Character Association Studies in Groundnut (<i>Arachis hypogaea</i>L.)

The aim of this study was to eva.uate the degree of relationship and association amongst morphological characters of groundnut as an important food crop in Nigeria. 118 cultivars were planted in a completely randomized design structure. Characterization was based on qualitative and quantitative eva.uations of 62 characters. Data were analysed on the SPSS software (20.0 versions). Correlation tools were applied using Spearman, Kendall and Pearson methods. Level of relationship was determined based on the strength of coefficients R. Dependence among traits was tested using the Chi square. Multiple regression analysis was carried out in a predictive model. As a result, many of the traits are very weakly correlated. Day to emergence has no effect on Day to 50% flowering (R = 0.237, p umber of flower (R = 0.221, p o first flowering weakly correlates with ma.urity time of the plant (R = 0.39, p ut no effect on the yield. Also, number of flower correlates moderately with number of pods (R = 0.535, p o moderately affects leaflet sizes (R = 0.354, p ow R2 of 13%. Plant biomass moderately affects number of pod (R = 0.494, p od length (R = 0.395, p od width (R = 0.473, p umber of seed (R = 0.468, p ost of the high positive correlations recorded (R > 0.6, p observed amongst pod and seed parameters. Pod sizes significantly affect the number of seeds present (R = 0.551, p 2 of 30%. Qualitative traits have no effect on each other as all coefficients are very low. Pod constriction and sizes have no relationship (R = -0.029). Tolerance to diseases is not affected by any qualitative trait. Also, no trait determines seed colour. on the Role of Electrodes in Introducing Airflow Distortion in Residential oil Burners

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of airflow through a retention head residential oil burner were carried out to study the velocity field near and around the fuel spray. The simulations revealed (as expected, based on some previous experimental mea.urements) the velocity flow field to be far from axisymmetric. Moreover, the center of the swirling airflow was found to be at some radial distance away from the physical centerline of the flame tube. Since it was suspected that the two electrodes just upstream of the retention ring of the burner might be responsible for this flow distortion, additional CFD simulations were then carried out for the cases of no electrodes and 4-electrodes. The results clearly show that all flow distortions (velocity deviations from axisymmetric va.ue) vanish when no electrodes are present and that the flow distortions are reduced by a factor of 2 when two additional dummy electrodes (for a total of 4 electrodes) are included in the burner design. Furthermore, for the 4-electrode case, the eccentricity of the swirling airflow is reduced by almost a factor of 3 as compared to the base design case of 2-electrodes.

Informed Consent under the Ghana Health Service Patients Charter: Practice and Awareness

Background: Every human being of a.ult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his/her own body. Patient autonomy and the practice of informed patient consent are now pivotal in medical practice. Aim: To assess patient’s knowledge of Patients’ Rights Charter and whether patients receive adequate information to enable them make an informed consent to a particular treatment. Methodology: Patients who were undergoing elective surgery from selected surgical departments of Komfo Anokye teaching hospital in Kumasi were randomly selected and assisted to answer structured questionnaire without the knowledge of their doctors. The study period was in June to December (2014). Descriptive analysis was done using SPSS (II) of the results. Results: 84.7% (144) had no idea about the Patients’ Rights Charter of the Ghana Health Service. 75% (128) did not know or had not heard of informed patient consent. of those who knew of the charter, 85% (37) had ever stayed in a developed country. 60% (102) did not know of their diagnosis. 79% (134) said the doctor only asked them to either sign or thumb print the consent document without giving them treatment options or possible complications. Conclusion: Most of respondents undergoing various surgical procedures at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital were not aware of the existence of the Patients’ Rights Charter of the Ghana Health Service. Again, practitioners did not provide sufficient information to patients for them to make an informed decision about their health.

Automatic segmentation of early esopha.us cancer(EEC)in gastrointestinal endoscopy(GIE)images is a critical and challenging task in clinical settings,which relies primarily on labor-intensive and time-consuming *** has often been diagnosed at the late stage since early signs of cancer are not obvious,resulting in low survival *** work proposes a deep learning approach based on the u-Net++method to segment EEC in GIE images.A total of 2690 GIE images collected from 617 patients at the Digestive Endoscopy Center,West China Hospital of Sichuan university,China,have been *** experimental result shows that our proposed method achieved promising ***,the comparison has been made between the proposed and other u-Net-related methods using the same *** mean and standard deviation(SD)of the dice similarity coefficient(DSC),intersection over union(Iou),precision(Pre),and recall(Rec)achieved by the proposed framework were DSC(%)=94.62±0.02,Iou(%)=90.99±0.04,Pre(%)=94.61±0.04,and Rec(%)=95.00±0.02,respectively,outperforming the *** proposed method has the potential to be applied in EEC automatic diagnoses.
