Protein quality of four indigenous edible insect species in Nigeria

Food security is a serious concern particularly for developing *** overcome hunger and malnutrition there is a need for increased research towards finding alternative and cheaper sources of *** have been reported to be rich in protein and could be alternative sources of *** work was therefore designed to determine the protein quality of moth caterpillar,termite,cricket and grasshopper and the effects of diets supplemented with these insects on some biochemical and haematological indices of *** amino acid compositions of the insects were determined using standard analytical *** iso-nitrogenous and isocaloric diets were formulated on a 10%protein basis with the insects and casein.A Nitrogen free diet was also formulated as *** six(36)young weanling albino rats(21–28 days old)were divided into 6 groups and fed with the diets ad libitum for 28 *** weekly weight gain and daily feed intake were recorded,urine and faeces were collected for nitrogen determination using Kjedahl method and the data obtained used to calculate the various protein quality *** the feeding trial periods,the rats were sacrificed,blood samples collected and organs excised for various *** was found to have the highest amino acid score(0.91),protein efficiency ratio(1.78),net protein ratio(3.04)biological value(93.02%)and protein digestibility corrected for amino acid score(0.73)as compared to other insect proteins *** organ body weight ratios of the liver,spleen,lung and heart of rats placed on the insect supplemented diets were not significantly different(p>0.05)from those fed with casein and basal *** total protein concentrations in rats fed with cricket diet were not significantly different(p>0.05)from those fed casein diet while serum LDL cholesterol concentration was lowest in rats fed cricket *** finding in this work that the selected insects are nutritious and safe for consumption may a

Spectrum of Bladder Cancer Patients Morbidity and Mortality in a Tertiary Hospital of Northwestern Nigeria: A 7-Year Review

Background: Bladder cancer is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in our institution due to the late presentation. Morbidity is defined as a development of complications that may lead to mortality. Uraemia is a common presentation that constitutes a management challenge in our patients. We study the spectrum of morbidity and mortality in bladder cancer patients in our institution. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients with clinical, radiological, cytological and or histological features of bladder cancer that had a morbidity and or mortality managed at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Sokoto from January 2011 to December, 2017. Data were retrieved from patients’ case notes via a proforma and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 version for windows. The results were presented in number percent, tables and chart. Results: There were morbidity and or mortality in 234 bladder cancer patients within the study period with a mean age of 48.4 ± 14.1 years and a range of 3 - 106 years. There were 219 males (91.5%) and 20 females (8.5%) with a male to female ratio of 11:1. There were haematuria and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in 230 patients (98.3%). There were necroturia ± weight loss and anorexia in 126 patients (53.8%). There was urinary tract infection (UTI) in 75 patients (32.1%), anaemia in 131 patients (56.0%) and uraemia in 161 patients (68.8%). Mortality was recorded in 84 patients (35.9%) which was due to uraemia in 52 patients (22.2%), urosepsis in 22 patients (9.4%) and anaemia in 8 patients (3.4%), intestinal obstruction and blood transfusion reaction in 1 patient each (0.4%). Conclusion: Anaemia, urosepsis and uraemia are the most common causes of morbidity and or mortality in bladder tumour patients in Sokoto. This poses great diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma to the urologist, patients and their relatives.

FAIR Guidelines and Data Regulatory Framework for Digital Health in Nigeria

Adopting the FAIR Guidelines—that data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable(FAIR)—in the health data system in Nigeria will help protect data against use by unauthorised parties, while also making data more accessible to legitimate users. However, little is known about the FAIR Guidelines and their compatibility with data and health laws and policies in Nigeria. This study assesses the governance framework for digital and health/e Health policies in Nigeria and explores the possibility of a policy window opening for the FAIR Guidelines to be adopted and implemented in Nigeria’s e Health sector. Ten Nigerian policy documents were examined for mention of the FAIR Guidelines(or FAIR Equivalent terminology) and the 15 sub-criteria or facets. The analysis found that although the FAIR Guidelines are not explicitly mentioned, 70% of the documents contain FAIR Equivalent terminology. The Nigeria Data Protection Regulation contained the most FAIR Equivalent principles(73%) and some of the remaining nine documents also contained some FAIR Equivalent principles(between 0–60%). Accordingly, it can be concluded that a policy window is open for the FAIR Guidelines to be adopted and implemented in Nigeria’s e Health sector.

