Rescue effects of aqueous seed extracts of Foeniculum vulgare and Carum carvi against cadmium-induced hepatic, renal and gonadal damage in female albino rats

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of aqueous seed extracts of fennel"Foeniculum vulgare"(FVE) and caraway "Carum carvi"(CCE) on liver, kidney and reproductive organs in female rats against cadmium chloride(CC) intoxication.Methods: A total of 36 adult female rats were divided into six groups, six in each group.Control group(fed normal diet), CC-treated group(50 mg CC/kg diet), CCE-treated group(150 mg CCE/kg diet), CCE + CC group, FVE(150 mg/kg diet) and FVE + CC. One month later, all rats were sacrificed and all samples were collected at proestrus phase.Results: The toxic effects of CC were confirmed biochemically by significant increase of serum concentration of liver enzymes(P < 0.05), and creatinine(P < 0.001). Moreover,CC increased significantly the serum level of malondialdehyde(MDA) and decreased the total antioxidant capacity(TAC)(P < 0.001). In addition, serum concentrations of estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH)were significantly decreased(P < 0.01). Histopathologically, CC-treated group revealed marked pathological changes in renal, hepatic, ovarian and uterine tissues. All toxic findings observed in liver and kidney with CC treatment were found to be ameliorated markedly after co-treatments with FVE or CCE. Furthermore, co-treatment of FVE with CC improved significantly all studied reproductive parameters(P < 0.01).Conclusions: Both FVE and CCE could be used as efficient treatments for liver and kidney against CC intoxication. Moreover, FVE could be utilized as a potent treatment to protect and improve female fertility from cadmium intoxication.

A Novel Spectrophotometric Method for Determination of Gabapentin in Pharmaceutical Formulations Using 2,5-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde

A highly simple, rapid, sensitive and selective method is developed for spectrophotometric determination of gabapentin in pure form as well as in pharmaceutical formulations. The method is based on the formation of a yellow Schiff base derived from the condensation of gabapentin drug (1-amino methyl) cyclo hexane acetic acid and 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHBA) exhibiting a maximum absorbance at 445 nm. The composition, molar absorptivity and effect of different excipient have been determined spectrophotometrically. Under optimized experimental conditions, Beer’s law is obeyed in the concentration range 2.57 - 37.25 μg/ml. The method is validated with respect to accuracy, precision, limit of detection and limit of quantification. The Sandell sensitivity, correlation coefficient and regression equation are calculated. The equilibrium constant and free energy change using Benesi-Hildebrand plot are also determined. The Schiff base derived from condensation of gabapentin with DHBA is also synthesized and characterized. The condensation reaction mechanism has been proposed.

Exploring patterns and consequences of land consumption in a coastal city-region

Background:The rapid expansion of built-up areas and land consumption with unsustainable spatial patterns in coastal urban areas has become a global major concern due to its far-reaching consequences for human daily life,environmental sustainability,and living organisms.However,the research on this phenomenon in these areas has received less attention.To fill this gap,we conducted a study to explore the spatial patterns of land consumption at both micro-and macro-levels and to evaluate its consequences in terms of sustainable development in a coastal city-region of Mazandaran Province in northern Iran.To achieve these two goals,we combined two methods of urban land density function and landscape expansion index(LEI)to explore spatial patterns of land consumption and also evaluated the sustainability of the region with two methods of the hierarchical analytical process(AHP)and urban sustainability index(USI).Results:The spatial patterns of land consumption in the city-region of Mazandaran from 1996 to 2016 at the macro-level changed from a decentralized-sprawl to a centralized-sprawl pattern.At the micro-level,the dominant spatial pattern of land consumption in the city-region changed gradually from the outlying pattern towards the edge expansion and infilling patterns.Also,the spatial pattern of the built-up patches in the majority of the urban areas had conformity with the dominant pattern of the region.Besides,the spatial patterns of land consumption in the region were in an unsustainable state and were changing towards more unsustainability.The absence of urban containment policies and plans could lead to further destruction of the natural environment and increase its unsustainability.Conclusions:Our results indicate that the urban areas of the coastal Mazandaran have the same behavior in the spatial pattern of land consumption at the macro-and micro-levels and all are in the same direction and follow the dominant pattern of the region.

