Maternal and obstetric risk factors for low birth weight and preterm birth in rural Gambia: a hospital-based study of 1579 deliveries

Introduction: Low birth weight and prematurity are risk factors for perinatal morbidity and mortality, which is high in sub saharan African countries. We determined the frequency of and maternal and obstetric risk factors for low birth weight and preterm birth among hospital births in rural Gambia. Method: We performed a hospital-based retrospective analysis of deliveries from July to December 2008 in two rural hospitals. Maternity records were reviewed and abstracted of the mother’s demographic and reproductive characteristics, obstetric complications and foetal outcome. The maternity records contain important information maternal health and complications during pregnancy and intrapartum period. The records also contain information about the newborn’s vital status and birth weight. To determine the association between low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB) and maternal demographic characteristics and obstetric complications we calculated odds using logistic regression. Main outcome measure(s): Low birth weight (s) and preterm birth (s). Results: Our final sample included 1244 singleton live births with complete information about all variables. The rate of LBW and PTB were 10.5% and 10.9% respectively. Ninety-four percent of LBW infants were estimated to be preterm births. The mean birth weight was 3013 g (541 g standard deviation-sD), while the mean gestational age was 37 weeks. The pattern of risk factors was similar for LBW and PTB and both were strongly associated with antepartum haemorrhage and hypertensive pregnancy disorders. Additionally, primi parity was a risk factor for both PTB and LBW. Conclusion: The percentage of low birth weight and preterm birth in rural hospitals in The Gambia is high. The most significant risk factors were those that may be detected during the antepartum period. Impact of Climatic Parameters on the Performance of solar Photovoltaic (PV) Module in Niamey

The sensitivity of mono-crystalline solar PV module towards dust accumulation, ambient temperature, relative humidity, and cloud cover is investigated from May to August 2015 for Niamey’s environment. Two solar modules with the same characteristics have been used to carry out the impacts of the dust on the solar PV module. One of the modules is being cleaned every morning and the second one was used for monitoring the effect of dust accumulation onto the surface of the unclean module for May and June. The ambient temperature around the solar PV module was recorded at the same time with the output voltage and the output current to assess the impacts of ambient temperature on the PV conversion efficiency. In addition to these field test measurements, the solar radiation data measured in National Center of solar Energy (CNEs) of Niamey were also used. Also the relative humidity for the study area data obtained NAsA power agro-climatology website was used. Results show that the dust accumulation has the greatest impact on the performance of the PV module followed by temperature, relative humidity and cloud cover. Exposing the module in 23 days has reduced the energy output by 15.29%. The power output and the conversion efficiency of the PV module have dropped by 2.6% and 0.49% respectively. The relative humidity also has reduced the energy output by 4.3 Wh/m2/day.

Gallbladder Carcinoma of the Thyroid Revealed by an Acute Festered Thyroiditis: A Literature study about a Case

The cutaneous extension of gallbladder thyroid carcinoma is uncommon and is among the aggressive forms of the disease. We are reporting the case of a woman of 54 that shows acute festered thyroiditis worsened by a necrotic ulcer wound on the skin lasting 3 weeks amid a big neglected hetero-multinodular goitre, evolving since 20 years. The anatomopathological test showed a gallbladder thyroid carcinoma of the thyroid with severe inflammation. The treatment consisted of a complete thyroidectomy with recurrent bilateral dredging. There was a favourable evolution. Gallbladder carcinoma, in its aggressive aspect, may be linked to the occurrence of acute festered thyroiditis. Therefore, the prognosis of our patient was favourable.

Acute Renal Failure in the elderly in the Nephrology Department of Aristide Le Dantec Hospital in senegal: About 45 Cases

Introduction: The incidence of acute renal failure (ARF) increases with age. In senegal, few studies have described the epidemiology of ARF in the elderly. The aim of our study is to establish the epidemiological profile of elderly patients with ARF, identify the causes of ARF in the elderly and assess treatment and prognosis. Methods: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study over a five-year period from 2011 to 2015 involving patients aged 60 and over, treated for ARI during the study period. Data entry and analysis were done on Epi info 7.3. Results: We included a total of 45 patients. The prevalence of ARF was 3.34%. The mean age was 70.31 years (60 - 83) and the sex ratio was 3.5. Phytotherapy was found in 68.9%, hypertension was found in 68.9%, and diabetes was found in 31.1%. Prostate hypertrophy was found in 53.4% of patients. Pre-renal ARF was the most common (46.6%). Most of the cases, 66.67%, were at stage 3 of KDIGO. The most common etiologies were respectively tumor (35.5%) and infection (20%). The most common complications were respectively hyperkalemia (33.3%) and hyponatremia (33.3%). Recovery was complete in 62.6% of cases, partial in 37.8% of patients and 13.3% of patients ended up on chronic hemodialysis. Mortality was 4.4%. Conclusion: Herbal medicine, hypertension and diabetes are frequently associated with ARF in the elderly. This justifies increased monitoring of the elderly subject with these conditions in order to subject him to early and appropriate care.