Estimation of the case fatality rate of COVID-19 epidemiological data in Nigeria using statistical regression analysis

Following the emergence of COVID-19 outbreak,numbers of studies have been conducted to curtail the global spread of the virus by identifying epidemiological changes of the disease through developing statistical models,estimation of the basic reproduction number,displaying the daily reports of confirmed and deaths cases,which are closely related to the present *** and comprehensive estimation method of the epidemiological data is required to understand the actual situation of fatalities caused by the *** fatality rate(CFR)is one of the cardinal epidemiological parameters that adequately explains epidemiology of the outbreak of a *** the present study,we employed two statistical regression models such as the linear and polynomial models in order to estimate the CFR,based on the early phase of COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria(44 days since first reported COVID-19 death).The estimate of the CFR was determined based on cumulative number of confirmed cases and deaths reported from 23 March to 30 April,*** results from the linear model estimated that the CFR was 3.11%(95%CI:2.59%-3.80%)with R2 value of 90%and p-value of<*** findings from the polynomial model suggest that the CFR associated with the Nigerian outbreak is 3.0%and may range from 2.23%to 3.42%with R2 value of 93%and p-value of<***,the polynomial regression model with the higher R2 value fits the dataset well and provides better estimate of CFR for the reported COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Tasawwuf and Its Role in Minimizing Corruption and Insurgency Among Muslims in Northern Nigeria

Tasawwuf which refers to as zuhd during the time of the prophet is being distorted with new concept contrary to the teachings of the prophet and his companions. As a result, it is misunderstood by some Muslims and few bothers to look into its reality. The current practiced of tasawwuf to some extend contradictory to the zuhd displayed during the time of the prophet and his companions. The adulteration in it has made many Muslims not to pay attention： less learning or benefitting from its fruits. The current corrupt situation among Muslims in Northern Nigeria can be attributed to absence of zuhd. The fact that corrupt mind can lead to many problems, generated into insurgency： causing a lot of damages and loss of life and property. Therefore, the implementation of zuhd according to the teachings and practice of the prophet, his companions, and early Sunni scholars can be of assistance in reducing the level of corruption among Muslims in Northern Nigeria, This can be achieved through proper Islamic education mainly for the attainment of Allah＇s pleasure. By this, a Muslim seeks for the worldly gains as a means to an end, and deceased from following his whims and caprices.

Petroleum Potentials of the Nigerian Benue Trough and Anambra Basin: A Regional Synthesis

A review on the geology and petroleum potentials of the Nigerian Benue Trough and Anambra Basin is done to identify potential petroleum systems in the basins. The tectonic, stratigraphic and organic geochemical evaluations of these basins suggest the similarity with the contiguous basins of Chad and Niger Republics and Sudan, where commercial oil discovery have been made. At least two potential petroleum systems may be presented in the basins: the Lower Cretaceous petroleum system likely capable of both oil and gas generation and the Upper Cretaceous petroleum system that could be mainly gas-generating. These systems are closely correlative in temporal disposition, structures, source and reservoir rocks and perhaps generation mechanism to what obtains in the Muglad Basin of Sudan and Termit Basin of Niger and Chad Republics. They are very effective in planning future exploration campaigns in the basins.

Effect of Desertification on Some Selected Soil Properties in a Semi Arid Part of Northwestern Nigeria

Gudu, being a fringe local government area of Sokoto State of Nigeria, is in the heart of desertification zone of Nigeria where agriculture as the sole means of livelihood for the ever increasing population is endangered. The extent of the effect of desertification on the soil quality is unknown, and for sustainable livelihood, timely information on vegetation and soil resources of the area is of essence. It was therefore hypothesized that desertification has effect on the Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and particle size. Objectives include assessment of vegetation condition of the area, vegetation change detection and identification of hotspots and assessment of soil properties in the hotspots. Biennial time series (1998 and 2014) of 1-km 10-day SPOT Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was subjected to Time Series Analysis (TSA). Vegetation change detection was carried out to isolate hotspots (improved and degraded areas) from which soil samples were taken. ANOVA was used to test for difference in the measured soil properties at P < 0.05. Results show a general reduction vegetation cover, typical of a semi arid environment. SOC was generally low but higher in improved vegetation areas. While the degraded areas were purely sandy, improved vegetation was either Sand clay loam or Loamy sand, indicating a relationship between SOC and soil texture. It was concluded that desertification had effect on the selected soil properties in the study area. Embarkation on massive afforestation programme and protection of existing forest reserves coupled with environmental education for the farmers were recommended.
