Prediction of Facial Height, Width, and Ratio from Thumbprints Ridge count and its Possible Applications

The fingerprints and face recognition are two biometric processes that comprise methods for uniquely recognizing humans based on certain number of intrinsic physical or behavioral *** objectives of the study were to predict the facial height(FH),facial width,and ratios from thumbprints ridge count and its possible *** was a cross-sectional study.A total of 457 participants were recruited.A fingerprint live scanner was used to capture the plain *** facial photograph was captured using a digital ***’s correlation analysis was used for the relationship between thumbprint ridge density and facial linear ***‑wise linear multiple regression analysis was used to predict facial distances from thumbprint ridge *** result showed that in males the right ulnar ridge count correlates negatively with lower facial width(LFW),upper facial width/upper FH(UFW/UFH),lower FH/FH(LFH/FH),and positively with UFH and UFW/*** right and left proximal ridge counts correlate with LFW and UFH,*** males,the right ulnar ridge count predicts LFW,UFW/LFW,UFW/UFH,and LFH/*** upper face height I,LFW,height of lower third of the face,UFW/LFW was predicted by right radial ridge ***,height of lower third of the face,and LFH/FH were predicted from left ulnar ridge count whereas left proximal ridge count predicted *** females only,the special upper face height I was predicted by right ulnar ridge *** conclusion,thumbprint ridge counts can be used to predict FH,width,ratios among Hausa *** possible application of fingerprints in facial characterization for used in human biology,paleodemography,and forensic science was demonstrated.

A Review of Trends in Import of Some Selected Foods in Nigeria (1981-2010): Matters Arising

This research assessed empirically the quantitative analysis of some selected food imports of Nigeria (rice, wheat and sugar). Time series data were used to examine the determinant of total food imports and the trend in the quantity of the food imported. The secondary data were obtained from institutional and national database over 1981-2010. Descriptive statistics, regression and correlation analysis were used as analytical tools. Statistical analysis shows that food deficit began in the 1970’s, when Nigeria started the importation of food to feed the country. The result of the correlation analysis shows that the postulated determinants of food imports were positively correlated with the quantity of food import. The test for the individual variables shows that;national income explains 40%, external reserves explains 38%, food production index explains 46%, population explains 58% and exchange rate explains 74% of the total variation in the quantity of food import. The over-all goodness of fit of the regression analysis result shows that, the postulated regressors namely, relative price, national income, external reserves, lagged index of domestic food production, population estimate and exchange rate explained approximately 70% of the variability in the quantity of the selected food imports for the period of study. consequently, there is the need for Nigeria to shift base from the ideology of nationalist orientation, as well as afro centric point of view and move towards unrestrained export-led growth that seeks to develop that market as the first option with corresponding development in international trade. Geospatial Analysis of Flood Risk and Vulnerability Assessment along River Benue Basin of Kogi State

River flooding has become a widely distributed and devastating natural disaster that has caused significant damages both economically and socially in Nigeria. Although, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) are always on time to provide flood warnings prior to flood disasters, spatial information pertaining to the areal extent vulnerable to the hazard are not usually made available. This study focuses on the application of geospatial techniques and quantitative research method for the assessment and analysis of flood risk and vulnerability assessment along the River Benue Basin of Kogi State. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images for 2010, 2014 and 2018 were used. These images were processed, digitized, interpolated, classified, overlaid and buffered using the ArcMap 10.3.1 GIS software to generate classified land use/cover maps, topographic map and flood physical vulnerability maps. Household questionnaires which contained structured questions were distributed and obtained to analyse the social-economic vulnerability of the study area using descriptive analysis. The study revealed that areas within 6-kilometre buffer from the River Benue are most vulnerable to flood hazard with the vulnerability decreasing towards the southern part. The two urban areas in the study area (Abejukolo and Oguma) are vulnerable to flood threat. Abejukolo is vulnerable due to high water footprint in the town and its surroundings. The factors that increase flood vulnerability of the inhabitants are low elevation, high illiteracy rate, high numbers of dependent population, poverty, low quality housing, poor land use and planning, inadequacy or absence of risk communication tools. The study recommends the development of guidelines for land use, continuous vulnerability mapping of the study area especially in the flood risk probability months (April to October), construction of dams to contain release water from the upstream, collaboration of NEMA with the

