Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses which adversely affect crop plants limiting growth and yield *** and functional characterization of drought stress-induced genes has contributed to a better understanding of how plants respond and adapt to the drought *** the present study,differential display technique was employed to study the gene expression of rice plants at the reproductive stage that were subjected to drought stress by withholding water,Pseudomonas fluorescens strain(Pf1) treated plants subjected for drought stress by withholding water and control(well-watered).Differentially expressed c DNAs of six genes(COX1,PKDP,b ZIP1,AP2-EREBP,Hsp20 and COC1) were identified,cloned and ***-time q PCR analysis showed that all the six genes were upregulated in drought-stressed plants treated with *** revealed that the remarkable influence of Pf1 colonization leads to drought tolerance at the reproductive *** results showed that high levels of gene expression in plants lacking adequate water can be remarkably influenced by Pf1 colonization,which might be a key element for induced systemic tolerance by microbes.

Objective:To delineate the frequency of occurrence of blaCTX-m,blaTEm,and blaSHV in Enterobacteriaceae from North-Indian tertiary ***:A random collection of a subset of 45 Escherichia coli（***） and 28 Klebsiella pneumoniae（***） that was resistant to a third generation cephalosporin and obtained during 2007-2008 was selected for detailed screening for blaCTX-m,blaTEm,and blaSHV by monoplex *** isolates demonstrating the presence of blaCTX-m alleles were characterized for the specific CTX-m-genogroup by using a multiplex ***:Resistance to cefoperazone,ceftazidime,ceftriaxone,cefotaxime, cefoxitin and piperacillin was 100%each in *** isolates,whereas these resistancerates for *** isolates were 93.1%,83.8%,91.9%,93.6%,97.3%and 97.1%,respectively. Concomitant resistance to aminoglycosides,quinolones and aztreonam was also *** of any of the bla genes(blaCTX-m,blaTEm,and blaSHV) was noticed in a total of 28（38.4%） isolates of the 73 isolates *** isolates demonstrated occurrence of these genes in various ***CTX-m,blaTEm,and blaSHV were noticed in 28.8%,10.9%and 13.7%isolates, *** PCR in blaCTX-m harboring isolates demonstrated the presence of CTX-mGenogroup -1 and sequencing for the specific CTX-m-type revealed presence of CTX-m-15 type. RAPD typing showed wide diversity in ***:This is amongst the premier report describing the simultaneous occurrence of bloTEm,blaSHV,and blaampC in Indian Enterobacteriaceae and that wider dissemination of these genes,as demonstrated by diversity of isolates,raises concern and emphasizes a need for extensive search for the presence of these gene pools in Indian subcontinent.

Pictet-Spengler(P-S)反应在合成异喹啉和β-咔啉衍生物的过程中起着重要作用,它作为多种生物碱合成过程中最基础的一步反应,近年来受到人们广泛的关注。在新形成的杂环体系中,P-S反应催化醛基碳原子形成为新的手性中心。简单P-S反应得到的是外消旋混合物,但具有重要生物活性的物质通常具有立体专一性,因此寻找能催化不对称P-S反应的催化剂已成为该领域的研究热点。"Pictet-Spenglerases"是指催化P-S反应的酶的总称,它能催化产生高立体化学纯度的产物。由酶催化的P-S反应在自然界中很少,至今只有少数几种酶得到纯化和鉴定。基于此,本文从P-S反应出发,综述了近年来分离鉴定得到的Pictet-Spengler酶及其相关的生物学特性,以期为将来该类新酶的发现及系统研究提供借鉴。

Production of low cost <i>Bacillus thuringiensis</i>based-biopesticide for management of chickpea pod-borer <i>Helicoverpa armigera</i>(Huebn) in Pakistan

The biopesticide was prepared from locally available low cost ingredients: dried beef blood, molasses and mineral salts (ZnCl2, mgCl2, mnCl2, CaCl2CaCl2, and FeCl3) which were used as medium for the laboratory scale production of Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) bio-pesticide by shake flask technique. Indigenous B.t. isolate PA-Sb- 46.3 which produced two crystals—bi-pyramidal and cuboidal was found 73.6 times toxic against H. armigera than reference strain Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (HD-I-S-1980) used. medium was fermented for 72 hours at 30℃ ± 2℃ and 160 rpm. 72 h fermented medium showed 95% - 99% sprulation, with spore yield of 3.97 × 109 spores/ml, and LC50 value to 1st instar larvae of H. armigera was 0.53 μg/ml diet. Preservatives and diluents used in the biopesticide were found to be effective to store at room temperature over a period of 30 months. These observations suggested that the biopesticide produced was effective and highly economical for the industrial scale production to manage H. armigera in Pakistan.

