Food additives, whether natural or artificial substances, are widely used around the world to improve the sensory quality of products, extend their shelf life and make them more competitive. However, the abusive and uncontrolled consumption of food additives is the cause of numerous illnesses and diseases such as poisoning, allergies, diabetes and numerous cancers. So, in addition to setting up control and regulatory bodies, it is becoming essential to keep a constant watch on the presence of food additives on the market. The aim of this study is to highlight the main categories of food additives in food products frequently sold on the Senegalese market. The methodology of the study is based on the identification of food additives from the information given on the labels of food packaging. Information was collected in markets in two (2) major regions of Senegal: Dakar and Saint-Louis. The results of our study show the presence of 153 food additives on the labels of 514 samples collected. Moreover, the frequency and diversity of additives depended on the food category. On the other hand, beyond their important technological and functional roles, some additives such as aspartame and monosodium glutamate have been implicated in pathologies, and others, such as titanium dioxide, are the subject of much controversy and even withdrawal in certain legislations for their impacts deemed potentially negative on consumer health.

Testicular cancers are tumours of the young adult (15 - 35 years), and it is a rather rare pathology in African black. However, the risk of developing these cancers becomes higher if the testicle does not descend. In our context, these undescended testicles often go unnoticed, which poses the problem of surveillance. We report a case in a patient of 24 years who consulted for pain plus hypogastric mass, in whom at the end of the clinical, paraclinical and surgical investigations we retained the diagnosis of seminoma of the right testicle. This is the first case in our daily practice. Conclusion: The rarity of tumours on the undescended testicle should not cause their diagnosis to be misunderstood because of the seriousness of cases diagnosed late.

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence, the characteristics of hypoglycaemia in the newborn admitted to emergency departments of teaching Hospital of Treichville, Abidjan and to evaluate the relevance of capillary blood glucose in this diagnosis. Patients and Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was held from 01 February to 25 June 2017 in the Pediatric Emergency Department. It involved 201 newborns under 24 hours of age who consulted in pediatric emergency for any reason. Data were collected from parent direct interviews, analysis of the follow-up record, physical examination of the newborn, results of glucose level in the capillary blood at heel and in venous blood. On dry tube and gray tube (containing sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate), the blood glucose on the latter tube constituting the reference blood glucose, with neonatal hypoglycaemia defined by a venous blood glucose less than or equal to 2.5 mmol/l (0.45 g/l). The statistical tests used were the frequency comparison, the Chi Square, the Fisher Test with a significance threshold p 0.05 or the Odds-ratio with a confidence interval of 95% and a significance threshold of 5%, but also with the correlation coefficient. Results: Newborns of less than 3 hours of life (70.6%) were the most represented with a male predominance (sex ratio = 2.9). The reasons for consultation were dominated by neurological disorders (36.5%), prematurity (31.8%), and fever (22.2%). The average time to complete the blood glucose test was less than one hour after the sampling in 6.5% of the cases. The mean blood glucose was 0.59 g/l (3.28 mmol/l) with extremes ranging from 0.15 to 1.8 g/l (0.83 mmol/l to 10 mmol/l). The prevalence of hypoglycemia by the instantaneous glycemic method was 15.9%. Acrodermatitis enteropathica is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterised by periorificial dermatitis, alopecia and diarrhoea. It is caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for a membrane protein that binds zinc. We report a case in a 7-month-old girl, admitted with altered general condition and scaly, pustular erythematous lesions, initially located in the occipital and cervical regions, and secondarily inguinal and on the knees. Management and outcome in this patient? Genetic assay was not available to confirm this rare genetic disease. A delay in establishing the diagnosis and a disastrous outcome did not save the patient despite the administration of zinc.

Studies conducted in the delta and lower valley of Senegal river have demonstrated through ethnobotanical surveys, the importance of Nymphaea lotus L. and Nymphaea micrantha Guill. et Perr in the diet and in the pharmacopoeia. The seeds are used with good appreciation by the indigenous population as a welding food. But studies addressing their biochemical and nutritional aspects are still very rare in the literature. This study was initiated in order to fill this gap and allow a better appreciation of the nutritional and energetic potentialities of these seeds. For this purpose, seeds were collected in effluent from the Senegal River, dried in the shade and put into three different batches: a batch of red seeds of N. lotus, a batch of Black seeds of N. lotus and a batch of seeds of N. micrantha. The biochemical analyses gave their moisture content (9.17% ± 0.2% to 13.36% ± 3.46%), aw (0.46% to 0.71%), protein (7.90% ± 1.25% to 8.24% ± 0.5%), lipid (2.32% ± 0.45% to 4.29% ± 1.0%), carbohydrate (74.49% ± 0.9% and 77.66% ± 1.65%), mineral matter (1.77% ± 0.06% to 2.55% ± 0.08%). All three types of seeds have high levels of potassium (481.10% ± 17.62% to 770.81% ± 42.33%), magnesium (312.71% ± 14.08% to 518.67% ± 15.23%) and calcium (188.81% ± 8.52% to 296.52% ± 16%. Their energy values (350.54 ± 15.21 kcal/100g to 375.7 ± 3.48 Kcal/100g), are closed to other cereals consumed in the human diet in Senegal. Therefore, these seeds offer the opportunity to diversify the diet in the delta and lower valley of the Senegal River.