Anesthesia for cesarean Delivery in a Low-Resource Setting, an Initial Review

Background: Bearing in mind the recent advances in obstetric anesthesia, the safety of both mother and child is of paramount importance, especially in a setting where resources are limited. We set out to find the pattern of cases presenting for cesarean delivery and the types of anesthesias provided for the management of these patients. Methods: A retrospective survey was conducted involving all anesthetics provided for cesarean delivery from January 2006 to December 2009 in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria. Information such as age, indications and anesthetic technique, including drugs used, were extracted from patients’ records. Data were subjected to statistical analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0. Results: There were a total of 577 anaesthetics conducted for cesarean delivery during the period under review out of 4277 live births, giving a cesarean delivery rate of 13.5%. General anesthesia (GA) was administered on 266 (46%) of these patients, while 279 (48%) cases were done under subarachnoid block(SAB). 16 (3%) patients had combined GA and SAB, while 16 (3%) patients received epidural anesthesia. There were 302 emergency cesarean deliveries out of 577 cases, giving an emergency cesarean delivery rate of 52%. The commonest indication for cesarean delivery was two previous cesarean deliveries. conclusion: A large percentage of our obstetric cases are being done under general anesthesia. Though majority of the conducted regional anesthesia were spinals (SAB), only a few cases were done under epidural block. Subspecialty training of anesthetists will go a long way to improve the current trends.

BAcKGROUND Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus resulting from direct damage by hyperglycemia to the nerves and/or ischemia by microvascular injury to the endoneurial vessels which supply the nerves. Median nerve is one of the peripheral nerves commonly affected in diabetic neuropathy. The median nerve size has been studied in non-Nigerian diabetic populations. In attempt to contribute to existing literature, a study in a Nigerian population is *** To evaluate the cross-sectional area(cSA) of the median nerve using B-mode ultrasonography(USS) and the presence of peripheral neuropathy(PN) in a cohort of adult diabetic *** Demographic and anthropometric data of 85 adult diabetes mellitus(DM) and 85 age-and sex-matched apparently healthy control(Hc) subjects were taken. A complete physical examination was performed on all study subjects to determine the presence of PN and modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument(MNSI) was used to grade its severity. Venous blood was taken from the study subjects for fasting lipid profile(FLP), fasting blood glucose(FBG) and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1 c) while their MN cSA was evaluated at a point 5 cm proximal to(5 cmcATL) and at the carpal tunnel(cATL) by high-resolution Bmode USS. Data was analysed using SPSS version *** The mean MN cSA was significantly thicker in DM subjects compared to the Hc at 5 cmcATL(P cATL(P ce of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) further increased the MN cSA at the cATL(P cmcATL(P > 0.05). However, the severity of DPN had no additional effect on MN cSA 5 cm proximal to and at the cATL. The rate of passive and active attacks has been on the increase lately affecting both individuals and institutions. Even when internal control procedures are in place, malicious codes from intruders into the network have left so much to be desired. As a result, many chief Information Security Officers have grown grey hair because of their inability to effectively handle attacks from various ends. Various attempts and technologies have been made in the time past with a measure of success. Intrusion Detection Software (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Software, firewall, honey pots and honey nets have been deployed and with great respite from losses arising from cyber-attacks. cyber security is the duty of everyone and all must see it as such. As tiers of government and law enforcement agents are doing their best, everybody must be seen to play their parts. Fraudsters have also not seemed to be tired of seeking vulnerabilities to exploit. Then, cyber security experts should not let off their guards but make efforts to harden their security. A way of doing is to intelligently provide a solution that has the capability of detecting and proactively hardening security. This paper proposes a honey net model that is captcha-based and capable of extracting details from hackers with a view to building a robust defense against black hat attackers. This research was able to prevent the botnet with the use of captcha and also redirect suspected traffic to the honeynet which was then captured for the purpose of improving the security of the network. The result showed that any bandwidth greater than the set threshold was not allowed to go into the network but redirected to honeynet where details were logged. Also, with a threshold of 100 mbs, inbound traffic of higher bandwidth such as 110 mbs and 150 mbs was denied access thereby giving 100% detection rate.

