Prevalence and clinical features of colonic diverticulosis in a Middle Eastern population

AIM: To determine the prevalence, location, associations and clinical features of colonic-diverticulosis and its role as a cause of lower-gastroenterology-bleeding. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 3649 consecutive patients who under-went a colonoscopy for all indications between 2007 and 2011 at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The demographic data were collected retrospectively through the hospital's information system, electronic file system, endoscopic e-reports, and manual review of the files by two research assistants. The demographic information included the age, sex, comorbidities and indication for the colonoscopy. The association among colonic polyps, comorbidities and diverticular disease was also ***: A total of 270 patients out of 3649 were diagnosed with colonic diverticulosis, with a prevalence of 7.4%. The mean age was 60.82 years ± 0.833, (range 12-110). Females comprised 38.89% (95%CI: 33-44.7) of the study population. The major symp-toms were rectal bleeding in 33.6%, abdominal pain in 19.3%, constipation in 12.8% and anemia in 6%. Diverticula were predominantly left-sided (sigmoid and descending colon) in 62%, right-sided in 13% and in multiple locations in 25%. There was an association between the presence of diverticulosis and adenomatous polyps (Pvalue < 0.001), hypertension (P-value < 0.0001) and diabetes mellitus (P-value < 0.0016). Diverticular disease was the second most common cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, in 33.6% (95%CI: 27.7-39.4), after internal hemor-rhoids, in 44.6% (95%CI: 40.3-48.9). On multivariable logistic regression, hypertension (OR = 2.30; 95%CI: 1.29-4.10), rectal bleeding (OR = 2.57; 95%CI: 1.50-4.38), and per year increment in age (OR = 1.05; 95%CI: 1.03-1.07) were associated with diverticulosis but not with bleeding diverticular disease. High Power Interleaved Boost Converter for Photovoltaic Applications

Interfacing DC sources to load/power grid requires DC converters that produce minimum level of current ripples. This is to limit the losses and hence increase the life span of these sources. This article proposes a simple inter-leaved boost converter that interfaces PhotoVoltaic (PV) module into a common DC-link. The article also addresses the faulty mode operation of the proposed circuit while advising the appropriate remedy actions. A MATLAB and Simulink dynamic platform are used to simulate the transient performance of the proposed converter. The results revealed the effectiveness and the viability of the proposed converter in reducing the ripples in the PV current without employing bulky input inductors or increasing the switching frequency.

Upper Extremities Injuries in Children Attending Pediatric Emergency Department-SFH, Riyadh-Saudi

Trauma is a physical injury caused by violence or other forces;in serious trauma, the patient will be at risk of death or loss of function. Trauma is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among all age groups. Objective: To study the pattern and outcome of upper limbs trauma in children attending the pediatric emergency department. Methodology: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Pediatrics at Security Forces Hospital-Al-Riyadh. Result: Total number of patients seen during the study period was 343 patients, their age range between 6 months and 13 years old with a mean age of 5.473 (±3.8572);also, results showed boys were 187 (54.5%) patients and girls were 156 (45.5%) patients. Based on the site of trauma in the upper limbs, lacerations were in 114 (33.2%), Hand and/or wrist fracture in 67 (19.5%), Nursemaid Elbow in 43 (12.5%), both Radius and Ulnar bones fracture in 33 (9.6%), Radius bone fracture in 29 (8.5%), supracondylar fracture in 22 (6.4%), Clavicle bone fracture in 20 (5.8%), Humorous bone fracture in 7 (2%), Condylar bone fracture 6 (1.7%), and there was 1 (0.3%) patient with Scapulae and Ulna fracture.

BACKGROUND Montelukast or Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that reduces inflammation and relaxes the smooth *** is known to be a safe and tolerable drug;nevertheless,it might be associated with several mild to severe adverse effects,one of which is *** is a rare acquired autoimmune myositis of unknown cause affecting adults and *** literature has infrequently reported the association between dermatomyositis and montelukast *** SUMMARY The current study reports a case of a 48-year-old black woman with a previous history of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinosinusitis who presented with typical signs and symptoms of dermatomyositis which were confirmed by *** developing dermatomyositis,the patient was prescribed montelukast for atopy and consumed the drug for five *** administration of prednisolone,the patient had a significant improvement and is still being followed *** Even though montelukast is widely used and believed to be a safe drug for managing several conditions,the present case report highlights the possibility of adverse effects of ***,future studies with advanced study designs are highly recommended to investigate the association between dermatomyositis and montelukast use.

益生菌对人体胃肠道有益,乳酸菌(LAB)广泛分布于自然界,并在食品工业中得到了充分利用,是益生菌的侯选细菌。本研究目的从沙特阿拉伯国家的某牧场生产的鲜乳和发酵乳中分离乳酸菌和研究其特征。结果,从13种不同的鲜乳和发酵乳分离得到93株疑似乳酸菌。基于16S rDNA基因序列比较并分析其遗传相关性,鉴定了46株乳酸菌。没有一株乳酸菌表现出对临床相关抗生素的抗性或有任何溶血活性,但它们的益生菌特性表现不一,即对pH的耐受性、对胆汁的抗性和抗菌活性。结果表明,分离得到的干酪乳杆菌MSJ1(Lactobacillus casei),干酪乳杆菌Dwan5,植物乳杆菌EyLan2(Lactobacillus plantarum)和屎肠球菌Gail-BawZir8(Enterococcus faecium)最有可能成为有益生菌潜力的最好菌株。我们推测菌种组合的协同作用可以发挥更有效的益生菌的潜力。来自沙特阿拉伯的生鲜乳和发酵乳产品,特别是由骆驼奶制成的发酵奶制品Laban,富含乳酸菌LAB,具有很好的益生菌潜力。

Objective:The present study aimed to address the care of psychiatric patients and its impact on nurses’behavior in Saudi ***:A cross-sectional quantitative questionnaire-based study was *** study was carried out in various government hospitals across different regions of Saudi ***:A total of 73 nurses participated in the study,with male nurses comprising the majority(61.6%)compared to *** a young nurse or with few years of work experience is linked with more predilection towards preventive behaviour and/or physical activity.A significant mean difference was observed,indicating higher scores for preventive behavior among females(female 14.93±5.82 *** 11.56±5.48,P=0.015).The Bonferroni post hoc multiple comparisons did not reveal any statistical significance for single ***(P=0.618),single ***(P=0.223),and married ***(P=0.020).Conclusion:The study results demonstrated a significant impact of caring for psychiatric patients on nurses’*** is concerning because psychological and mental health strain has been shown to contribute to unhealthy lifestyle habits,such as physical inactivity and sleep deprivation,which,in turn,can contribute to the increasing incidence and prevalence of chronic *** interventions targeting psychiatric and mental health nurses should be designed and examined to emphasize the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and an active lifestyle.
