Antimalarial potential of kolaviron,a biflavonoid from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei infection in Swiss albino mice

Objective:To investigate the antimalarial potential of kolaviron(KV),a biflavonoid fraction from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei(***)infection in Swiss albino ***:The study consists of seven groups of ten mice *** I,II and III were normal mice that received com ***1 and chloroquine(CQ),*** IV,V,ⅥandⅦwere infected mice that received corn ***,KYI and ***1 and KV2were given at 10-,100-and 200-mg/kg daily,respectively for three consecutive ***:Administration of KV1 and KV2 significantly(P<0.05)suppressed ***-infection in the mice by 85%and 90%.respectively,while CQ produced 87%suppression relative to untreated infected group after the fifth day of ***,KV2 significantly(P<0.05)increased the mean survival time of the infected mice by 175%.The biflavonoid prevented a drastic reduction in HCV from day4 of treatment,indicating its efficacy in ameliorating ***(P<0.05)oxidative stress assessed by the elevation of serum and hepatic malondialdehydewere observed in unlrealed ***-infected ***,senum and hepatic malondialdehyde levels increased by93%and 78%,resjiectively in the unlrealed infecled ***,antioxidant indices,viz;superoxide ***,*** peroxidase and reduced gluathione decreased significantly(P<0.05)in the tissues of untreated ***-infected *** significantly(P<0.05)ameliorated the ***-induced decrease in antioxidant status of the infected ***:This study shows that kolaviron,especially at 200 mg/kg,has high antimalarial activities in ***-infected mice,in addition to its known antioxidant properties.

Institutional Capacity and the Roles of Key Actors in Fire Disaster Risk Reduction: The Case of Ibadan, Nigeria

Inefficient and ineffective fire management practices are common to most urban areas of developing *** cities are typical examples of high vulnerability and low preparedness level for fire *** study examined the institutional framework for fire disaster risk reduction(FDRR) and explored the roles of key actors in fire disaster preparedness in Ibadan,a large traditional city in *** study was anchored on the concept of urban governance.A case study research design was adopted using primary and secondary *** data were obtained through field observation aided by a structured checklist and key informant *** were conducted on key officials of the major organs for FDRR-Oyo State Fire Service(OSFS) and Oyo State Emergency Management Agency(OYSEMA).The study identified a disjointed and fragmented approach to fire *** relating to fire risk reduction and disaster recovery were domiciled under the OYSEMA,while emergency response to fire disasters was the prerogative of the *** results show that only five out of 11 local government areas had public fire stations;only three fire stations had an on-site water supply;three fire stations lacked firefighting vehicles;and distribution of fire stations and facilities was *** fire stations responded to 80% of all fire cases in 12 *** study concluded that the institutional structure and resources for fire risk reduction was more empowered to respond to fire disaster,rather than facilitating preparedness capacity to reduce disaster risk.

Analysis of the impact of treatments on HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis co-infected population under random perturbations

In this work, we study the impact of treatments at different stages of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) co-infection in a population under the influence of random perturbations. This is achieved by constructing a stochastic epidemic model describing the transmission and treatment of the diseases. The model is created with the assumption that transmission rates fluctuate rapidly compared to the evolution of the untreated diseases. The basic reproduction numbers corresponding to the population with HIV infection only (with n stages of infections and treatments), the population with tuberculosis infection only, and the overall population with co-infection (with n stages of infection/treatments) are derived in the presence and absence of noise perturbations. These are used to discuss the long term behavior of the population around a disease-free equilibrium and an endemic equilibrium, and to analyze the effect of noise and treatments on the system. We also showed conditions under which TB infected population dynamic undergoes backward bifurcation and give conditions for disease eradication in the entire population. Analysis shows that small perturbations to the disease-free equilibrium can initially grow under certain conditions, and the introduction of TB treatment is effective in eliminating the co-infection. Numerical simulations are presented for validation of our results using published parameters.

The wide acceptability of Nigerian hip hop music,home and abroad,indicates increasing value of the inclusion of local popular languages in the composition and performance of the *** the text of many of the award winning singles and albums are mixtures of different languages ranging from English,Pidgin English,Yoruba,Igbo and other local *** on Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of structuralism,this study examines meaning construction in hip hop music in *** focusing on the Nigerian hip hop artists,who adopt different slangs embedded with codes considered absurd within the mainstream cultural milieu,the study closely investigates constructed meanings in the lyrics of four Nigerian award winning hip hop *** the artists adopted multilingual codes-switching from one language to another in presentation of their *** codes in the songs generally symbolise and present messages or meaning that appears out of the mainstream cultural *** and artistes meet at the level of *** article argues that Nigerian artists creatively present a sub-culture where they and their fans can relate through codes and words embedded with symbolic meanings shared by both artists and fans.

