Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors: sustainable solutions for a greener future

Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors（PBRs） has emerged as a promising and sustainable approach to address various environmental and energy challenges, offering a multitude of benefits across diverse *** developments in microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors have contributed substantially to the development and optimization of sustainable bioprocesses. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent innovations and breakthroughs in the field of microalgae cultivation, with a specific focus on their application in photobioreactors, aimed at paving the way for a greener future. This study in-depth examines the advantages of microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors, concentrating on its effectiveness in wastewater treatment, CO2bioremediation, and the production of biofuels and high-value products. The review evaluates the effects of light,solar irradiation, temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in culture media, CO2concentrations, and pH on microalgae growth performance, including specific growth and biomass productivity. The study also examines open systems like unstirred ponds, raceway ponds, and circular ponds and closed systems like horizontal tubular, vertical bubble-column, airlift, flat panel, and plastic-bag photobioreactors, comparing their pros and cons. To optimize microalgae cultivation, key factors in photobioreactor design, including photosynthetic efficiencies, light/dark（L/D） cycles, CO2concentrations, mass transfer, hydrodynamics behavior, and p H, are extensively investigated. In addition, the review outlines recent developments in large-scale photobioreactors and highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with photobioreactor scale-up and design parameter optimization, including genetic engineering and economic feasibility. Refinement and estimation of asphalt flow number using partial load history

The effect of tertiary flow length on asphalt concrete(AC) flow number(FN) has been studied in this paper. The standard FN test(AASHTO T378) designated by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials(AASHTO) is currently among the widely adopted test for assessing the rutting performance of AC mixtures. The standard adopts the Fracken model(FM) for fitting the permanent deformation curve(PDC), prior to FN estimation. The FN was observed to vary as tertiary flow progresses. The FM, along with other PDC models(MFM-1 and MFM-2) obtained by modifying the FM, was utilized to analyze and minimized this variation. Variation of FN resulted because of mathematization of the PDC data. Instead of representing the actual initiating point of permanent shear deformation of the strain data, estimated values of FN were observed to indicate the inflection points of the fitted parent curve. As per standard FN range suggested by AASHTO T378, the observed variation in FN leads to the situation, where a single asphalt mix specimen can be regarded as appropriate for two different traffic levels, depending on the tertiary flow point at which the test is terminated. Supplementary steps in the FN estimation methods were proposed for refinement of FN values. For the refinement and further standardization of FN value and FN test respectively, FN:T(flow number to test duration ratio) has been recognized as the key and most simple solution. Two potential options for employing FN:T in the estimation of FN have also been highlighted. Several important correlations have been reported herein as well. Comparatively, MFM-1 was found to be more robust in FN:T curve utilization than MFM-2 and FM.

Hospitalizations for Osteoporosis-Related Fractures: Analysis from Eastern Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis causes fragility fractures which increase the morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Our objective was to look at the hospital admissions due to fragility fractures and site of fractures. Methods: This is a retrospective study of a 2-year period (2017-2018), in which we evaluated all the admissions of fragility fractures at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. A Fragility Fracture is a fracture which occurs in patients with low bone mass due to a fall from a standing height. The data were gathered from the Quadru Med patient care system for patients over the age of 50 years: sex, site of fracture, previous fractures, and treatment meted out. The hospitalization rate for fragility fractures was calculated by taking into consideration of all the adult admissions to the orthopaedic department. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of the Hospital and the Imam abdul Rahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam. Results: During the study period 187 patients with fragility fractures were admitted. The mean age was 68.55 ± 12.43 years;fracture femur was the most common with 136 (72.7%), tibia 15 (8%) and spine 14 (7.5%). At the time of discharge based on the T score of spine 50 were osteopenic and 45 were osteoporotic. Overall adult admission for the study period was 1410 patients and 13.26% were patients with fragility fractures. There were 3 (1.6%) deaths within the first 30 days in the hospital. Conclusions: Fracture femur was the most common fragility fracture seen in our study. Orthopaedic surgeons should be ready to treat all fragility fractures and treat osteoporosis appropriately so that a second fracture is prevented.
