Dispersion in time-oscillatory electro-osmotic flows in a slit micro-channel under the effect of kinetic sorptive exchange at walls is theoretically investigated using the homogenization method. The two walls of the channel are considered to be made up of different materials, and therefore have different zeta potentials and sorption coefficients. A general expression for the Taylor dispersion coefficient under different zeta potentials as well as various sorption conditions at the walls is derived analytically. The dispersion coefficient is found to be dependent on the oscillation frequency, the Debye parameter, the species partition coefficient, the reaction kinetics and the ratio of the wall potentials. The results demonstrate that the presence of wall sorption tends to enhance the dispersion when the oscillation frequency is low, but the effect is negligible in high-frequency oscillatory flows. Moreover, it is found that the dispersion coefficient could be significantly changed by adjusting the relative wall potentials for low-frequency flows.

Industrial water treatment and industrial marine outfalls both function together to reduce the pollutant concentrations in the effluent and mitigate the potential impact on the environment. The former uses environ- mental treatment technology with energy and material cost considerations, while the latter utilizes the natural assimilation potential of the coastal water environment achievable at the outfall location. Because of their synergistic nature, marine outfalls are now commonly used for the disposal of partially treated domestic and industrial effluents in many coastal cities around the world, with many successful examples of low and acceptable risks to the environment. The objective of this paper is to review their balance from both environmental and economic considerations. We also discuss the end-of-the-pipe and mixing zone approaches for industrial effluents, and give some recommendations particularly for developing coun- tries. Finally, we emphasize that a compulsory and vigorous monitoring program is essential regardless of how the balance is achieved.

High-order discretizations of partial differential equations(PDEs)necessitate high-order time integration schemes capable of handling both stiff and nonstiff operators in an efficient ***-explicit(IMEX)integration based on general linear methods(GLMs)offers an attractive solution due to their high stage and method order,as well as excellent stability *** IMEX characteristic allows stiff terms to be treated implicitly and nonstiff terms to be efficiently integrated *** work develops two systematic approaches for the development of IMEX GLMs of arbitrary order with stages that can be solved in *** first approach is based on diagonally implicit multi-stage integration methods(DIMSIMs)of types 3 and *** second is a parallel generalization of IMEX Euler and has the interesting feature that the linear stability is independent of the order of *** experiments confirm the theoretical rates of convergence and reveal that the new schemes are more efficient than serial IMEX GLMs and IMEX Runge-Kutta methods.

AIM： To assess quantitative endoscopic ultrasound （EUS）- guided elastography in the nodal staging of oesophago- gastric cancers.METHODS： This was a single tertiary centre study as- sessing 50 patients with established oesophago-gastric cancer undergoing EUS-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy （FNAB） of lymph nodes between July 2007 and July 2009. EUS-guided elastography of lymph nodes was performed before EUS-FNAB. Standard EUS charac- teristics were also described. Cytological determination of whether a lymph node was malignant or benign was used as the gold standard for this study. Comparisons of elastography and standard EUS characteristics were made between the cytologically benign and malignant nodes. The main outcome measure was the accuracy of elastography in differentiating between benign and malignant lymph nodes in oesophageal cancers.

In order to overcome negative consequences of a disaster, buildings and infrastructures need to be resilient. After a disaster occurs, they must get back to their normal operations as quickly as possible. Buildings and infrastructures should incorporate both pre-event(preparedness and mitigation) and post-event(response and recovery) resilience activities to minimize negative effects of a disaster. Quantitative approaches for measuring resilience for buildings and infrastructures need to be developed. A proposed methodology for quantification of resilience of a given building type based on different hurricane categories is presented. The formulation for the resilience quantification is based on a model embedding several distinct parameters(for example, structural loss ratios, conditional probabilities of exceeding for damage states, estimated and actual recovery times, wind speed probability). The proposed resilience formulation is applied to a residential building type selected from *** results of resilience for the selected residential building type against Category 1, 2, and 3 hurricanes are presented in a dashboard representation. Resilience performance indicators between different types of buildings, which are identical except for their roof types, have been evaluated in order to present applicability of the proposed methodology.

Iron is a critical micronutrient, and iron derived from heme contributes a large proportion of the total iron absorbed in a typical Western diet. Heme iron is absorbed by different mechanisms than non-heme iron, but despite considerable study over many years these mechanisms remain poorly understood. This review provides an overview of the importance of heme iron in the diet and discusses the two prevailing hypotheses of heme absorption; namely receptor mediated endocytosis of heme, and direct transport into the intestinal enterocyte by recently discovered heme transporters. A specific emphasis is placed on the questions surrounding the site of heme catabolism and the identity of the enzyme that performs this task. Additionally, we present the hypothesis that a non-heme iron transport protein may be required for heme iron absorption and discuss the experiences of our laboratory in examining this hypothesis.
