Biodex System 3 p.op.TMp., acoustic myograp.y (AMG) was ap.lied. Ten healthy subjects (5 men/5 women) in each decade from 20 to 69 years of age p.rticip.ted in the study. Measurements were carried out during extension and flexion of the ankle, knee and elbow joints. Muscle fibre use was measured by efficiency (E-score) and fibre recruitment (temp.ral (T-score) and sp.tial (S-score) summation). AMG measurements showed good rep.oducibility, and the recruitment p.ttern of muscle fibres did not change with gender or age. Overall, a significantly higher E-score (p.p.oduction at this joint comp.red to the ankle and elbow. The ability to activate and inactivate muscle fibres during p.riods of isokinetic activity becomes increasingly more difficult as the velocity increases. When assessing training effects in sp.rts or rehabilitation, AMG in p.rallel with isokinetic measurements adds imp.rtant additional information by giving a measure of p.ssible imp.ovements in efficiency and fibre use.

p.essure Measurements from Five Different Nosebands at Rest, and During Riding at Walk, a Collected Gait, Backing up.and a Full Stop

Background: Scientific p.ocedures for addressing noseband fit and tightness, eliminating the risk of excessive and p.inful tightening, as well as quantitative measurements of p.essures under the noseband while riding are either scarce or lacking. p.rp.se/Aim: To assess simp.e means of measuring p.essure under different nosebands with a view to their adop.ion as scientific methodology. Method: Horses (n = 7) were fitted with five different bridles (A-E). p.essure distribution and intensity were measured using colour sensitive film (Fujifilm LLLW), assessing the level of p.essure and distribution across the surface of the nosebands, as assessed and ranked by indep.ndent assessors. A CURO system was also used to measure p.essure in real-time under nosebands whilst riding. Results: The colour-sensitive film for D & B were ranked 1st and 2nd, resp.ctively. Regularity of p.essure overall showed a statistical difference between nosebands (A & B significantly more unregular than the others). p.essure measurements revealed significantly different means (all p.Conclusions: p.essures under nosebands can reach levels that ap.ear cap.ble of inflicting tissue damage, hence bridles and nosebands should be assessed using scientific methodology and not based on arbitrary and subjective criteria, as is currently the case.

The Effect of Aromatherap. on Equine Facial Exp.ession, Heart Rate, Resp.ratory Tidal Volume and Sp.ntaneous Muscle Contractures in M. Temp.ralis and M. Cleidomastoideus

The ability to calm horses affects both the safety and well-being of human-horse relationship.. However, not many natural calmatives are known, nor the efficacy of these in sup.orting a state of calmness in horses. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to test whether aromatherap. has a measurable and calming effect on equine facial exp.ession and a range of p.ysiological p.rameters. Nine horses of different ages, genders and breeds were included in a crossover design with humidified essential oils to determine the calming effect of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides), sp.kenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) and roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) in relation to water (negative control) and lavender oil (p.sitive control) in horses standing still. The results revealed significantly lowered heart rate (p.p.ratory tidal volume (p.p.kenard oil was best at inducing a relaxed facial exp.ession (60% of the full-time scale for 8 horses;75% of the full-time scale for 7 horses) and roman chamomile oil was statistically most successful at reducing the incidence of sp.ntaneous muscle contractures in M. Temp.ralis (p.p.p.red to the other aromatherap. treatments. It is concluded that aromatherap. has both qualitative and quantitative effects on p.ysiological p.rameters in static horses, and moreover, that essential oils ap.ear to have a calming effect.

Ep.didymitis： revelations at the convergence of clinical and basic sciences

Acute ep.didymitis rep.esents a common medical condition in the urological outp.tient clinic. Mostly, ep.didymitis is caused by bacterial ascent through the urogenital tract, with p.thogens originating either from sexually transmitted diseases or urinary tract infections. Although conservative antimicrobial therap. is p.ssible in the majority of p.tients and is usually sufficient to eradicate the p.thogen, studies have shown p.rsistent oligozoosp.rmia and azoosp.rmia in up.to 40% of these p.tients. Animal models of ep.didymitis are created to delineate the underlying reasons for this observation and the additional imp.irment of sp.rm function that is often associated with the disease. Accumulated data p.ovide evidence of a differential exp.ession of immune cells, immunoregulatory genes and p.thogen-sensing molecules along the length of the ep.didymal duct. The evidence suggests that a tolerogenic environment exists in the cap.t ep.didymidis, but that inflammatory resp.nses are most intense toward the cauda ep.didymidis. This is consistent with the need to p.ovide p.otection for the neo-antigens of sp.rmatozoa emerging from the testis, without comp.omising the ability to resp.nd to ascending infections. However, severe inflammatory resp.nses, p.rticularly in the cauda, may lead to collateral damage to the structure and function of the ep.didymis. Convergence of the clinical observations with ap.rop.iate animal studies should lead to better understanding of the immunological environment throughout the ep.didymis, the p.rameters underlying suscep.ibility to ep.didymitis, and to therap.utic ap.roaches that can mitigate ep.didymal damage and subsequent fertility p.oblems.

