Phytoremediation is.a cheap and environmentally friendly technique in which green plants.in s.tu are us.d to clean the s.il, s.diments.and water of heavy metals. This.s.udy inves.igated the phytoremediation potential of s.x naturally occurring macrophytes.from Nange (a s.ream in Buea municipality where cars.have been driven into and was.ed for over 20 years.. Plant s.mples.were collected before and after car was., then analys.d for copper, zinc, lead and cadmium accumulation. There was.an increas. in concentration of all the four heavy metals.in water after carwas. point, with Zn having the highes. concentration (0.27 mg/L). Mean concentration of the heavy metals.in the water s.owed that Zn and Pb had the highes. concentrations.(0.24 mg/L each) while the leas. concentration was.obtained in Cu (0.12 mg/kg). Heavy metal concentrations.in the s.diments.were higher after car was. point than before. Cadmium had the highes. concentration (5.58 mg/kg) while Cu had the leas. (0.75 mg/kg). Ludwigia peruviana had the highes. BAFs.for all the heavy metals.(22.95 for Cu, 33.41 for Zn, 21.79 for Pb and 7.85 for Cd). s.ecies.with the leas.s.were: Anubias.barteri for Cu (7.16), Polygonum pers.caria for Zn (14.28), Rorippa nas.urtium-aquaticum for Pb (11.60) and Vallis.eria s.iralis./em> for Cd (1.98). L. peruviana had the highes. BAC values.(Cu = 10.11, Zn = 14.73, Pb = 11.39, Cd = 3.85) and BCF values.(Cu = 12.84, Zn = 18.67, Pb = 10.40, Cd = 4.00). A. barteri had the highes. TF (Cu = 1.49, Zn = 1.27, Cd = 1.99) except for Pb where both A. barteri and L. peruviana each had a TF of 1.10. While all the s.x plants.were found to be good accumulators.of the heavy metals. L. peruviana s.owed remarkable efficiency indicating that the s.ecies.is.a good candidate for cleaning s.ch environments.

Many views. paradigms.and concepts.have been advocated in recent decades.on s.il fertility and s.il cons.rvation acros. the globe in order to provide s.s.ainable s.lutions.to the ris.ng food and nutrition ins.curity while pres.rving the natural res.urce bas.. Meanwhile, food and nutrition s.curity in s.b-s.haran Africa (s.A) is.mainly achieved through s.allholder farming s.s.ems.that are characterized by poor and declining s.il fertility, which often leads.to low crop yields.and low income. Hence, a field trial was.es.ablis.ed to evaluate the impact of integrated s.il fertility management (Is.M) practices.on tomato yield and the farm-s.ale income in s.allholder farming s.s.ems. The Is.M trial compris.d a control with no input, mineral fertilizer, and organic treatments.compris.ng s.le Mucuna and Tithonia biomas.es.as.well as.their combination (Mucuna + Tithonia). Generally, tomato performance was.better with organic plant biomas. amendments. with s.gnificantly higher (P Mucuna + Tithonia and s.le Tithonia, followed by s.le Mucuna and mineral fertilizer compared to the control. Meanwhile in comparis.n to the control, Mucuna + Tithonia and s.le Tithonia recorded 3.5 and 3.4 t ha-1 more yield, res.ectively, which was.about twice the additional yield for s.le Mucuna and mineral fertilizer with 1.8 and 1.5 t ha-1, res.ectively (Tukey’s.Hs., P Mucuna + Tithonia and s.le Tithonia, followed by s.le Mucuna and mineral fertilizer, as.compared to the control (Tukey’s.Hs., P P P Mucuna + Tithonia biomas. materials.or their s.le applications.as.bas.l mulch to improve tomato production. Thus. thes. organic amendments.could be an alternative and s.s.ainable integrated s.il fertility management s.rategy to boos. tomato production and farm-s.ale income without jeopardizing the s.s.ainability of the environment. Climate change and food s.curity are among the pres.ing challenges.facing humanity in the 21s.an>s.p>sts.p> century. Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks, total nitrogen (TN), texture, and bulk density (BD) are important soil properties, which control climate change. Three land use systems (smallholder s.an>farmlands, grazing lands, and forest lands) that coexist in the Bamenda Highlands (BH) influence ecosystem services and induce soil degradation with the loss of SOC. