Assessment of child Labour Practices among Market Women and Food Sellers in Ife central Local Government Area of Osun State,Nigeria

The study examined the forms of child labour practices common among market women and food sellers in Ife central local government area of Osun *** also determined the awareness level of market women and food sellers on the existing child labour law in Nigeria and finally examined factors contributing to child labour practices among market women and food *** study employed the descriptive research of the survey *** study population consisted of market women and food sellers in Ife central local government in Osun *** sample consisted of 170 market women and 80 food sellers in conveniently selected five markets in the study *** researchers developed three research instruments for this study,namely:Knowledge of child Labour Questionnaire(KcLQ),Forms of child Labour Practices Questionnaire(FcLPQ),and Factors contributing to child Labour Questionnaire(FccLQ).The three instruments were validated by the investigators,using cronbach alpha which yielded 0.79,0.77,and 0.78 values for KcLQ,FcLPQ,and FccLQ *** collected were analyzed by using simple percentage and Relative Importance *** results among others showed that domesticlabour ranked the first significantly influential forms of child labour practiced among market women and food sellers in Ife central local government,Osun State with RII analysis of 0.810 and 0.850 *** study therefore concluded that majority of the respondents have low awareness level on the existing child labour law hence government should intensify the creation of awareness of the child labour law among market women and food sellers in Ife central local government,Osun State.

Quantitation of Pesticide Residue in Water and Food in Louisiana, USA

Pesticides can remain in the environment for decades and contaminate surface water that is used for irrigation of produce. This study examined pesticide residues in some surface waters and foods in Louisiana. Samples of 8 foods (tomato, corn, rice, blueberry, cucumber, cabbage, wheat and melon) and 35 surface waters were studied using a QuEchERS extraction method for food samples and liquid-liquid extraction method for the water samples. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze water and food samples. Nine pesticides were detected in the surface water samples and 5 in the food samples. Pesticides detected in foods were below FDA tolerance limit but 0.18 ppm cypermethrin found in tomato was within 90% of the FDA limit (0.2 ppm). Four water samples had atrazine levels that were above the FDA limit for potable water. This study suggests the need to intermittently monitor pesticide contamination in our food and water.

Following the discovery of the Bacillus calmette-Guerin(BcG)vaccine,its efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis was soon established,with several countries adopting universal BcG vaccination schemes for their ***,however,studies aimed to further establish the efficacy of the vaccine in different populations discovered that the vaccine has a larger effect in reducing mortality rate than could be explained by its effect on tuberculosis alone,which sparked suggestions that the BcG vaccine could have effects on other unrelated or non-mycobacterial pathogens causing diseases in *** effects were termed heterologous,non-specific or off-target effects and have been shown to be due to both innate and adaptive immune system *** carried out in a bid to further understand these effects led to many more discoveries about the applicability of the BcG vaccine for the prevention,diagnosis,and treatment of certain disease *** we approach the second century since the discovery of the vaccine,we believe it is timely to review these interesting applications of the BcG vaccine,such as in the prevention of diabetes,atherosclerosis,and leukemia;the diagnosis of Kawasaki disease;and the treatment of multiple sclerosis,non-muscle invading bladder cancer,and stage III ***,complications associated with the administration of the BcG vaccine to certain groups of patients,including those with severe combined immunodeficiency and HIV,have been well described in literature,and we conclude by describing the mechanisms behind these complications and discuss their implications on vaccination strategies,especially in low-resource settings.

Introduction: caesarean section is one of the commonest surgical procedures worldwide. Its upward trend and associated morbidity/mortality especially in low-resource setting makes regular appraisal of the practice necessary. Methodology: A retrospective study. Labour ward logbook and case records were looked into, and all information extracted. Results: caesarean section rate was 35.5%, with an upward trend. Perinatal death was still high. Main indication was previous caesarean section followed by obstructed labour while major maternal morbidity was wound sepsis. Identifiable factors to perinatal death were multiparity, emergency caesarean section and women that were referred to our health facility. conclusion: Risk appraisal and all efforts must be geared towards reducing caesarean section rate especially in our environment where subsequent deliveries might not be attended to by skilled health personnel.

