A low-grade gold ore from Ilesha-Itagunmodi, south western Nigeria was panned, dried and ball-milled before sieving into fractions. The morphological, mineralogical and chemical composition was studied by optical micro-scopy (Reflected and Transmission), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF), respectively. The sieved fractions were subjected to chemical analysis (AAS). The +106 μm sieve had the highest concentration of the mineral and was then selected for the upgrade through froth flotation using standard reagents. In this paper a report on a 2k factorial experiment that provides an understanding of the impact of operational variables on the quantity of gold mineral obtained from the ore during froth flotation is presented. Analysis results showed that Ilesha-Itagunmodi gold ore is non-refractory with fine grain particles, amenable to froth flotation and contained about 20 other associated minerals, gold had a concentration of about 0.0024%. A com-bination of P-Xanthate and amine glycol collectors at a pH of 9.2 only produced a considerable increase in gold yield. This translated to about 87.13% increase in recovery of gold from the ore. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out and the model equation obtained was subsequently optimised to obtain a model equation that could be used in predicting the recoverable quantity of gold, indicating that F11,1-values for Collector concentration, Frother concentration, pH and Conditioning time were 156.86, 6.96, 43.81, and 56.77 respectively. A model with an F value of 88.41 was obtained which indicated that the model was significant. The model equation obtained was subsequently optimised to be able to predict the recoverable quantity of gold. A “Pred R-Squared” value of 0.9365 (93.65%) was also obtained and is in reasonable agreement with the “Adj R-Squared” value of 0.9534 (95.34%). It was established that Ilesha placer gold ore is amenable to froth flotation using standard reagents.

Drought and heat are major environmental stresses that continually influence plant growth and development. Under field conditions, these stresses occur more frequently in combination than alone, which magnifies corresponding detrimental effects on the growth and productivity of agriculturally important crops. Plant responses to such abiotic stresses are quite complex and manifested in a range of developmental, molecular, and physiological modifications that lead either to stress sensitivity or tolerance/resistance. Maize (Zea mays L.) is known for its sensitivity to abiotic stresses, which often results in substantial loss in crop productivity. Bioaugmentation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has the potential to mitigate the adverse effects of drought and heat stresses on plants. Hence, this is considered a promising and eco-friendly strategy to ensure sustainable and long-term maize production under adverse climatic conditions. These microorganisms possess various plant growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics that can induce drought and heat tolerance in maize plants by directly or indirectly influencing molecular, metabolic, and physiological stress responses of plants. This review aims to assess the current knowledge regarding the ability of PGPR to induce drought and heat stress tolerance in maize plants. Furthermore, the drought and heat stress-induced expression of drought and heat stress response genes for this crop is discussed with the mechanisms through which PGPR alter maize stress response gene expression.

Physical and mechanical characteristics of composite briquette from coal and pretreated wood fines

Melina wood torrefied at 260℃ for 60 min was agglomerated with lean grade coal fines into composite briquettes using pitch as *** biomass(3%-20%)and coal fines(80%-97%)were blended together to produce the composite briquettes under a hydraulic press(28 MPa).The briquettes were cured at 300℃.Density,water resistance,drop to fracture,impact resistance,and cold crushing strength were evaluated for the composite *** proximate,ultimate,and calorific value analyses were carried out according to different ASTM *** studies were carried out using scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyzer equipped with energy dispersive *** Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer(FTIR)was used to obtain the functional groups in the raw materials and *** density of the composite briquettes ranged from 0.92 to 1.31 g/cm^(3) after *** with95%).The highest cold crushing strength of 4 MPa was obtained for briquettes produced from 97%coal fines and 3%torrefied *** highest drop to fracture(54 times/2 m)and impact resistance index(1350)were obtained for the sample produced from 97%coal and 3%torrefied *** fixed and elemental carbons of the briquettes showed a mild improvement compared to the raw *** peaks from FTIR spectra for the briquettes shows the presence of aromatic C=C bonds and phenolic OH *** composite briquettes with up to 20%torrefied biomass can all be useful as fuel for various applications.

Neuromodulatory effects of ethyl acetate fraction of Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract in rats with lead-induced oxidative stress

Objective: This study investigated the ameliorative potential of Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract against lead-induced brain damage in ***: Thirty male rats were divided into 5 groups of 6 rats each. Lead-acetate toxicity was induced by intraperitoneal injection(10 mg/kg body weight(b.w.)) in Groups B–E. Group A(control) and Group B(lead-acetate) were left untreated; vitamin C(200 mg/kg b.w.) was administered to Group C; ethyl acetate fraction from Z. officinale extract(200 and 100 mg/kg b.w.) was administered to Group D and E by oral gavage once daily for 7 days. Changes in the content of some key marker enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase(AChE), butyrylcholinesterase(BChE), monoamine oxidase(MAO), epinephrine, dopamine,Na^+/K^+-ATPase, catalase(CAT), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx) as well as malonaldehyde(MDA) levels were determined in ***: Exposure to lead acetate resulted in a significant decrease(P < 0.05) in the activities of BChE,AChE, Na^+/K^+-ATPase, SOD, CAT and GPx with a corresponding increase in the levels of MDA, xanthine oxidase, epinephrine, dopamine and MAO relative to the control group. Levels of all disrupted parameters were alleviated by co-administration of Z. officinale fraction and by the standard drug, vitamin ***: These results suggest that ethyl acetate fraction of Z. officinale extract attenuates leadinduced brain damage and might have therapeutic potential as a supplement that can be applied in lead poisoning.

