Double diabetes in Saudi Arabia: A new entity or an underestimated condition

AIm To determine the clinical and biological characteristics of double diabetes(DD) among young people in Saudi *** This was a retrospective descriptive chart review study including 312 young newly diagnosed diabetic patients(aged 12-20 years), whom were admitted over a five year period(January 2009 to December 2013). Family history of diabetes mellitus(Dm)(first degree), physical body mass index(BmI), acanthosis nigricans, history of auto-immune disease and laboratory information for glycosylated hemoglobin, basal C peptide level and diabetes autoantibody response(anti-GAD, anti-IA2 and anti-ICA) were collected from medical report. A mean follow-up of 3 years for these patients was *** Patients were categorized into 4 groups, based on the autoantibody response(Ab+ or Ab-) and C-peptide secretion(β+ for fasting level 0.4-2.1 ng/mL and β- if mL). Group1(type 1a): Ab+ β-(21%), group 2(type 1b): Ab- β-(9%), group 3(DD): Ab+ β+(31%)and group 4(classic type 2 Dm): Ab- β+(39%). The mean age of the DD patients in our study was 15.1 ± 6.4 years. A total of 41% of the study population presented with diabetic ketoacidosis and 61% of the study population presented with positive family history of Dm. The mean BmI was 26.8 kg/m2 with 64% of overweight or obese patients. Ninety two percent of the patients were started on insulin at the time of diagnosis. During a mean follow-up of 3 years, only 32% of the patients with DD required insulin and 78% were on metformin alone or with insulin. CONCLUSION Our findings enable us to arrive at the conclusion that almost one-third of the young Saudi diabetic patients reveal atypical forms of Dm(double diabetes) expressing features resulting from both T1D and T2D.

Atmospheric concentrations of radon（^（222）Rn） gas and its short-lived progenies^（218）Po,^（214）Pb, and^（214）Po were continuously monitored every four hours at the ground level in Jeddah city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The measurements were performed three times every week, starting from November 2014 to October 2015. A method of electrostatic precipitation of positively charged^（218）Po and ^（214）Po by a positive voltage was applied for determining^（222）Rn gas concentration. The short-lived^（222）Rn progeny concentration was determined by using a filter holder connected with the alpha-spectrometric technique. The meteorological parameters（relative air humidity, air temperature, and wind speed） were determined during the measurements of^（222）Rn and its progeny concentrations.^（222）Rn gas as well as its short-lived progeny concentration display a daily and seasonal variation with high values in the night and early morning hours as compared to low values at noon and in the afternoon. The observed monthly atmospheric concentrations showed a seasonal trend with the highest values in the autumn/winter season and the lowest values in the spring/summer season. moreover, and in parallel with alphaspectrometric measurements, a single filter-holder was used to collect air samples. The deposited activities of^（214）Pb and the long-lived^（222）Rn daughter ^（210）Pb on the filter were measured with the gamma spectrometric technique. The measured activity concentrations of^（214）Pb by both techniques were found to be relatively equal largely. The highest mean seasonally activity concentrations of ^（210）Pb were observed in the autumn/winter season while the lowest mean were observed in the spring/summer season. The mean residence time（mRT） of aerosol particles in the atmospheric air could be estimated from the activity ratios of ^（210）Pb/^（214）Pb.

The mixed first-order shear deformation plate theory（mFPT） is employed to study the bending response of simply-supported orthotropic *** present plate is subjected to a mechanical load and resting on Pasternak＇s model or Winkler＇s model of elastic foundation or without any elastic *** examples are presented to verify the accuracy of the present *** results for deflection and stresses are *** proposed mFPT is shown simplely to implement and capable of giving satisfactory results for shear deformable plates under static loads and resting on two-parameter elastic *** results presented here show that the characteristics of deflection and stresses are significantly influenced by the elastic foundation stiffness,plate aspect ratio and side-to-thickness ratio.

This work described the preparation of dysprosium oxide, Dy203, nanoparticles using the homogeneous precipitation method. Dy3＋ ions were precipitated using NaOH solution. The obtained product was filtered, dried, and then calcined for 1 h at the temperature range of 300-700 ℃ in static air. The calcination temperature of the Dy-precttrsor was chosen based on its decomposi- tion as indicated by the TGA analysis. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the calcined solids were studied by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, field emission scanning electron microscopy （FE-SEm）, transmission electron microscopy （TEm） and X-ray pho- toelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. The obtained results revealed that Dy203 with crystallites size of 11-21 nm was formed at 500 ℃. Such value increased to 25-37 nm for the sample calcined at 700 ℃.