Detection of Partial and Extended Blockages: A case Study of Edible Oil Pipeline System

This work focuses on the development and implementation of a simulation-based approach for the detection of partial and extended blockages within an edible oil pipeline system. Blockages, whether partial or extended, pose a significant operational and safety risks. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (cFD) simulations to model the flow behaviour of edible oil through pipeline under varying conditions. It leverages advanced computational fluid dynamics (cFD) simulations to analyze pressure, velocity, and temperature variations along the pipeline. By simulating scenarios with different blockage characteristics, there is establishment of distinctive patterns indicative of partial and extended obstructions. Through extensive analysis of simulation data, sensing element, and monitoring system, processing signal input and response output, the system can accurately pinpoint the location and severity of blockages, providing crucial insights for timely intervention. The detection system represents a significant advancement in pipeline monitoring technology, offering a proactive and accurate approach to identify blockages and mitigate potential risks and ensure the uninterrupted flow of edible oil, thereby enabling timely intervention and maintenance.

High Fat Diet Alteration of Gut Microbiota Impacts Learning, Memory and Anxiety Response in Mice: cannabidiol and Omega 3 Possible Remedies

chronic intake of High Fat Diet (HFD) has the potential of causing a number of metabolic disorders. It is also theorized to be involved in perturbation of gut microbiota. cannabididol (cBD) and omega 3 are known to possess a number of medicinal usefulness. Their combined use in experimental interventions is quite limited. A total of 15 mice were used for this research divided into three groups of five animals each. Group 1 was administered water and normal chow ad libidum. Group 2 had HFD and water ad libidum. Group 3 had HFD plus cBD (10 mg/kg) and omega 3 (200 mg/kg) all for a total of 12 weeks. They were tested on the elevated plus maze (EPM) and average entry time into the closed arm was recorded. They were also tested on the Y-maze and spontaneous alternations were measured. Thereafter animals were sacrificed and faecal content in the caecum was collected in sterile bottles and cultured for E. coli count. It was found that HFD group at p value E. coli count (2.4 × 106 ± 4.5) compared to group 1 (1.4 × 106 ± 5.6) and group 3 (1.42 × 106 ± 6.3). The findings revealed that HFD enhanced gut E. coli overgrowth which was reduced by cBD and Omega 3. The memory impairment and anxiety induction by HFD was also significantly ameliorated by cBD and omega 3. E. coli known to be implicated in dementia induction was suppressed by the interventions. Possible mechanisms proposed are actions of cBD and omega 3 on cB1, TRVP and 5HT receptors in reducing anxiety and their antioxidant/anti-inflammatory actions in mitigating the neuro-inflammatory effect of HFD and immune hyperstimulation of E. coli via the gutbrain-axis.

Yohimbine in the treatment of orgasmic dysfunction

Aim： To study the effect of yohimbine in the treatment of men with orgasmic dysfunction. Methods： A 20-mg dose of yohimbine was first given to 29 men with orgasmic dysfunction of different aetiology in the clinic. Patients were then allowed to increase the dose at home （titration） under more favourable circumstances. The outcome and side effects were subsequently assessed. Results： The patients were classified into three groups of orgasmic dysfunction： primary complete （13）, primary incomplete （8） and secondary （8）. Nocturnal emissions were present in 75%, 40% and 50% of patients in the above groups, respectively （overall average 62%）. The men presented because of fertility problems （52%） or because they wanted to experience the pleasure of orgasm （48%）. Of the 29 patients who completed the treatment, 16 managed to reach orgasm and were able to ejaculate either during masturbation or sexual intercourse. A further three achieved orgasm, but only with the additional stimulation of a vibrator. A history of preceding nocturnal emissions was present in 69% of the men in whom orgasm was induced but only 50% who failed treatment. Of the patients, two have subsequently fathered children （one set of twins） and another 3 men were also cured. Side effects were not sufficient to cause the men to cease treatment. conclusion： Yohimbine is a useful treatment option in orgasmic dysfunction.

