Intracellular pH plays a significant role in various biological processes, including cell proliferation,apoptosis, metabolism, enzyme activity and homeostasis. In this work, a novel design strategy for the preparation of pH responsive carbon dots(CDs-pH) for ratiometric intracellular imaging was reported. By using SciFinder database, fluorescent CDs-pH with the required p Kavalue of 6.84 were rationally designed, which is vital important for precise sensing of intracellular pH. As a result, the synthesized CDspH demonstrated robust ability to test pH fluctuations within the physiological range of 5.4-7.4. The CDspH was further utilized for fluorescent ratiometric imaging of pH in living HeLa cells, effectively avoided the influence of autofluorescence from native cellular species. moreover, real-time monitoring of intracellular pH fluctuation under heat shock was successfully realized. This SciFinder-guided design strategy is simple and flexible, which has a great potential to be used for the development of other types of CDs for various applications.

many views, paradigms and concepts have been advocated in recent decades on soil fertility and soil conservation across the globe in order to provide sustainable solutions to the rising food and nutrition insecurity while preserving the natural resource base. meanwhile, food and nutrition security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is mainly achieved through smallholder farming systems that are characterized by poor and declining soil fertility, which often leads to low crop yields and low income. Hence, a field trial was established to evaluate the impact of integrated soil fertility management (ISFm) practices on tomato yield and the farm-scale income in smallholder farming systems. The ISFm trial comprised a control with no input, mineral fertilizer, and organic treatments comprising sole mucuna and Tithonia biomasses as well as their combination (mucuna + Tithonia). Generally, tomato performance was better with organic plant biomass amendments, with significantly higher (P mucuna + Tithonia and sole Tithonia, followed by sole mucuna and mineral fertilizer compared to the control. meanwhile in comparison to the control, mucuna + Tithonia and sole Tithonia recorded 3.5 and 3.4 t ha-1 more yield, respectively, which was about twice the additional yield for sole mucuna and mineral fertilizer with 1.8 and 1.5 t ha-1, respectively (Tukey’s HSD, P mucuna + Tithonia and sole Tithonia, followed by sole mucuna and mineral fertilizer, as compared to the control (Tukey’s HSD, P P P mucuna + Tithonia biomass materials or their sole applications as basal mulch to improve tomato production. Thus, these organic amendments could be an alternative and sustainable integrated soil fertility management strategy to boost tomato production and farm-scale income without jeopardizing the sustainability of the environment. Background: UKPDS suggested relentless deterioration of β cell function as a part of natural course of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the course was apparently not universal since many patients maintained glycemic goal (HbA1c β cell failure occurred around the same time as the time of onset of microvascular complications. Finally, the exact mechanism of progressive β cell failure remains to be defined. It is plausible that β cell failure may be due to fibrosis of pancreatic islets secondary to microangiopathy since no organ or tissue is exempt from this complication. Objective: To assess epidemiologic correlation between presence of b cell failure and microvascular complications by determining the prevalence of β cell failure in subjects with type 2 diabetes with increasing number of known microvascular complications. methods: 650 Subjects with ages 40-75 years and duration of Dm 4-23 years were divided into 4 groups according to number of microvascular complications, e.g. retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. β cell failure (β -?ve ) is defined as HbA1c > 7.0% with any therapy or HbA1c β cell function is deemed “preserved” (β + ve) with HbA1c b cell failure progressively rose with increasing number of microvascular complications from 0 to 2 with no further significant rise with 3 complications whereas subjects with preserved β cell function declined with increasing number of microvascular complications (p β cell failure (p β cell failure/β cell preserved with increasing number of microvascular complications as well as the greater duration of Diabetes. However, a significantly (p β cell failure persisted for rising number of microvascular complications even after eliminating the influence of age and duration of diabetes. Conclusion: β cell failure may be a manifestation of microvascular pancreatic isletopathy similar to other microvascular complications.

The post-embryonic growth of the Arabidopsis thaliana root system can be modified by different types of stress,such as sublethal concentrations of metals,which may induce the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS).In this study,the effects of different concentrations of potassium chromate(K_(2)CrO_(4))on the distribution and relative quantity of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))were determined in primary and adventitious roots in *** HyPer line *** line has a biosensor that specifically reports H_(2)O_(2) levels within tissues as *** root growth was inhibited at 100μm Cr(VI);in contrast,adventitious root formation was induced over the main root growth *** structures proliferated from 100-160μm Cr(VI),and much higher concentrations(180-200μm)of K_(2)CrO_(4) were required to affect their *** H_(2)O_(2) distributions were observed in the columella and lateral root cap of primary roots of plants grown in medium lacking dichromate,but following the development of toxicity symptoms,H_(2)O_(2) changed its distribution to the meristem and differentiation ***,adventitious roots had comparable H_(2)O_(2) distribution patterns in untreated plants and those exposed to Cr(VI)***,differential H_(2)O_(2) distribution correlates with the resistance of adventitious roots,but not primary roots,to dichromate and underlies cell reorganization at the apex to support growth.

