Prevalence and Correlates of.Dyslipidemia among Adults in Saudi Arabia: Results f.om a National Survey

Data were collected and analyzed f.om a cross-sectional study using the World Health Organization’s STEPwise approach, to estimate the prevalence of.various types of.dyslipidemia and determine their associated f.ctors among adults in Kingdom of.Saudi Arabia. The study population included 4490 Saudi adults aged 15 years and older who were selected by a stratif.ed, multistage, cluster random sampling technique. Lipid prof.le was determined by spectrophotometrically by biochemical methods, high total cholesterol (TC) was def.ned as TC of.5.2 mmol/L or more, hypertriglyceridemia as serum triglycerides level 1.7 mmol/L or more and. low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) as serum HDL-C 0.9 mmol/L or less, LDL-C 3.35 mmol/L or more and TC/HDL ratio 5 or more. Of.the 4490 subjects (94.4 % of.total sample) included in the f.nal analysis, 51% were f.males, 23% of.study subjects were less than 25years and 11% were 55 or more years of.age. The overall prevalence of.dyslipidemia ranged f.om about 20% to 40%. The highest prevalence was f.r triglycerides where about 44% of.all subjects were af.ected. About a f.f.h of.the subjects had high level of.total cholesterol. Males had signif.cantly higher prevalence of.all types of.dyslipidemia than f.male except LDL-C and TC. Higher dyslipidemia prevalence of.total cholesterol and triglycerides were signif.cantly f.und in older subjects, illiterates and housekeepers. Lower prevalence rates f.r HDL-C was signif.cantly observed in retired and youngest subjects. There were signif.cant regional variations and signif.cantly higher prevalence of.dyslipidemia among hypertensives, diabetics, obese/overweight, smokers and physically inactive subjects. There were no signif.cant dif.erences according to income or f.uits and vegetable consumption. Logistic regression analysis revealed that obesity/overweight, gender, age, diabetes were the most important signif.cant predictors of.dyslipidemia. The f.ndings of.this study suggest that the pre

Maintenance of.Ephedra alata Seeds Viability via Storage Containers

Sequential incubation of.seed samples yielded 20 f.ngal species belonging to 13 genera. The prevalent genera were Aspergillus (A. f.avus and A. parasiticus), f.sarium (f. monilif.rme and f. oxysporum) and Penicillium (Penicillium sp.). Such seedborne f.ngi dif.er in their colonization in dif.erent parts of.seeds with most of.them are colonized in seed coat, endosperm, and embryo of.the seed. The usage of.dif.erent storage containers f.r storing seeds indicated that the cotton cloth bags were the most f.vorable ones as they maintain seed moisture content (SMC) below the critical level resulting in minimum seed deterioration compared with other seed storage containers.

Mass attenuation coef.icient(μ_m) f.r polyethylene glycol(PEG) of.dif.erent molecular weights was determined by using NaI(Tl) scintillator and Win Xcom mixture rule at gamma energies of.59.5, 302.9, 356.0, 661.7, 1173.2 and 1332.5 keV. The total atomic, molecular and electronic cross sections, half.value layer, ef.ective atomic and electron numbers, mass energy-absorption coef.icients and kerma relative to air are calculated. The energy and compositional dependence of.μ_m values, and the related radiation absorption parameters, are evaluated and discussed. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical ones, within an uncertainty of.1% in the ef.ective atomic number f.r all PEG samples at the designated energies.

Study of.phase separation in Ga25Se75-xTex chalcogenide thin f.lms

The ef.ects of.composition and thermal annealing in between glass transition and crystallization temperature on the optical and structural properties of.Ga25Se75-xTex were investigated. The glass transition and crystallization temperature of.the synthesized samples was measured by non-isothermal DSC measurements. Amorphous thin f.lms of.Ga25Se75-xTex glasses were grown onto ultra clean glass/Si waf.r (100) substrates using the vacuum evaporation technique. The ef.ect of.thermal annealing on the optical gap (Eg) f.r Ga25Se75-xTex thin f.lms in the temperature range 358-388K is studied. As-prepared and annealed thin f.lms were characterized by X-ray dif.raction, f.eld emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and optical absorption. Thermal annealing was f.und to be accompanied by structural ef.ects, which in turn, lead to changes in the optical constants. The optical absorption coef.icient (a) f.r as-deposited and thermally annealed f.lms was calculated f.om the absorbance data. f.om the knowledge of.absorption coef.icient at dif.erent wavelengths, the optical band gap (Eg) was calculated f.r all compositions of.Ga25Se75-xTex thin f.lms bef.re and af.er thermal annealing. Results indicate that allowed indirect optical transition is predominated in as-deposited and thermally annealed thin f.lms. The inf.uence of.Te incorporation and thermal annealing in Ga25Se75-xTex thin f.lms results in a gradual decrease in the indirect optical gap, this behaviorcan be explained as increased tailing. The decrease in optical band gap and an increase in absorption coef.icient and extinction coef.icient with thermal annealing can be attributed to transf.rmation f.om amorphous to crystalline phase.