Alleviation of Pesticide Residue in Surface Water

Reduction of environmental pollution incurred from pesticide use is very important. Zeolite is a natural mineral capable of removing certain chemical contaminants from water. This study was carried out to test the effect of zeolite treatment on pesticide residue alleviation in surface water. Ten surface water samples were treated with natural zeolite by filtering through. An EPA method was used to extract pesticide residue from the water samples and the surfactant used to modify the net charge on the zeolite was hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HDTMA-cl). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze water samples. Alleviation was achieved in all the 10 water samples that were filtered through zeolite. The highest removal of pesticides from water with zeolite included 100% of bifenthrin in sample cLc, atrazine in BPH, cDG and LBT;metolachlor in cLc, LBT, BcH, TRH2 and BPI;acetolachlor in BBH and BcH;azoxystrobin in BBH;desethylatrazine in BcH and BPI;metribuzin in BcH, TRH2 and BPI;and both clomazone and bromacil in sample BDc. A minimum reduction of 10.9% was found for metolachlor in sample BRH. Further reduction of pesticide residues up to 50% was recorded in the SMZ treatment as the concentrations of 4 out of 8 pesticide residues were reduced. This study confirms the potential of both the natural zeolite-clinoptilolite, and SMZ of alleviating pesticide residues in water.

Enhanced Growth and Yield Performance of cassava Peel compost and Mineral Fertilizer on corchorus olitorius L.

Application of inorganic fertilizers improves crop yields but costs and adverse health effects often discourage their applications. This study therefore aims at evaluating the combined effects of cassava peel compost with poultry manure and mineral fertilizer on growth and yields of corchorus olitorius. Pots （factorial laid out in a randomized complete block design） and field （split-plot with fertilizer being the main effect and the varieties the sub plot effect） experiments were carried out during rainy season at Ibadan, Nigeria. Treatments consisted of 0, 5, l0 and 20 t/ha composts prepared from cassava peel and poultry manure in ratio 3：1 and mineral fertilizer （NPK 15：15：15） at the rate of 250 kg/ha, using two varieties of c. olitorius. Five and six weeks after planting （WAP）, plants were assessed for growth and yields in pot and field experiments respectively, and also in residual studies. Application of compost significantly improved growth （heights）（36.50-41.56 cm）, while morphological and dry weight values increased with increase in compost. Marketable yield increase of 13.2%, 22.3%, 32.1% and 29.3% were recorded using 5, 10, 20 t/ha compost and NPK fertilizer respectively in the field. corresponding increase when ratooned were 40.0%, 42.9%, 57.1% and 52.0%, respectively. Application of compost at the rate of 20 t/ha performed better in the main and residual effect experiments compared to NPK fertilizer and other compost rates. Application of cassavas peels compost at the rate of 20 t/ha proved to be adequate for optimum growth and yield performance of c. olitorius.

comparative study of thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic treatment of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) wastewater

The paper provides a critical comparison between mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic treatment of PTA wastewater through diagnosis of a case study. Aspects covered are bioavailability, biodegradability, microbial population, thermodynamics, kinetics involved and bio-reactor design for PTA wastewater treatment. The results of the case study suggests that one- stage thermophilic anaerobic reactor coupled with coagulation-flocculation pre-treatment unit and an aerobic post treatment unit could be techno-economically viable for PTA wastewater treatment to ensure that the final effluent quality conforms to the international standard. The in-formation emanated from this study could be useful and thought provoking to the professionals and academia in the area of PTA wastewater treatment and can serve as impetus toward the development of research lines in similar problems like the treatment of other petrochemical wastewater such as phenol-con- taining wastewater, benzene/benzoic acid-con- taining wastewater or wastewater from other similar industrial settings.
