ESP Needs Analysis： A Case Study of PEH Students, University of Khartoum

Needs analysis is considered a necessary first step in designing ESP courses. This study, therefore, aims at analysing students at the Faculty of Public and Environmental Health （PEH） at the University of Khartoum （U of K）, Sudan, needs for English language. The study adopted the needs analysis framework suggested by Dudley-Evans and St John （1998） focusing on target needs analysis, present situation analysis, and learning means needs analysis. The study used a questionnaire, a proficiency test, and an interview to collect data. The participants were 490 students at PEH （390 participated in the questionnaire and 100 in the proficiency test） and two professors at the Faculty. The study found that PEH students need English language for academic study. The students rated their proficiency as good, but the test revealed that they were of weak proficiency. All the four skills in addition to vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are regarded as important to the students. Similarly, almost all the sub-skills are found to be important. The students have a variety of leaming needs such as learning in pairs, groups, and through ICT. The study recommends that PEH students＇ proficiency should be raised and a course that meets the students＇ needs is needed.

A Comparative Analysis on Surgical Outcomes and Complications of Endoscopic and Open Vein Harvesting Techniques

Objective: The great saphenous vein (GSV) is commonly used as a conduit for grafting during CABG surgery, and open GSV harvesting (OVH), commonly used with long incision to expose the vein. However, endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) is an alternative approach, utilizing specialized instruments and small incisions to harvest the vein. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of patients who underwent Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) requiring great saphenous vein (GSV) harvesting which was done by EVH or OVH procedures. Demographic variables, including age and gender, were assessed for both groups. Intraoperative variables such as the number of grafts, cardiopulmonary bypass time, X clamp time, and type of procedure were analyzed. Postoperative variables, including infection and bleeding rates, were also evaluated. Results: The study included 30 patients each undergoing Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) with need of great saphenous vein harvesting which was done by EVH and OVH. Demographic variables were well-matched between the two groups in terms of age, while a significant difference in gender distribution was observed. Obesity and smoking were more prevalent in the OVH group, and EVH was associated with a higher mean number of grafts compared to OVH. Conversion to an open technique occurred in a portion of the EVH cases, and infection rates did not significantly differ between the EVH and OVH groups. However, the incidence of postoperative bleeding was significantly higher in the EVH group. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the demographic, intraoperative, and postoperative variables associated with EVH and OVH techniques. EVH demonstrated advantages in terms of reduced infection rates compared to OVH. However, the higher incidence of postoperative bleeding associated with EVH raises concerns about potential risks.

This study investigates if the anti-tumor effect of Pterostilbene in the SKOV3 ovarian cancer(OC)cell line involves inhibition of cell metabolism and tested in this effect involves modulating AMPK and Akt-induced regulation of ***,SKOV3 cells were cultured in the humidified conditions in DMEM media for 24 h with or without increasing concentration of ***,the cells were incubated with Pterostilbene(IC_(50)=50μM)under similar conditions with or without pre-incubation with Dorsomorphin,an AMPK *** a dose-dependent manner,Pterostilbene inhibited SKOV3 cell survival and increased their lysate levels of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and single-stranded DNA(ssDNA).When SKOV3 cells were treated with 50μM Pterostilbene,Pterostilbene significantly suppressed cell migration and invasion,reduced lysate levels of lactic acid and the optical density of Oil Red O staining,and increased lysate glucose *** also increased levels of malondialdehyde(MDA),reactive oxygen species(ROS),and induced intrinsic cell apoptosis by upregulating protein levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 and reducing protein levels of ***,Pterostilbene reduced mRNA levels of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1(SREBP-1),fatty acid synthase(FAS),acetyl CoA carboxylase-1(ACC-1),and AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK).Furthermore,Pterostilbene increased the protein levels of p-AMPK,p-p53,p-raptor,p-TSC-2,but significantly decreased protein levels of p-Akt,p-TSC-2,p-mTOR,p-S6K1,and *** with Dorsomorphin(CC)abolished all the anti-tumorigenesis effects afforded by Pterostilbene and prevented Pterostilbene-induced phosphorylation of Akt,p53,and *** conclusion,the tumorsuppressive effect of Pterostilbene in SKOV3 cells involves the induction of ROS and inhibition of dysregulation cell metabolism mainly due to AMPK-induced Akt-dependent or independent suppression of mTOR.