This study focuses on the preparation of nanostructured holmium oxide via the decomposition of holmium acetate precursor utilizing the non-isothermal strategy. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was used to follow up the various thermal events involved in the decomposition process. Dehydration completes approximately at 150℃, which is followed by the decomposition of the anhydrous acetate leading to the formation of holmium oxide. Based on the TGA results the acetate precursor was heated non-isothermally at the temperature range of 150 e700℃. The obtained solids were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEm) and transmission electron microscopy(TEm). It is found that nanocrystalline Ho_2 O_3 starts to form at 500℃ and presents the only phase detected at the 500 e700℃ range. The electrical conductivity of the solids that form at the temperature range of 300 e700℃ was investigated. The obtained values were correlated with the observed structural modifications accompanying the heat treatment. The electrical conductivity of the Ho_2 O_3 samples prepared at 500, 600 and 700℃ reaches the values of 1.92 × 10^(-7), 1.61 × 10^(-7) and 8.33 × 10^(-8) Ω^(-1)cm^(-1) at a measuring temperature of 500℃, respectively. These values are potentially advantageous for high-resistivity devices.

Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis causes fragility fractures which increase the morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Our objective was to look at the hospital admissions due to fragility fractures and site of fractures. methods: This is a retrospective study of a 2-year period (2017-2018), in which we evaluated all the admissions of fragility fractures at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. A Fragility Fracture is a fracture which occurs in patients with low bone mass due to a fall from a standing height. The data were gathered from the Quadru med patient care system for patients over the age of 50 years: sex, site of fracture, previous fractures, and treatment meted out. The hospitalization rate for fragility fractures was calculated by taking into consideration of all the adult admissions to the orthopaedic department. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the Hospital and the Imam Abdul Rahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam. Results: During the study period 187 patients with fragility fractures were admitted. The mean age was 68.55 ± 12.43 years;fracture femur was the most common with 136 (72.7%), tibia 15 (8%) and spine 14 (7.5%). At the time of discharge based on the T score of spine 50 were osteopenic and 45 were osteoporotic. Overall adult admission for the study period was 1410 patients and 13.26% were patients with fragility fractures. There were 3 (1.6%) deaths within the first 30 days in the hospital. Conclusions: Fracture femur was the most common fragility fracture seen in our study. Orthopaedic surgeons should be ready to treat all fragility fractures and treat osteoporosis appropriately so that a second fracture is prevented.

The three-dimensional(3D) nano?uid ?ow among the rotating circular plates ?lled with nanoparticles and gyrotactic microorganisms is studied. A generalized form of the magnetic Reynolds number is used for the mathematical modeling of the ferro-nano?uid ?ow. The torque e?ects on the lower and upper plates are calculated.A di?erential transform scheme with the Pad′e approximation is used to solve the coupled highly nonlinear ordinary di?erential equations. The results show that the squeeze Reynolds number signi?cantly suppresses the temperature, microorganism, and nanoparticle concentration distribution, and agree well with those obtained by the numerical method.

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup H of G is called an H-subgroup in G if NG（H）∩ H^g ≤ H for all g C G. A subgroup H of G is called a weakly H-subgroup in G if there exists a normal subgroup K of G such that G = HK and H N K is an H-subgroup in G. In this paper, we investigate the structure of the finite group G under the assumption that every subgroup of G of prime order or of order 4 is a weakly H-subgroup in G. Our results improve and generalize several recent results in the literature.

Well crystalline gadolinium oxide（Gd2O3） nanostructures were grown by annealing the hydrothermally as-prepared nanostructures without using any template. microscopic studies of Gd2O3 nanostructures were recorded along the [111] direction due to the clearly resolved interplanar distance d（222）-0.31 nm of the cubic crystal structure Gd2O3. Sensing mechanism of Gd2O3 as efficient electron mediator for the detection of ethanol was explored. As-fabricated sensor demonstrated the high-sensitivity of -0.266 μAm/m/cm2 with low detection limit（-52.2 μmol/L） and correlation coefficient（r^2, 0.618）. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first report for the detection of ethanol using as-grown（at 1000 oC） Gd2O3 nanostructures by simple and reliable Ⅰ-Ⅴ technique and rapid assessment of the reaction kinetics（in the order of seconds）. The low cost of the starting reagents and the simplicity of the synthetic route made it a promising chemical sensor for the detection of various toxic analytes, which are not environmentally safe.