Intrusion Detection System Using Voting-Based Neural Network

Several security solutions have been proposed to detect network abnormal behavior. However, successful attacks is still a big concern in computer society. Lots of security breaches, like Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS),botnets, spam, phishing, and so on, are reported every day, while the number of attacks are still increasing. In this paper, a novel voting-based deep learning framework, called VNN, is proposed to take the advantage of any kinds of deep learning structures. Considering several models created by different aspects of data and various deep learning structures, VNN provides the ability to aggregate the best models in order to create more accurate and robust results. Therefore, VNN helps the security specialists to detect more complicated attacks. Experimental results over KDDCUP'99 and CTU-13, as two well known and more widely employed datasets in computer network area, revealed the voting procedure was highly effective to increase the system performance, where the false alarms were reduced up to 75% in comparison with the original deep learning models, including Deep Neural Network(DNN), Convolutional Neural Network(CNN), Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit(GRU).

Utilization of Small Size Bolti (<i>Talibia nilotica</i>) and Sardine (<i>Sardina pilchardus</i>) Fish in Preparing Canned Weaning Food Purees

Utilize small size of bolti and sardine fish in preparing fish based weaning foods rich in protein, essential amino acids, fat high in omega 3 fatty acids, minerals and vitamins was investigated. The proximate composition, nutritional value, physical and sensorial properties were evaluated, The results of the chemical composition showed that the moisture content of fish based weaning food purees ranged from 67.73% to 72.05%. On dry weight basis, the five prepared formulations considered rich in protein (37.39% - 44.86%), fat (26.55% - 30.43%), ash (6.53% - 12.23%) and low in carbohydrates (20.70% - 22.18%). Using fish bones with muscles in preparing weaning food puree caused a marked rise in its content of Ca, P, Fe, and Zn levels especially in purees formulated from bolti. Weaning food purees containing sardine fish rich, in fat, were higher in vitamin A and D than those formulated from bolti one. Palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), and myristic acid (C14:0) represented the major saturated fatty acids in the prepared formulations. Weaning food purees containing sardine fish had relatively higher levels of sulfur-containing amino acids and slight lower values of lysine, alanine and glycine than these including bolti fish. The In vitro protein digestibility index (IVPDI) of the different formulations was found to be 100%. The

On hydrodynamic analysis of stepped planing crafts

Using transverse steps is one of the adopted strategies to improve the hydrodynamic characteristics of planing crafts.In the present paper,hydrodynamic characteristics of stepped planing crafts are numerically investigated.For this purpose,we analyzed the effects of five different types of transverse steps on lift to drag ratio,resistance,trim angle and sinkage of high speed planing crafts.Contours of pressure distribution on the bottom of crafts,water volume fraction and free-surface are also presented at different hull velocities.Computed numerical results are properly validated against our conducted towing tank experimental tests.

Characterization of aerodynamic performance of wind-lens turbine using high-fidelity CFD simulations

Wind-lens turbines(WLTs)exhibit the prospect of a higher output power and more suitability for urban areas in comparison to bare wind turbines.The wind-lens typically comprises a diffuser shroud coupled with a flange appended to the exit periphery of the shroud.Wind-lenses can boost the velocity of the incoming wind through the turbine rotor owing to the creation of a lowpressure zone downstream the flanged diffuser.In this paper,the aerodynamic performance of the wind-lens is computationally assessed using high-fidelity transient CFD simulations for shrouds with different profiles,aiming to assess the effect of change of some design parameters such as length,area ratio and flange height of the diffuser shroud on the power augmentation.The power coefficient(Cp)is calculated by solving the URANS equations with the aid of the SST k–ωmodel.Furthermore,comparisons with experimental data for validation are accomplished to prove that the proposed methodology could be able to precisely predict the aerodynamic behavior of the windlens turbine.The results affirm that wind-lens with cycloidal profile yield an augmentation of about 58%increase in power coefficient compared to bare wind turbine of the same rotor swept-area.It is also emphasized that diffusers(cycloid type)of small length could achieve a twice increase in power coefficient while maintaining large flange heights.