Effectiveness of Gravity Separation of Low Grade Nigerian Gold Ore Using Shaking Table

The response of Imogbara (Nigeria) gold ore to shaking tabling gravity separation methods was investigated in this research work. Gold concentration in run-off mines is usually as low as 0.005 ppm and must be upgraded in order to reduce the recovery process extraction costs. Gravity separation method (the focus of this work) is one of the readily affordable beneficiation methods. Shaking table is a developed separation equipment of gravity method that has been adopted to increase concentrate based on difference of specific gravity. The output result of the concentration process using shaking table is basically influenced by a number of variables, such as rotational shaking speed, particle size and deck slope. In this research, the range of rotational speed shaking was between 100 rpm and 200 rpm, the particle size was between (−300 μm > X −75 μm) and deck slope was between 10°and 30°. EDXRF was used to measure gold concentration in the concentrate as well as the tailings. The result shows that the optimum condition is obtained at a shaking speed of 100 rpm, with a slope of 10°and particle size less than 75 μm.

Thermochemical recycling of waste disposable facemasks in a non-electrically powered system

The COVID-19 pandemic encouraged the use of plastic-based personal protective equipment (PPE), which aidedgreatly in its management. However, the increased production and usage of these PPEs put a strain on the environment,especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. This has led various researchers to study low-costand effective technologies for the recycling of these materials. One such material is disposable facemasks. However,previous studies have only been able to engage electrically powered reactors for their thermochemical conversion,which is a challenge as these reactors cannot be used in regions with an insufficient supply of electricity. In thisstudy, the authors utilized a biomass-powered reactor for the conversion of waste disposable facemasks and almondleaves into hybrid biochar. The reactor, which is relatively cheap, simple to use, environmentally friendly, and modifiedfor biochar production, is biomass-powered. The co-carbonization process, which lasted 100 min, produced a 46%biochar yield, which is higher than previously obtained biochar yields by other researchers. The biochar thus obtainedwas characterized to determine its properties. FTIR analysis showed that the biochar contained functional groupssuch as alkenes, alkynes, hydroxyls, amines, and carbonyls. The EDX analysis revealed that the biochar was primarilymade of carbon, tellurium, oxygen, and calcium in the ratios of 57%, 19%, 9%, and 7%, respectively. The inclusion ofthe facemask decreased the surface area and porosity of the biochar material, as evidenced by its surface area andpore characteristics.

Influence of Glyphaea brevis twig extract on nucleus, tight junctions and expression of inhibin-β, stem cell factor, and androgen binding protein in TM4 Sertoli cells

Objective: To examine the influence of Glyphaea (G.) brevis twig extract on the mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity, integrity of the tight junctions between adjacent cells, mitochondria, apoptosis, nucleus and expression of inhibin-β, stem cell factor, and androgen binding protein in TM4 Sertoli cells. Methods: TM4 cell line was used in this study as it exhibited properties similar to the Sertoli cells. TM4 Sertoli cells were exposed to G. brevis twig extract (0.1, 1.0, 10.0, 100.0, or 1000.0μg/mL) for 24, 48 and 72 h. Parameters studied included cell viability [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay], mitochondrial membrane potential (tetra methyl rhodamine ethyl ester dye), transepithelial electrical resistance, apoptosis (Annexin V Alexa Fluor?488/propidium iodide assay) and mRNA expression (quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction). Results: G. brevis twig extract had no cytotoxic impact on cell viability, thus, considerably increasing the activity of mitochondrial dehydrogenase enzyme after 24 and 72 h exposure. Transepithelial electrical resistance values revealed substantial (P<0.05) rise in treated groups, especially after 72 h of treatment. Moreover, there was a significant decrease in mitochondrial depolarization of TM4 Sertoli cells exposed to G. brevis twig extract when compared to controls. In addition, G. brevis twig extract significantly reduced necrosis and apoptosis of TM4 Sertoli cells when compared to control. Nevertheless, fluorescence microscopy revealed that the nuclei were egg-shaped and marked uniformly with consistent cell shape at the middle of the TM4 Sertoli cells. Significant stimulatory effects were observed on mRNA levels of inhibin-β, androgen binding protein and stem cell factor. Conclusions: G. brevis twig extract may increase the secretory roles of TM4 Sertoli cells, cells proliferation, as well as cell-cell tight junction integrity. Thus, G. brevis twig may enhance spermatogenesis