Investigation of Subsurface Contamination due to Chromium from Tannery Effluent in Kasur District of Pakistan

The present study is conducted in the scenario of the tannery waste hazards in Kasur district of Pakistan where the tannery industry is considered as major cause of groundwater quality deterioration. Area focused in this research constitutes the surroundings of the effluent carrying drains near tannery units. This study includes soil explorations, groundwater monitoring and wastewater analysis in the research area so as to find out the contamination extent of chromium in subsurface. Initial groundwater monitoring exhibited chromium concentrations as high as 90 mg/L in the tannery area. Even groundwater sampling from monitoring wells installed in the adjacent areas of effluent carrying drains, showed concentrations up to 10.4 mg/L. Wastewater analysis of all the drains in the research area has evidenced potential risk of contaminant seepage into soil and groundwater as level of chromium in wastewater samples has reported to be immensely high and varies from 68 mg/L to 2,152 mg/L. However the 30 soil samples collected from two soil bores did not show any significant results as the maximum values obtained for hexavalent chromium for leaching and retained in soil are 0.02 mg/L and 8.1 mg/kg, respectively. These low concentrations of soil samples suggest that the soil contamination may not be a main environmental issue in the areas adjacent to the effluent carrying drains. The research concludes as possibility of direct interference of the tannery wastewater with groundwater through damaged structures and sewers.

Correlation of Serum C-Reactive Protein with Disease Severity in Tuberculosis Patients

Purpose: To study the factors influencing sputum smear conversion including Serum C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and its correlation with disease severity in tuberculosis patients. method: Levels of Serum-CRP concentrations were deter-mined in 60 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, 30 healthy volunteers and patients in follow-up after completion of antitubercular treatment (DOTS therapy). Results: Serum-CRP levels were found to be significantly higher in smear-positive group as compared with the follow-up patients and smear-negative control group. The values were 43.65 ± 23.68, 9.88 ± 5.23 and 4.04 ± 3.85 mg/L respectively (P Conclusion: Serum-CRP levels are significantly correlated with disease severity in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Thus these findings from the present study would certainly add new criteria for early diagnosis of TB, which may lead to development of new strategies to treat TB.

Stem Histopathology of Sesame Seedlings Infected with Alternaria alternata

In the present study, histopathology of three varieties of sesame TS 3, TS 5 and SG 27 infected with Alternaria alternata was carried out to understand the mechanism of fungal infection and penetration in sesame plant as well as to determine the histological manifestation in sesame cells by light microscopy. Fungus was identified in infected tissues as a dark bluish black with toluidine blue O staining. Light microscopic examination of sesame stem showed that the fungus was present in epidermis, hypodermis and cortical parenchyma tissue as the symptoms became visible by naked eye ten days after inoculation (DAI). As the disease progress, the fungus moved from cortical parenchyma to vascular bundle, xylem and phloem. Later on, it completely overlapped the vascular bundle and entered in pith. When necrotic lesion appeared, fungus was present abundantly in epidermis, hypodermis, cortical parenchyma, vascular bundles and in pith. Due to its excessive growth and complete overlapping of cells, disorganization or destruction of cells of sesame took place. It was concluded that the Alternaria alternata was not a tissue limited pathogen instead of this it spread in to all tissues of stem from epidermis to pith.

A Study on the Pulmonary manifestations of Rheumatoid Arthritis from a North Indian Town

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disease of unknown etiology characterized by articular involvement, extra-articular involvement, and the presence of serum rheumatoid factor. Pulmonary involvement in RA is a common extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that confers significant morbidity and mortality. We undertook this study to determine the prevalence and spectrum of pulmonary abnormalities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from a North Indian town. 62 patients who met the American College of Rheumatology (formerly the American Rheumatism Association) 1987 classification criteria for RA were subjected to clinical examination of chest, X-Ray-chest (CXR), pulmonary function tests (PFT) and high resonance computed tomography (HRCT). 40.3% patients had some pulmonary symptoms with exertional dyspnoea in 21%, cough with expectoration in 17.7%, fine respiratory rales in 11.3%, patients X-ray chest bilateral lower zone haziness in 16% and prominent pulmonary vasculature in 3.2%. 43% had abnormal PFT-restrictive pattern in 29%, obstructive pattern 8% and mixed pattern in 6.4%. HRCT revealed abnormal findings in 33.8% commonest being ground glass pattern in both lower lobes 19.3%, sub pleural reticulations in 9.6%, pleural thickening in 3.2% and pulmonary vascular prominence in 1.6%. To provide optimal treatment, physicians must always consider the possibility of associated pulmonary manifestations when patients with RA are evaluated.