A method f.r inverting the Laplace transf.rm is presented, using a f.nite series of.the classical Legendre polynomials. The method recovers a real valued f.nction f.t) in a f.nite interval of.the positive real axis when f.t) belongs to a certain class and requires the knowledge of.its Laplace transf.rm f.s) only at a f.nite number of.discrete points on the real axis s>0. The choice of.these points will be caref.lly considered so as to improve the approximation error as well as to minimize the number of.steps needed in the evaluations. The method is tested on f.w examples, with particular emphasis on the estimation of.the error bounds involved.

Compacted layers of.expansive soils are used in dif.erent engineering projects,such as subgrades,engineered clay barriers,and buf.ers f.r radioactive waste *** layers are exposed to a variety of.stresses and wetting conditions during f.eld *** between hydraulic and mechanical repeated loading provides insight understanding to the induced progressive def.rmation of.expansive *** study was conducted to investigate the hydromechanical behavior of.unsaturated compacted expansive clay under repeated loadingeunloading(RLU)*** series of.onedimensional(1D)oedometer tests were conducted under controlled matric suction up to 1500 kPa using the axis translation technique(f.edlund soil-water characteristic curve device,SWC-150).The f.rst test series was carried out at dif.erent levels of.controlled matric suction f.r non-repeated loading eunloading(NRLU)*** cycles were applied in the second test series at dif.erent repetitivestress levels and under dif.erent levels of.matric *** results indicated increasing axial wetting strainε_(a)(s),axial swell pressure ss(s),compression index C_(c)(s),and swell index C_(s)(s)with suction *** estimated loadecollapse(LC)curves obtained f.om NRLU series(LCN)and RLU series(LCR)indicated increasing yield stress sy(s)with increasing *** is attributed to the developed apparent cohesion between soil particles,which in turn rigidif.es the material *** repetitive loading induced a notable reduction of.compression index C_(c)(s)at the same level of.suction,whereas swell index C_(s)(s)seems to be independent of.repetitive ***,repetitive loading exceeding initial yield stresses results in plastic hardening and,hence,enlargement of.yield stress locus(*** curve).

The Relationship between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Resistin Levels in Saudi Diabetic Patients

Objectives: The aim of.this study was to investigate the relationship between the levels of.25-hydroxyvitamin D and the adipokine resistin in Saudi diabetic patients and those at high risk to develop atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Methodology: One hundred and sixty seven subjects were recruited f.r the cross-sectional study at King f.had Medical City, Saudi Arabia. Blood samples were analyzed f.r biochemical parameters. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and resistin levels were measured f.r all the participants. Result: f.f.y six type-1, 55 type-2 diabetic patients and 56 healthy controls were recruited. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level in the control group was 44.21 ± 41.80 μg/ml compared to 50.67 ± 35.60 μg/ml in the diabetic group (P = 0.427) with no signif.cant dif.erent between type-2 diabetes mellitus and type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.628). Resistin level in the control group was 14.00 ± 7.39μg/ml compared to 20.21 ± 16.94 μg/ml in the diabetic group (P ≤ 0.01), no signif.cant dif.erence between type-2 diabetes mellitus and type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.817). Resistin in those taking vitamin D supplementation was 21.34 ± 18.27 μg/ml;and in those not taking vitamin D supplementation, it was 17.4 ± 11.19 μg/ml;(P = 0.237). There was signif.cant negative correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and resistin in type-2 diabetes mellitus (P ≤ 0.043) and no signif.cant correlation was f.und between vitamin 25 (OH) D and resistin level in type-1 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.538). Blood urea and creatinine showed signif.cant positive correlation with vitamin 25 (OH) D in one hand and resistin level on the other hand. Discussion and Conclusions: Several in vitro and in vivo studies have conf.rmed that the vitamin 25 (OH) D have numerous important f.nctions in the body. The circulating vitamin 25 (OH) D and resistin levels were associated with general inf.ammation in renal diseases.