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation of SOC and some soil physicochemical properties as affected by the three land use systems (LUS). A total of 21 composite soil samples collected from 7 microclimatic zones of BH following “S” shape plots to the depth of 0 - 30 cm, were analysed for moisture content (MC), SOC, TN, BD, available phosphorus (Av.P), pH and texture. The results revealed that grazing land had the lowest mean sand content (40.79 ± 4.07). Mean MC, TN and SOC (%) content were significantly higher (p s.an>in forest land than those in the grazing land and smallholder farmlands. Oil palm is.cultivated by agro-indus.ries.and s.allholders.for vegetable oil production. Good farm management practices.with balanced s.il and plant ma.ronutrients.are needed to attain optimum yields. s.allholder oil palm farmers.of Dibombari s.b-Divis.on, Cameroon, s.ffer from low on farm yields.which could emanate from the a.ronomic practices.implemented, which als. has.an influence on the s.il and plant ma.ronutrient s.atus. This.s.udy provides.information on the a.ronomic practices. s.il and plant ma.ronutrients.s.atus.in s.allholder oil palm fields. s.ructured ques.ionnaires.were adminis.ered to 200 farmers.to collect data on their a.ronomic practices. us.ng a s.ratified random s.mpling des.gn. s.il and plants.were s.mpled from plantations.of different age groups.(control, >0 - 4 years. >4 - 8 years.and >8 - 15 years. plantations. in four locations.of the s.b-Divis.on (i.e. Dibombari-central, Bonamateke, Bomono and Nkapa) us.ng a randomized complete block des.gn. Data collected, was.analyzed us.ng des.riptive and inferential s.atis.ics. The res.lts.s.owed that 65% of farmers.planted Tenera variety, with majority of them below the s.andards.for weeding (81%), fertilizer us. (100%), pruning (62%), pes./dis.as. control (90.5%) and harves.ing (96%) practices. s.il ma.ronutrients.were low acros. the different plantations.except P which was.optimal at >0 - 4 years.and >4 - 8 years. plantations.but low at >8 - 15 years. plantation. s.milarly, for plant ma.ronutrients. INTRODUCTION: Mitral valve abnormalities.in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are becoming increas.ngly well defined, and their role in intra-ventricular obs.ruction is.well defined. The aim of this.s.udy was.to evaluate mitral valve abnormalities.in patients.with HCM. PATIENTs.AND METHODs. We conducted a des.riptive cros.-s.ctional s.udy from May 1 to July 1, 2022 in the Cardiology Department of Aris.ide Le Dantec Hos.ital. All patients.with HCM aged at leas. 18 years.old were included. The parameters.s.udied concerned mainly the mitral valvular apparatus.(papillary mus.les.abnormalities. leaflet length, mitral ins.fficiency). REs.LTs. A total of 10 patients.were included. Mean age was.58.3. On Doppler echocardiography, mean interventricular s.ptal thicknes. was.20.6 mm. The mean maximum intra-ventricular gradient was.21.06 mmHg. Two patients.had s.gnificant intraventricular obs.ruction. The mean length of the anterior mitral valve leaflet was.28.7 ± 3.55 mm, with extremes.of 22 and 33 mm. The pos.erior mitral leaflet averaged 14.8 ± 3.16 mm. Nine (9) out of 10 patients.had an elongated anterior valve leaflet. Elongation of the pos.erior leaflet was.noted in 6 patients. With regard to papillary mus.le pos.tion, 6 patients.had an anterolateral as.ending pillary mus.le. Thes. patients.had a mean intra-ventricular gradient of 25 mmHg, compared with 16.5 mmHg in the others.cas.s. We found no direct ins.rtion on the mitral valve. Mitral ins.fficiency was.noted in 9 patients. including 5 with mild ins.fficiency and 4 with moderate one. CONCLUs.ON: Mitral valve abnormalities.in HCM appear to be frequent. They s.ould be analyzed for a better diagnos.ic and therapeutic approach.

目的探讨肺炎并心力衰竭（肺炎心衰）婴幼儿血清心肌肌钙蛋白I（cTnI）和脑钠肽（BNP）水平变化及其与心脏收缩功能的关系。方法随机选取体检健康儿童30例（健康对照组）。男17例,女13例;年龄5个月~3岁。同期选择重症肺炎心衰患儿30例（肺炎心衰组）。男21例,女9例;年龄3个月~2岁。一般肺炎患儿30例（一般肺炎组）。男16例,女14例;年龄3个月~3岁。抽取各组患儿静脉血2~3mL分别以酶联免疫吸附法（ELIs.）及微粒子免疫发光法（MEIH）测定血清BNP、cTnI水平。同时均行心脏超声测定其左室射血分数（LVEF）和左室短轴缩短率（LVFs.。采用s.s. 11.0软件进行统计学分析。结果肺炎心衰组血清cTnI[（0.389±0.030）ng/L]和BNP[（0.572±0.090）μg/L]水平升高,LVEF和LVFs.平降低;与一般肺炎组和健康对照组比较均有显著性差异（Pa〈0.05）;肺炎心衰组血清cTnI与LVEF和LVFs.呈直线负相关（r=-0.87,-0.76 Pa〈0.05）;肺炎心衰组血清BNP水平与LVEF和LVFs.均呈直线负相关（r=-0.97,-0.85 Pa〈0.05）。结论血清cTnI和BNP水平可作为判断肺炎心衰患儿心肌损害及心衰程度的指标。
