New insights into the in-process densification mechanism of cold spray Al coatings: Low deposition efficiency induced densification

This work details new insights into the in-process densification mechanism of cold spray Al coatings. The results show a trend counter to common observations: coating plastic deformation levels and coating density decreases with an increase in particle impact velocity. A lower particle impact velocity and the consequent lower deposition efficiency(DE) results in greater tamping energy per unit volume of deposit,which is the primary reason for the observed trend. This is the first time that DE has been shown to have a non-linear impact on the density of a cold spray coating, with particle in-process tamping being the primary mechanism for coating densification.

Inspired by recent breakthroughs with topological quantum materials,which pave the way to novel,high-efficiency,low-energy magnetoelectric devices[1-3]and fault-tolerant quantum information processing[4],inter alia,topological quantum walks have emerged as an exciting topic in its own right,especially due to the theoretical and experimental simplifications this approach offers[5-14].Motivated by impressive progress in topological quantum walks,we provide a perspective on theoretical studies and experimental investigations of topological quantum walks focusing on current explorations of topological properties arising for single-walker quantum walks.

Despite its role in disease there is still no definitive method to assess oesophago-gastric junction competence （OGJ）. Traditionally the OGJ has been assessed using manometry with lower oesophageal sphincter pressure as the indicator. More recently this has been shown not to be a very reliable marker of sphincter function and competence against reflux. Disorders such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and to a lesser extend achalasia still effects a significant number of patients. This review looks at using a new technique known as impedance planimetry to profile the geometry and pressure in the OGJ during distension of a bag. The data gathered can be reconstructed into a dynamic representation of OGJ action. This has been shown to provide a useful representation of the OGJ and to show changes to the competence of the OGJ in terms of compliance and distensibility as a result of endoluminal therapy.

Topological edge states arise in non-Hermitian parity-time(PT)-symmetric systems, and manifest themselves as bright or dark edge states, depending on the imaginary components of their eigenenergies. As the spatial probabilities of dark edge states are suppressed during the non-unitary dynamics, it is a challenge to observe them experimentally. Here we report the experimental detection of dark edge states in photonic quantum walks with spontaneously broken PT symmetry, thus providing a complete description of the topological phenomena therein. We experimentally confirm that the global Berry phase in PT-symmetric quantum-walk dynamics unambiguously defines topological invariants of the system in both the PT-symmetry-unbroken and-broken regimes. Our results establish a unified framework for characterizing topology in PT-symmetric quantum-walk dynamics, and provide a useful method to observe topological phenomena in PT-symmetric non-Hermitian systems in general.

Glycaemic index(GI)testing provides a useful point of comparison between carbohydrate *** this comparison to be meaningful,the methods used to determine GI values need to be rigorous and consistent between testing *** requirement has led to increasing standardization of the GI methodology,with an international standard developed in joint consultation with FAO/WHO(ISO 26642:2010)currently the most up to date *** purpose of this review is to compare the international standard to methods of published studies claiming to have performed a GI *** analysis revealed that the international standard permits a wide range of choices for researchers when designing a GI testing plan,rather than a single standardized *** has also been revealed that the literature contains significant variation,both between studies and from the international standard for critical aspects of GI testing *** primary areas of variation include;what glucose specification is used,which reference food is used,how much reference food is given,what drink is given during testing,the blood sampling site chosen and what assay and equipment is used to measure blood glucose *** each of these aspects we have explored some of the methodological and physiological implications of these *** insights suggest that whilst the international standard has assisted with framing the general parameters of GI testing,further standardization to testing procedures is still required to ensure the continued relevance of the GI to clinical nutrition.

Multiple studies have demonstrated alterations in the intestinal microbial community (termed the microbiome) in Crohn’s disease (CD) and several lines of evidence suggest these changes may have a significant role in disease pathogenesis. In active and quiescent disease, both the faecal and mucosa-associated microbiome are discordant with matched controls with reduced biodiversity, changes in dominant organisms and increased temporal variation described. Mucosa-associated adherent, invasive Escherichia coli (E. coli) (AIEC), pro-inflammatory and resistant to killing by mucosal macrophages, appear to be particularly important. AIEC possess several virulence factors which may confer pathogenic potential in CD. Type-1 pili (FimH) allow adherence to intestinal cells via cell-surface carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules and possession of long polar fimbrae promotes translocation across the intestinal mucosa via microfold (M)-cells of the follicle-associated epithelium. Resistance to stress genes (htrA, dsbA and hfq) and tolerance of an acidic pH may contribute to survival within the phagolysosomal environment. Here we review the current understanding of the role of mucosa-associated E. coli in Crohn’s pathogenesis, the role of the innate immune system, factors which may contribute to prolonged bacterial survival and therapeutic strategies to target intracellular E. coli.

AIM To determine the uptake of noninvasive multitarget stool DNA (mt-s DNA) in a cohort of colorectal cancer(CRC) screening non-compliant average-risk Medicare *** This cross sectional primary care office-based study examined mt-s DNA uptake in routine clinical practice among 393 colorectal cancer screening non-compliant Medicare patients ages 50-85 ordered by 77 physicians in a multispecialty group practice (USMD Physician Services, Dallas, TX) from October, 2014-September, 2015. Investigators performed a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant retrospective review of electronic health records to identify mt-s DNA use in patients who were either > 10 years since last colonoscopy and/or > 1 year since last fecal occult blood test. Test positive patients were advised to get diagnostic colonoscopy and thereafter patients were characterized by the most clinically significant lesion documented on histopathology of biopsies or excisional tissue. Descriptive statistics were employed. Key outcome measures included mt-s DNA compliance and diagnostic colonoscopy compliance on positive *** Over 12 mo, 77 providers ordered 393 mt-sD NA studies with 347 completed (88.3% compliance). Patient mean age was 69.8 (50-85) and patients were 64% female. Mt-sD NA was negative in 85.3%(296/347) and positive in 14.7%(51/347). Follow-up colonoscopy was performed in 49 positive patients (96.1% colonoscopy compliance) with two patients lost to follow up. Index findings included: colon cancer(4/49, 8.2%), advanced adenomas (21/49, 42.9%), non-advanced adenomas(15/49, 30.6%), and negative results (9/49, 18.4%). The positive predictive value for advanced colorectal lesions was 51.0% and for any colorectal neoplasia was 81.6%.