Phyto-metals screening of selected anti-diabetic herbs and infused concoctions

Objective: To determine the levels of some selected heavy metals in both the selected anti-diabetic herbal plants and infused concoctions for diabetes ***: Ten anti-diabetic plant samples: pawpaw leaves(carica papaya), bitter melon leaves(Momordica charantia), holy basil leaves(Ocimum sanctum), bitter leaf(Vernonia amygdalina), ginger rhizome(Zingiber officinale), garlic(Allium sativum), African red pepper fruits(capsicum frutescens), negro pepper grain(Xylopia aethiopica), cashew leaves(Anacardium occidentale) and onion bulb(Allium cepa) were evaluated for heavy metals. These were digested using standard methods and analyzed for manganese, copper,nickel, chromium, zinc, cadmium and lead using atomic absorption *** infused concoctions(I and II) prepared from these medicinal herbs administered to diabetic patients were also analyzed for these heavy metals. concoction I contained all the plants and honey with the exception of Momordica charantia and Ocimum sanctum which constituted concoction II with water only. The data obtained were subject to descriptive(mean and standard deviation) and inferential(ANOVA and DMRT)***: chromium and nickel levels were below detection limits in concoction I while manganese [(0.11 ± 0.01) μg/g] and zinc [(0.09 ± 0.01) μg/g] were detected in concoction II. Honey contained manganese [(0.10 ± 0.01) μg/g] and nickel [(0.70 ± 0.01) μg/g]. The anti-diabetic medicinal herbs and infused concoctions(I and II) were observed to contain heavy metals below the compared ***: The study thus shows that the herbs and concoctions are safe from the heavy metals considered. However, right dosage of the anti-diabetic concoctions should always be considered to prevent possible chronic side effects from bio-accumulation of heavy metals.

Antidiarrheal activity of hexane extract of citrus limon peel in an experimental animal model

OBJEcTIVE： Acute diarrhea is one of the major illnesses that cause death in children, despite clinical interventions and the use of oral rehydration therapy. Thus, there is need to discover other effective, affordable and accessible treatments for this disease. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the effects of hexane extract of citrus limon peel （HEcLP） on castor oil-induced diarrhea in rats. METHODS： Diarrhea was induced in male albino Wistar rats weighing 100-150 g. The antidiarrheal activity of HEcLP at different oral dosages （5, 10 and 20 mg/kg） was investigated by counting the number of wet fecal pellets. Animals were further treated with propranolol, prazosin, nifedipine and atropine to assess the effects of receptor blockers on the activities of the extract. The effects of HEcLP on castor oil-induced enteropooling and the intestinal transit time of activated charcoal were also evaluated. RESULTS： Each of the 3 doses of c. limon significantly reduced （P 〈 0.05） the number of wet fecal pellets produced by animals, with 20 mg/kg HEcLP producing the highest percentage inhibition （34.2%） Wet fecal pellet inhibition by the standard drug Ioperamide （3 mg/kg p.o.） was 68.4% relative to the negative control. Blockage of 13 adrenergic receptors by propanolol abolished the antidiarrheal effects of HEcLP. Intestinal fluid accumulation was inhibited by 68.7% and 78.5% by 20 mg/kg HEcLP and Ioperamide respectively. Furthermore, 20 mg/kg HEcLP significantly （P 〈 0.05） reduced the percentage intestinal transit time （21.4% ± 1.42%）, relative to the control （34.2% ±4.29%）; atropine （5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection） significantly （P 〈 0.001） reduced the percentage intestinal transit time to 11.2% ±0.85%. cONcLUSION： These results suggest that c. limon peel possesses antidiarrheal effects through antisecretory and antimotility mechanisms that act through the β adrenergic system.

classical Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms(MPNs),i.e.,polycythemia vera,essential thrombocythemia,and primary/secondary myelofibrosis,are clonal disorders of the hematopoietic stem cell in which an uncontrolled proliferation of terminally differentiated myeloid cells *** are characterized by mutations in driver genes,the JAK2V617F point mutation being the most commonly detected genetic alteration in these hematological ***,JAK inhibition has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy in MPNs,with ruxolitinib being the first JAK inhibitor developed,approved,and prescribed in the management of these blood ***,the use of ruxolitinib has been associated with a potential risk of infection,including opportunistic infections and reactivation of hepatitis ***,we briefly describe the association between ruxolitinib treatment in MPNs and hepatitis B reactivation.