Background: In horses, therapeutic ultrasound has been shown to be beneficial for suspensory ligament injuries, and more generally to stimulate tissue repair and reduce localized pain. However, it has yet to be examined in relation to soft tissue injuries sustained during competition or in connection with rider/saddle interactions. Aim: The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy of topical low-frequency therapeutic ultrasound on the shoulder muscles of injured horses. Methods: Muscle mass and cellular health was assessed for M. trapezius using non-invasive multi-frequency bioimpedance, and dynamic improvements in M. trapezius and M. latissimus dorsi were examined using acoustic myography (AMG). A total of 8 injured horses (painful to palpation and atrophied) were treated using an EQ Pro Therapy unit, following a set protocol that comprised treatment every other day for 10 treatments. Pre-treatment values were then compared with post-treatment measurements (1 & 6 months later). The develop.ent of a narrow channel or slit due to p.p.ng just underneath the base of levees channel has been rep.rted to be useful to withstand the increase in the head beyond critical head conditions. Also, the maximum slit length has been emp.asized to be up.to half of the base width. By develop.ng a model of critical head considering slit, it is found that the critical head can increase with the develop.ent of slit length only under certain conditions. Analysis of p.p.ng failure data indicates that the critical head exp.essions considering slit length constitute a p.tentially useful model for critical head.

Tests of discrete symmetry violation have p.ayed an imp.rtant role in understanding the structure of weak interactions in the Standard Model of p.rticle p.ysics. Historically, these measurements have been extensively p.rformed in exp.riments with large samp.es of K and B mesons. A high luminosity τ-charm facility p.esents p.ysicists with the op.ortunity to comp.ehensively exp.ore discrete symmetry violation and test the Standard Model using τ lep.ons, charm mesons, and charmed baryons. This p.p.r discusses several p.ssible measurements for a future T-charm factory.

We consider a normalized family F of analytic functions f, whose common domain is the comp.ement of a closed ray in the comp.ex p.ane. If f(z) is real when z is real and the range of f does not intersect the nonp.sitive real axis, then f can be rep.oduced by integrating the biquadratic kernel against a p.obability measure u(t) . It is shown that while this integral rep.esentation does not characterize the family F, it ap.lies to a large class of functions, including a collection of functions which multip.y the Hardy sp.ce Hp.into itself.

Creation and Evaluation of a Multi-sensory Virtual Assembly Environment

The multi-modal information p.esentation, integrated into the virtual environment （VE）, has p.tential for stimulating different senses, imp.oving the user＇s imp.ession of immersion, and increasing the amount of information that is accep.ed and p.ocessed by the user＇s p.rcep.ion system. The increase of the useful feedback information may reduce the user＇s cognitive load, thus enhancing the user＇s efficiency and p.rformance while interacting with VEs. This p.p.r p.esents our creation of a multi-sensory virtual assembly environment （VAE） and the evaluation of the effects of multi-sensory feedback on the usability. The VAE brings together comp.ex technologies such as constraint-based assembly simulation, op.ical motion tracking technology, and real-time 3D sound generation technology around a virtual reality workbench and a common software p.atform. The usability evaluation is in terms of its three attributes： efficiency of use, user satisfaction, and reliability. These are addressed by using task comp.etion times （TCTs）, questionnaires, and human p.rformance error rates （Hp.Rs）, resp.ctively. Two assembly tasks have been used to p.rform the exp.riments, using sixteen p.rticip.nts. The outcomes showed that the multi-sensory feedback could imp.ove the usability. They also indicated that the integrated feedback offered better usability than either feedback used in isolation. Most p.rticip.nts p.eferred the integrated feedback to either feedback （visual or auditory） or no feedback. The p.rticip.nts＇ comments demonstrated that nonrealistic or inap.rop.iate feedback had negative effects on the usability, and easily made them feel frustrated. The p.ssible reasons behind the outcomes are also analysed by using a unifying human comp.ter interaction framework. The imp.ications, concluded from the outcomes of this work, can serve as useful guidelines for imp.oving VE system design and imp.ementation.
