Labetalol versus Hydralazine in the Management of Severe Pre-Eclampsia at Tertiary Hospitals in a Low-Resource Setting: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Objective: Intravenous labetalol and hydralazine are both considered first-line medications for the management of acute-onset, severe hypertension in pregnant and postpartum women. The study compared the efficacy and safety profile of intravenous labetalol and hydralazine in the control hypertension in severe pre-eclampsia. Materials and Methods: One hundred patients who presented with severe pre-eclampsia were randomized into two study groups. The fifty patients in each arm of the study received either intravenous labetalol or intravenous hydralazine for the control of blood pressure. Results: The mean age of the labetalol subjects was 28.6 ± 5.47 years while that of their hydralazine counterparts was 29.12 ± 5.77 years. The majority of respondents in both groups were primigravidae (76% vs. 78%) (P = 0.813). The number of doses of drug needed to significantly lower the mean systolic blood pressure was slightly lower in the labetalol group (2 doses) compared to the hydralazine group (5 doses) (t = 0.803Y, P = 0.977). The incidence of headaches which were the commonest complaints was comparable in both groups 8% and 10% of respondents respectively (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Although both intravenous labetalol and hydralazine are useful in patients with severe pre-eclampsia, the response to labetalol was better with comparable side effects.

A synergistic effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles and polyethylene butene improving the rheology of waxy crude oil

This research examined the use of 75 nm zinc oxide nanoparticles(nano ZnO)and polyethylene butene(PEB)to decrease the viscosity of Nigerian waxy crude *** rheology of the crude oil was assessed by measuring the viscosity and shear stress of samples containing PEB at 500,1000,2000,3000,4000 or 5000 ppm and nano ZnO at 1,2,3 or 4 wt% between 10 and 35℃ at shear rates from 1.7 to 1020 s^(-1).Rheological modeling indicated that a power law pseudoplastic model was the best fit for the experimental data,giving a regression coefficient of *** addition of these inhibitors induced Newtonian fluid behavior in the crude samples such that the shear stress-shear rate relationship plots were linear at all *** optimum concentrations of the inhibitors in this study were 2000 ppm PEB(providing a 33% viscosity reduction)and 1 wt% nano ZnO(providing a 26% viscosity reduction).A combination of these additives at these concentrations provided a synergistic effect and gave a greater viscosity reduction of 41%.This work demonstrates that a blend of ZnO nanoparticles and PEB can improve the flowability of waxy crude.

Outcome of Teenage Pregnancy in a Low Resource Setting: A Comparative Study

Background: Teenage pregnancy constitutes a high-risk pregnancy due to possible physical, psychological, socio-economic and increased obstetric risks associated with it. These risks though equally present in the older pregnant women are probably less when compared with teenagers. Thus perinatal outcome of pregnancies in these groups of patients varies. Objective: To compare the socio-demographic characteristics, pattern of pregnancy complications and perinatal outcome of pregnancy among primigravid teenagers and older primigravid women. Method: A comparative study was carried out among 58 primigravid teenagers and equal numbers of adult primigravidae at Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Nigeria over five year period between January 2008 and December, 2012. Their socio-demographic characteristics, booking status, pregnancy complications, estimated gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, post-partum morbidities, neonatal birth weight and perinatal mortalities were obtained from their case notes. Results: Deliveries by teenagers accounted for 2.48% of all deliveries during the period under review. Teenage age was significantly associated with unmarried status (P < 0.001). Many physical systems can be successfully modelled using equations that admit the soliton *** addition,equations with soliton solutions have a significant mathematical *** this paper,we study and analyze a three-dimensional soliton equation,which has applications in plasma physics and other nonlinear sciences such as fluid mechanics,atomic physics,biophysics,nonlinear optics,classical and quantum fields ***,solitons and solitary waves have been observed in numerous situations and often dominate long-time *** perform symmetry reductions of the equation via the use of Lie group theory and then obtain analytic solutions through this technique for the very first *** integration of the resulting ordinary differential equation is done which gives new analytic travelling wave solutions that consist of rational function,elliptic functions,elementary trigonometric and hyperbolic functions solutions of the ***,various solitonic solutions are secured with the use of a polynomial complete discriminant system and elementary integral *** solutions comprise dark soliton,doubly-periodic soliton,trigonometric soliton,explosive/blowup and singular *** further exhibit the dynamics of the solutions with pictorial representations and discuss *** conclusion,we contemplate conserved quantities for the equation under study via the standard multiplier approach in conjunction with the homotopy integral *** state here categorically and emphatically that all results found in this study as far as we know have not been earlier obtained and so are new.

Dynamical Soliton Wave Structures of One-Dimensional Lie Subalgebras via Group-Invariant Solutions of a Higher-Dimensional Soliton Equation with Various Applications in Ocean Physics and Mechatronics Engineering

Having realized various significant roles that higher-dimensional nonlinear partial differ-ential equations(NLPDEs)play in engineering,we analytically investigate in this paper,a higher-dimensional soliton equation,with applications particularly in ocean physics and mechatronics(electrical electronics and mechanical)*** generators of Lie point symmetries of the equation are computed using Lie group analysis of differen-tial *** addition,we construct commutation as well as Lie adjoint representation tables for the nine-dimensional Lie algebra ***,a one-dimensional optimal system of Lie subalgebras is also presented for the soliton *** consequently enables us to generate abundant group-invariant solutions through the reduction of the understudy equation into various ordinary differential equations(ODEs).On solving the achieved nonlinear differential equations,we secure various solitonic *** conse-quence,these solutions containing diverse mathematical functions furnish copious shapes of dynamical wave structures,ranging from periodic,kink and kink-shaped nanopteron,soliton(bright and dark)to breather waves with extensive wave collisions *** physically interpreted the resulting soliton solutions by imploring graphical depictions in three dimensions,two dimensions and density ***,the gained group-invariant solutions involved several arbitrary functions,thus exhibiting rich physical *** also implore the power series technique to solve part of the complicated differential equa-tions and give valid comments on their ***,we outline some applications of our results in ocean physics and mechatronics engineering.

Langrangian formulation and solitary wave solutions of a generalized Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation with dual power-law nonlinearity in physical sciences and engineering

The Yoruba version of LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire: Evaluation of auditory development in children with normal hearing

The goal of this study was to translate the LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire into Yoruba language for use with Yoruba-speaking parents and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Yoruba version of questionnaire. Translation of the LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire into Yoruba language was done using a back-translation method. The study participants included 423 parents of normal hearing children aged6 e24 months. Psychometric analyses(scale analysis and item analysis) of the translated questionnaire was done. The scale characteristics in the dataset are: Internal consistency: Cronbach's alpha?0.907;reliability; Split-half?0.701; predictive accuracy; Guttman's lambda?0.583; correlation between total score and children's age?0.783. The regression analysis showed that 75.3% of the variance in the total scores can be explained by age. The Yoruba version of the LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire is a dependable and valid tool as evidenced by the results of psychometric analyses. The tool is useful for assessing auditory development in children between 6 and 24 months of age.