Oxidative Stress and Reduced Vitamins C and E Levels Are Associated with Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) still remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Nigeria, there is little information on antioxidant status of TB patients. In this study, effects of oxidative stress markers and vitamins C and E were investigated in pulmonary TB patients at-tending a health care facility in Nigeria. Methods: Sputum specimens were processed for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) while rifampicin resistance was determined by GeneXpert/Rif assay. Patients were screened for HIV after adequate counselling. Assays for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialde- hyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), myeloperoxidase (MPx), xanthine oxidase (XO), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glu-tathione peroxidase (GPx), α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid were estimated using standard me- thods. Results: Of the 83 recruited subjects, 29 (34.9%) were AFB negative, 30 (36.1%) were AFB positive while 24 (29.0%) were positive for rifampicin resistance. Overall, HIV prevalence was 6.0% while higher rate of 16.7% was found among the rifampicin resistant subjects. Plasma concentrations of H2O2, MDA and PC and also MPx and XO activities were significantly higher among rifampicin resistant subjects compared with AFB positive and AFB negative groups (P < 0.05). Plasma concentration of GSH and the activities of SOD, GST and GPX were significantly reduced in rifampicin resistant subjects compared with the 2 other groups (P < 0.05). The plasma activity of CAT was similar between rifampicin resistant and AFB positive subjects but significantly lower when compared with AFB negative group. Rifampicin resistant subjects had significantly lower concentrations of α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid compared with 2 other groups (P < 0.05). Enhanced enzymatic removal of anthracene by the mangrove soil-derived fungus,Aspergillus sydowii BPOI

The present study investigated the efficiency of Aspergillus sydowii strain bpol(GenBank Accession Number:MK373021)in the removal of anthracene(100 mg/L).Optimal degradation efficiency(98.7%)was observed at neutral pH,temperature(30℃),biomass weight(2 g)and salinity(0.2%w/v)within 72 *** enzyme analyses revealed 131%,107%,and 89%induction in laccase,lignin peroxidase,and manganese peroxidase respectively during anthracene ***,the degradation efficiency(99.8%)and enzyme induction were significantly enhanced with the addition of 100 mg/L of citric acid and glucose to the *** varying anthracene concentrations(100-500 mg/L),the degradation rate constants(K1)peaked with increasing concentration of anthracene while the half-life(t1/2)decreases with increase in anthracene *** of fit(R2=0.976 and 0.982)was observed when the experimental data were subjected to Langmuir and Temkin models respectively which affirmed the monolayer and heterogeneous nature exhibited by *** cells during *** distinct metabolites;anthracene-1,8,9(2H,8aH,9aH)-trione,2,4adihydronaphthalene-1,5-dione,l,3,3a,7a-tetrahydro-2-benzofuran-4,7-dione and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid was obtained through Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry(GC-MS).*** exhibited promising potentials in the removal of PAHs.

CA-KSE: a combinatorial algorithm for benchmarking in knowledge sharing environment

Purpose–Over the past decade,the cost of product development has increased drastically,and this is due to the inability of most enterprises to locate suitable and optimal collaborators for knowledge ***,knowledge sharing is a mechanism that helps people find the best collaborators with relevant ***,a new approach for locating optimal collaborators with relevant knowledge is needed,which couldhelp enterprisein reducingcost andtime ina *** aimsto discuss these ***/methodology/approach–One unique challenge in the domain of knowledge sharing is that collaborators do not possess the same number of events resident in the knowledge available for *** this paper,the authors present a new approach for locating optimal collaborators in knowledge-sharing environment using the combinatorial algorithm(CA-KSE).Findings–The proposed pattern-matching approach implemented in Java is considered efficient for solving the issue peculiar to collaboration in knowledge-sharing *** authors benchmarked the proposed approach with its semi-global pairwise alignment and global alignment counterparts through scores comparison and the receiver operating characteristic *** results obtained from the comparisons showedthat CA-KSEis a perfect test havinganarea undercurveof 0.9659,comparedto the other *** limitations/implications–The paper has proposed an efficient algorithm,which is considered better than related methods,for matching several collaborators(more than two)in KS *** method could be deployed in medical field for gene analysis,software organizations for distributed development and academics for knowledge ***/value–One sign of strength of this approach,compared to most sequence alignment approaches that can only match two collaborators at a time,is that it can match several collaborators at a faster rate.