This work proposes to compare the extraction of total polyphenols and the coloring obtained after several series of decoction at 100°C/20min, of whole or crushed leaves of Combretum micranthum. The total phenolic content of the extracts obtained after decoction was determined by Folin’s method. The color parameters were measured using a colorimeter based on the CIELAB system. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows significant differences (p 0.05) on different parameters evaluated. The Minitab 19 software was used to classify the extracts according to the color parameters (L, A, and B). The results showed that the maximum of polyphenols (21.67%) was extracted in the crushed leaves after three series of decoctions while with the whole leaves the maximum of 16.17% is obtained after six series of decoctions. The concentration of total polyphenols becomes low from four series of decoctions with 0.146 g·AG·100 g-1 MS. The red and yellow coloring drops respectively by 85 and 69% with crushed leaves and 64 and 21% with whole leaves. The conductivity and the brix of the extracts fall according to the series of decoctions. These results show that for optimal use of C. micranthum leaves in traditional medicine, crushed leaves and three series of decoctions are indicated and sufficient.

The evaluation of the extension of the atheromatous lesion is essential for the planning of the endovascular technique at the level of the femoral arterial bifurcation. Therefore, we changed the classification of Azema and applied it to a series of patients who had undergone open surgery of the femoral arterial bifurcation. This evaluation made it possible to have an idea of the distribution of atheromatous lesions in this region and to compare the efficiency of this modified classification of Azéma with others used in the literature. This modified classification of Azema is relevant and constitutes a decision-making tool for the endovascular therapeutic indications of femoral arterial bifurcation.

Bipolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate: Short-Term Outcome Evaluation in Regional Hospital in Senegal

Introduction: Transurethral resection of the prostate is still the most popular procedure that use for the surgical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction in developed countries. Bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (B-TURP) is a recent technique in our urological practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate our preliminary results on the use of a B-TURP in Kolda (Senegal) in a benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Materials and Methods: This was a 15-month, retrospective and descriptive study from June 2021 to August 31, 2022. It examined the records of patients who had BPH requiring surgical treatment and who received Bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (B-TURP) during the study period at the Kolda Regional Hospital in Senegal. We used a Karl STORZ bipolar endoscopy column with a 26 sheath and 30˚ optics. The parameters studied were the civil status of the patients, the clinical and para-clinical data as well as the operative indications. The data were entered and analyzed using Epi-info 3.***.1.1. Results: A total of 31 patients underwent bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate during the study period. The mean age of patients was 68.5 ± 12.6 years (range, 56 - 77 years). The mean total PSA was 4 ± 2.3 ng/ml (range, 0.5 - 11 ng/ml). The mean prostate size assessed by ultrasound was 54 ± 12.3 ml (range, 30 - 90 ml). The operative indication was dominated by BPH with impact on the upper urinary tract. The mean of bladder irrigation time was 21.4 ± 3.9 hours (range, 12 - 26 hours). In the immediate post-operative period, blood transfusions were performed in 2 patients (6.5%). In the medium-term follow-up, we noted one 1 (3.2%) case of urine retention requiring bladder catheterization. Conclusion: Bipolar Transurethral resection of the prostate B-TURP in saline system is efficacious and safe. Agroecosystems in the Senegalese groundnut basin experience long periods of high temperatures and drought, which disrupt the stability of soil microbial communities. This study evaluated how that stability is affected by homefields and outfields’ agricultural practices and the duration of heat stress. Specifically, we collected soils from organically farmed fields that receive continual high inputs of manure (homefields), and from fields that are rarely manured (outfields). Soil samples were submitted to artificial heat stress at 60°C for 3, 14, and 28 days, followed by 28 days of recovery at 28°C. We examined the functional stability of microbial communities by quantifying C mineralization, and characterized the stability of the communities’ taxonomic compositions via high-throughput DNA sequencing. We found that the microbial communities have a low resistance to heat stress in soils from both types of fields. However, the manuring practice does affect how the functional stability of microbial communities responds to different durations of heat stress. Although functional stability was not recovered fully in either soil, microbial community resilience seemed to be greater in homefield soils. Differences in manuring practices also affected the structural taxonomic stability of microbial communities: relative abundances of Bacilli, Chloroflexia, Actinobacteria and Sordariomycetes increased in the homefield stressed-soils, but decreased significantly in outfield soils. In contrast, relative abundances of α-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria and Eurotiomycetes increased significantly in outfield stressed-soils, while decreasing significantly in the homefield soils. Relative abundances of Bacilli changed little in outfield soils, indicating that this taxon is resistant to heat stress.