The thermal, rheological and morphological properties of composite biomaterials made with mixture of high density polyethylene and typha rod powder (RD) were evaluated. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the samples was studied with 25%, 35% and 45% typha stem powder concentrations. The viscoelastic properties are mainly related to the nature of the polymer and the typha stem powder. storage (G') and loss (G') moduli increased significantly, depending on the amount of powder in the molten mixture. After a viscosity increase was noticed in low frequency, it decreased in high frequencies, which demonstrates the pseudo-plasticity effect. Morphological and thermal characterization results have shown the dispersion state of the powder and its ability to modify the kinetics crystallization of biocomposites.

electrical Instability in Pentacene Transistors with Mylar and PMMA/Mylar Gate Dielectrics Transferred by Lamination Process

This study deals with electrical instability under bias stress in pentacene-based transistors with gate dielectrics deposited by a lamination process. Mylar film is laminated onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, on which aluminum (Al) gate is deposited, followed by evaporation of organic semiconductor and gold (Au) source/drain contacts in bottom gate top contact configuration (Device 1). In order to compare the influence of the semiconductor/dielectric interface, a second organic transistor (Device 2) which is different from the Device 1 by the deposition of an intermediate layer of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) onto the laminated Mylar dielectric and before evaporating pentacene layer is fabricated. The critical device parameters such as threshold voltage (Vsub>Tsub>), subthreshold slope (s), mobility (μ), onset voltage (Vsub>onsub>) and Isub>onsub>/Isub>offsub> ratio have been studied. The results showed that the recorded hysteresis depend on the pentacene morphology. Moreover, after bias stress application, the electrical parameters are highly modified for both devices according to the regimes in which the transistors are operating. In ON state regime, Device 1 showed a pronounced threshold voltage shift associated to charge trapping, while keeping the μ, Isub>offsub> current and s minimally affected. Regardless of whether Device 2 exhibited better electrical performances and stability in ON state, we observed a bias stress-induced increase of depletion current and subthreshold slope in subthreshold region, a sign of defect creation. Both devices showed onset voltage shift in opposite direction.

The rapid evolution of technology in the field of wireless telecommunications and micro components using MEMs technologies (Micro-electromechanical systems) has contributed to the expansion and rapid development of wireless sensor networks (WsN). This rapid development has contributed to the appearance of sensor and actuator networks (WsAN) or even to the Internet of Things with DL-IoT (Device Layer-Internet of Things). This rapid evolution of WsN is due to the enthusiasm generated by this last in industry and research. This new technology is used in several applications, particularly in the outdoor location of communicating nodes. The process of distance calculation between nodes (ranging) is a primordial phase for a precise location of these nodes. This paper presents the result of measurements does with three ranging protocols (TWR, TWR_skew and sDs-TWR) implemented on DecaWiNo nodes. DecaWiNo nodes use the Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) radio links, proposed by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard amendment of the year 2007, which provides a high-performance ranging by ToF (Time of Flight) [1] [2]. The results are very promising with precision errors of the order of 50 cm over 20 meters.

strong>Background:strong> Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is a surrogate marker of generalized atherosclerosis. In sub-saharan Africa, PAD remains understudied in CKD. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a non-invasive and cost-effective tool to diagnose PAD. strong>Objectives:strong> Our aim was to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors for PAD in hemodialysis patients. strong>Patients and Methods:strong> We conducted a cross-sectional study from July 1 to December 31, 2012 in the department of Nephrology of the University Hospital Aristide le Dantec of Dakar. All consenting patients, aged above 18 years, on hemodialysis for at least 6 months were included. ABI measurements were performed using a handled pulse doppler. PAD was defined as an ABI of story of surgical revascularization and/or amputation due to vascular disease. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or not of PAD. standard blood tests and anthropometrical parameters were recorded. strong>Results:strong> A total of 53 patients with a mean age of 49.15 ± 15.18 were included. The sex ratio was 0.70. Hypertension (83.01%), low HDL-cholesterol (26.41%) and cigarette smoking (20.75%) were the main cardiovascular risk factors. Prevalence of PAD was 47.16%. Among patients with PAD, 52% had no suggestive symptoms. Lower pre-dialysis (p = 0.0384) and post-dialysis (p = 0.0447) diastolic blood pressure (BP) were significantly associated with PAD. The conventional risk factors (tobacco consumption, diabetes, alcohol consumption, dyslipidemia, hypertension, age), iPTH and CRP levels were not correlated with PAD. strong>Conclusion:strong> PAD is common among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis in senegal. Early diagnosis and management of PAD should be routinely performed in CKD patients.

Design of a Rectenna in 2.45 GHz Band Frequency for Energy Harvesting

There are several sources of energy recovery in the ambient environment. The radiofrequency energy harvesting system is used to harvest the electromagnetic energy in the air by processing energy sources to charge low-power electronic devices. Rectenna termed as a rectifying antenna is a device that is used to convert electromagnetic waves in the air into direct electric current. In this work, we have designed firstly the patch antenna with a small size printed on the FR4 substrate (40 mm × 47.5span> mm × 1.6 mm) and then the rectifier circuit. This rectenna is capable of working at a frequency range of 2.45 GHz. The antenna was designed using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) 13.0 software with the result of working frequency of 2.453 GHz, S11 (Return Loss) -52 dB, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) 1.036, gain 3.48 dB and bandwidth 150 MHz. The efficiency of rectifier design on Advanced Design System (ADS) 2011 software is 54% at the input power of 0 dBm at 2.45 GHz. The resulting system is capable of producing electrical energy to power low-power electronic equipment at a DC voltage of 732 mV.span>span>
