Toward cost-effective residential energy reduction and community impacts: A data-based machine learning approach

Many *** incentivize residential energy reduction through rebates,often in response to state mandates for energy reduction or from a desire to reduce demand to mitigate the need to grow generating *** assumption built into incentive programs is that the least efficient residences will be more likely take advantage of the ***,however,is not always the *** main goal of this study was to determine the potential for prioritized incentivization,i.e.,prioritizing incentives that deliver the greatest energy savings per invest-ment through an entire *** uses a data mining approach that leverages known building and energy characteristics for predicting energy consumption of houses that collectively can be considered representative of all residences within an entire *** this model,it estimates natural gas consumption and savings,and corresponding implementation costs associated with the adoption of the most impactful energy reduction *** resulting savings and cost estimates allow us to develop a sequential energy reduction strategy whereby the most economic measures within the whole utility district are *** results show that an energy reduction of 36%can be achieved at a levelized cost of less than$14 per mmBTU($14,780 per MJ),demonstrating the strong potential of this approach.A corresponding Economic Input–Output Analysis captures the cascading community economic impacts of this *** results show that for the roughly 45,000 single-family residences in the studied region,an initial energy efficiency investment of$26M could result in a total cascading multiplier economic impact of$41M and additional economic impacts of$2.2M for the lifetime of the considered energy efficiency measures.

Impact of Presence or Absence of Trehalose during Vitrification on Viability and Development of Vitrified/Warmed Immature Dromedary Camel Oocytes

Vitrification of immature oocytes at the germinal vesicle (GV) stage is important to preserve female gametes. The standard formula for vitrification solutions has long been a debate. Herein, we investigated the effect of the presence or absence of trehalose in vitrification solution on viability, in vitro maturation (IVM) rates, and development of vitrified/warmed immature dromedary camel oocytes. Cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) obtained at slaughter from the ovaries of mature she-camels were randomly allocated into three groups;namely, control group, oocytes were directly subjected to IVM without vitrification, vitrification solution 1 (VS1) group, oocytes were vitrified in a solution composed of 25% ethylene glycol (EG) plus 25% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) + 0.5 M trehalose;and vitrification solution 2 (VS2) group, oocytes were vitrified in a solution composed of 25% EG plus 25% DMSO. Vitrification of COCs was conducted by open pulled straws (OPS) method. Following vitrification and warming, morphologically viable oocytes were matured in vitro for 36 h. COCs were then fertilized and cultured in vitro for 7 days. The percentage of viable oocytes was significantly higher (P 0.05) in VS2 than VS1 group (80.0% vs. 63.3%, respectively). Nuclear maturation, cleavage (48 h post-insemination;pi), and blastocyst rates (7 days pi) were significantly higher (P elopment rates between VS2 and control groups. In conclusion, vitrification of immature dromedary camel oocytes in trehalose-free solution (VS2) was more advantageous than that in trehalose supplemented media since it did not reduce viability and development.

Clinical Significance of Serum Galectin-1 and Its Tissue Immunohistochemical Expression in Serous Ovarian Carcinoma Patients

Objectives: Serous ovarian carcinoma (SOC) is the commonest ovarian carcinoma type with poor prognosis due to early metastasis and first presentation with advanced stage. In this work, we investigated serum level of Galactin-1 (Gal-1) and its tissue immunohistochemical expression in SOC patients at different stages trying to find out its significance as a diagnostic and prognostic marker. Patients and methods: The study included 95 females I-Control group: Twenty five healthy females;II-Patients group: Seventy females diagnosed as SOC at different stages;Stage I: 8 cases, Stage II: 12 cases, Stage III: 32 cases and Stage VI:18 cases. Serum Galectin-1 and CA-125 were measured by elIZA and tissue Galectin-1 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. All patients were followed for up to 3 years after surgery. Results: Serum Gal-1 and CA-125 levels were significantly higehr in SOC patients compared to controls (p 0.001). We found a direct positive statistically significant correlation between serum Gal-1 and CA125 levels (p 0.001). Serum Gal-1 at cut off value > 135 ng/ml was superior to CA-125 a cut off value > 49 u/ml with sensitivity, specificity of 100%, vs 88.57, 96% for CA-125. Serum Gal-1 was significantly associated with tumor stage (p 0.001). Immunohistochemistry showed that patients with strong Gal-1 expression had higher serum level (p = 0.002). Stromal and tumor Gal-1 expression were significantly correlated with tumor grade (p 0.001) and stage (p = 0.001). Serum Gal-1, CA-125 and IHC Gal-1 expression were associated with poor survival (p 0.001, p = 0.009 and p = 0.002) respectively. Conclusion: Serum Gal-1 and its tissue IHC expression are useful diagnostic and prognostic markers for SOC patients.

Multiphysics simulation of VVER-1200 fuel performance during normal operating conditions

Nuclear fuel performance modeling and simulation are critical tasks for nuclear fuel design optimization and safety analysis under normal and transient *** performance is a complicated phenomenon that involves thermal,mechanical,and irradiation mechanisms and requires special multiphysics *** this study,a fuel performance model was developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics *** modeling was performed for a 2D axis-symmetric geometry of a UO2fuel pellet in the E110 clad for VVER-1200 *** modeling considers all relevant phenomena,including heat generation and conduction,gap heat transfer,elastic strain,mechanical contact,thermal expansion,grain growth,densification,fission gas generation and release,fission product swelling,gap/plenum pressure,and cladding thermal and irradiation *** model was validated using a code-to-code evaluation of the fuel pellet centerline and surface temperatures in the case of constant power,in addition to validation of fission gas release(FGR)*** prediction proved that the model could perform according to previously published VVER nuclear fuel performance parameters.A sensitivity study was also conducted to assess the effects of uncertainty on some of the model *** model was then used to predict the VVER-1200 fuel performance parameters as a function of burnup,including the temperature profiles,gap width,fission gas release,and plenum pressure.A compilation of related material and thermomechanical models was conducted and included in the modeling to allow the user to investigate different material/performance *** the model was developed for normal operating conditions,it can be modified to include off-normal operating conditions.