Using artificial neural network to predict velocity of sound in liquid water as a function of ambient temperature, electrical and magnetic fields

One of the main thermophysical properties of liquid water is velocity of sound.However,the effect of different externalities on velocity of sound in liquid water is not well known.Therefore,in current study,by designing an artificial neural network(ANN)velocity of sound in liquid water under different externalities is predicted.Selected externalities are ambient temperature from 272.65 K to 348.43 K,different electrical fields in range of 0 V/m to 4.03E+9 V/m and magnetic fields in range of 0-10.0594 T.To prepare of reference dataset for entry to ANN,numerical and experimental data as macroscopic reference data are extracted from microscopic characteristic of water HB strength.In order to achieve an appropriate ANN,ANN architecture sensitivity analysis is conducted by using an iterative algorithm.Learning procedure in the selected feed-forward back propagation ANN is done by hyperbolic transfer functions.Also,Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is utilized for the optimization process.ANNs output showed that the maximum MSE in prediction of velocity of sound is 0.00066.Also,the minimum of correlation coefficient in prediction of velocity of sound is 0.99131.Based on the ANNs outputs,weights and bias,an equation to predict of velocity of sound in liquid water under intended externalities is proposed.Also,according to weight sensitivity analysis input of electrical fields with 63%relative importance percentage has a grater impression on the response variable of velocity of sound in liquid water.©2016 Shanghai Jiaotong University.Published by Elsevier B.V.

Radar Rainfall Estimation of a Severe Thunderstorm over Jeddah

The regular occurrence of flash floods over the region of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in the past decade has highlighted the serious need for the development of early warning systems. Radar stations have been installed in Jeddah in the last decade whose active radius covers the Middle Western area of the country. Therefore, radar information and the associated the rainfall estimates are potentially useful components of an effective early warning system. Weather radar can potentially provide high-resolution spatial and temporal rainfall estimates that bring more accuracy to flood warnings as well as having applications in areas with insufficient rainfall stations coverage. Weather radar does not measure rainfall depth directly. An empirical relationship between reflectivity (Z) and rainfall rate (R), called the Z-R relationship (Z = ARb), is generally used to assess the rainfall depth. In this study, the rainfall events during August-September 2007 were analyzed to develop a Z-R relationship using the Spatial Probability Technique (SPT). This technique is based on a basic GIS function and the probability matching method. Using this technique, the Z-R pairs can be analyzed for both linear and empirical power relationships. It is found that the empirical power function is more appropriate to describe Z-R relationship than a linear function for the studied area. The method is applied with some success to the flooding event of November 25, 2009. However, the investigation of the Z-R relationship is only one step in the development of a warning system;further study of other parameters relevant to rainfall and flash flood occurrence is needed.

Umbilical displacement: a mini review

Background:Umbilical displacement is a known disorder in folk medicine of different cultures.The various causes,clinical signs and symptoms are attributed to this disorder and different diagnostic and therapeutic methods are mentioned.Methods:To follow the aim of the study,Persian medicine literature,Google Scholar,Google,PubMed,Scopus and Web of Science were searched with no limit of the publication date and the article type(original papers and literature reviews).The searched terms were Navel,Umbilicus and other synonyms in Persian,Turkish,Russian,German,Chinese and Indian language,Dislocation,Sliding,Displacement,Deviation,Falling,Ptosis,Folk medicine and combination of these words.We also corresponded with several experts in traditional medicine via LinkedIn.All available descriptive evidence related to umbilical displacement was retrieved,and the contents were presented as categories including the disorder name,attributed signs and symptoms,and the diagnostic and therapeutic methods.Results:This disorder is called“Taharok-e-Sorre”in Persian medicine,“Nawikkatin”in Erbil(Iraq),“Dharan or Nabhi Sarakna”in Hindi,“Göbek düşmesi”in Turkish,Bēn tún in Chinese and“Cirro”in the people of Mayan community and Spanish,and“смещенпупок”in the folk medicine of the Kurgan Bashqir.Hard work,pregnancy,childbirth,fear,lifting heavy objects,rapid and sudden movements,trauma or fall and slipping of the foot are said to be causes of umbilical displacement.Umbilical displacement is associated with several symptoms such as diarrhea,constipation,abdominal pain,anorexia,anxiety,and depression.Conclusion:In this mini-review,umbilical displacement was expressed from the viewpoint of different cultures.New cases of umbilical displacement has been reported in new articles,and the pathology of umbilical displacement has been explained from the perspective of Persian medicine.