Oxygen vacancies(Vo)in electrocatalysts are closely correlated with the hydrogen evo-lution reaction(HER)*** role of vacancy defects and the effect of their concentration,how-ever,yet remains ***,Bi2O3,an unfavorable electrocata-lyst for the HER due to a less than ideal hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy(ΔGH*),is utilized as a perfect model to explore the func-tion of Vo on HER *** a facile plasma irradia-tion strategy,Bi2O3 nanosheets with different Vo concentrations are fabricated to evaluate the influence of defects on the HER ***,while the generated oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhanced HER performance,higher Vo concentrations beyond a saturation value result in a significant drop in HER *** tunning the Vo concentration in the Bi_(2)O_(3)nanosheets via adjusting the treatment time,the Bi2O3 catalyst with an optimized oxygen vacancy concentration and detectable charge carrier concentration of 1.52×10^(24)cm^(−3)demonstrates enhanced HER performance with an overpotential of 174.2 mV to reach 10 mA cm^(−2),a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec−1,and an exchange current density of 316 mA cm−2 in an alkaline solution,which approaches the top-tier activity among Bi-based HER ***-functional theory calculations confirm the preferred adsorption of H*onto Bi2O3 as a function of oxygen chemical potential(ΔμO)and oxygen partial potential(PO2)and reveal that high Vo concentrations result in excessive stability of adsorbed hydrogen and hence the inferior HER *** study reveals the oxygen vacancy concentration-HER catalytic activity relationship and provides insights into activating catalytically inert materials into highly efficient electrocatalysts.

AIm:To compare short term outcomes of elective laparoscopic and open right hemicolectomy(RH) in an elderly ***:All patients over the age of 70 undergoing elective RH at Ninewells Hospital and Perth Royal Infirmary between January 2006 and may 2011 were included in our *** details,hospital length of stay,morbidity and mortality was collected by way of proforma from a dedicated prospective *** extracorporeal anastomosis was performed routinely in the laparoscopic *** primary endpoints for analysis were morbidity and *** secondary endpoints were operative duration,length of hospital stay and discharge ***:Two hundred and six patients were included in our *** hundred and twenty-five patients underwent an open resection and 81 patients had a laparoscopic *** mean operating time was significantly longer in the laparoscopic group(139 ± 36 min vs 197 ± 53 min,P = 0.001).The mean length of hospital stay was similar in both groups(11.2 ± 7.8 d vs 9.6 ± 10.7 d,P = 0.28).The incidence of postoperative morbidities was 27% in the open group and 38% in the laparoscopic group(P = 0.12).Overall inhospital mortality was 0.8% in open procedures vs 1% in ***:Laparoscopic RH was associated with a significantly longer operative time compared to open *** our study,laparoscopic RH was not associated with reduced post-operative morbidity or significantly shorter length of hospital stay.

Crustal Structure of the Salton Trough: Incorporation of Receiver Function, Gravity and magnetic Data

The Salton Trough of southwestern California is inferred to be an incipient ocean basin, and is a polyphase basin with significant extension in addition to dextral shear. To further explore the origin and evolution of this basin, we have incorporated receiver function, gravity, and aeromagnetic data to construct new subsurface crustal scale models. Receiver function analysis suggests the moho is 20 km deep to the southwest of the Salton Sea and deepens to 32 km in the region east of the Salton Trough and dome in shape. Crustal modeling shows that the density of the lower crust is 2950 kg/m3, which is an indication for gabbroic com- position, while the density of the upper crust varies from 2500 kg/m3 to 2600 kg/m3 and the depth of sedi- mentary and meta-sedimentary rocks appears to be 8 - 10 km. most magnetic anomalies show shallow relief and are low amplitude with some exceptions in the marginal areas, suggesting the absence of shallow buried mafic intrusions and deep basement. Our models show a magmatic body to the southwest of the Salton Sea at depth of about 18 km and extend in SW-NE direction for about 90 km, We expect this magmatic body (mix- ture of lower crust and upper mantle material) is responsible for crustal thinning, stretching and rifting, ac- cording to the crustal models this body doesn’t exist in the north region of Salton Trough, thus, no further propagate of the rift is expected in the north.
