Extracorporeal liver support in severe alcoholic hepatitis

The severity of alcoholic hepatitis(AH) which may coexist with cirrhosis varies greatly, from asymptomatic forms which are detected in alcoholic patients without any sign of liver disease, except laboratory abnormalities, to severe forms characterised by deep jaundice, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy and low prothrombin index. In hospitalized patients the mortality could be as high as 75%. The elevated number of therapeutic proposals reported for more than forty years reveals the lack of efficacy of a particular modality. Even in the most favorable trials, the survival is already very poor and in some cases related to the development of renal failure or hepatorenal syndrome. There are some motivating reports concerning albumin dialysis as a support treatment in patients with severe AH, either alone or in combination with other pharmacological therapies. The favorable effects of albumin dialysis in patients with severe AH suggest that the procedure used alone or in combination with other therapies may have a role in this clinical condition. This will be particularly relevant to offer an alternative therapy in these patients, thus being a potential bridge to recovery or to be listed for liver transplantation.

The Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)is part of the scientific payload of the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)*** is a joint science mission between the European Space Agency(ESA)and the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)and is due for launch in *** is a compact X-ray telescope with a wide field-of-view(FOV)capable of encompassing large portions of Earth’s magnetosphere from the vantage point of the SMILE *** is sensitive to the soft X-rays produced by the Solar Wind Charge eXchange(SWCX)process produced when heavy ions of solar wind origin interact with neutral particles in Earth’s *** provides a mechanism for boundary detection within the magnetosphere,such as the position of Earth’s magnetopause,because the solar wind heavy ions have a very low density in regions of closed magnetic field *** sensitivity of the SXI is such that it can potentially track movements of the magnetopause on timescales of a few minutes and the orbit of SMILE will enable such movements to be tracked for segments lasting many *** is led by the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom(UK)with collaborating organisations on hardware,software and science support within the UK,Europe,China and the United States.

In this study, the boundary-value problem with eigenvalue parameter generated by the differential equation with discontinuous coefficients and boundary conditions which contains not only endpoints of the considered interval, but also point of discontinuity and linear functionals is investigated. So, the problem is not pure boundary-value. The authors single out a class of linear functionals and find simple algebraic conditions on coefficients, which garantee the existence of infinit number eigenvalues. Also the asymptotic formulas for eigenvalues are found.

＜正＞ Aggretin,a heterodimeric platelet aggregation inducer purified from Calloselasma rhodostoma venom, was identified as a collagen - like integrin alpha2betal agonist. In these studies we explore the receptor and signal transduction involved in aggretin - stimulated migration and proliferation of VSMCs. Aggretin significantly increased VSMCs proliferation as determined by tetrazolium assay. Moreover. VSMCs migration toward immobilized aggretin was increased in a modified Boy- den chamber. Incubation of VSMCs with aggretin stimulated the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol 3 - kinase （PI3K）. Akt and extracellular - regulated kinase（ERK） in a time - dependent manner. In a similar fashion, aggretin also induced phosphorylation of eNOS and PDGF beta receptor. Focal adhesion kinase （FAK） was phosphorylated within the first 5 min. The Enos activating related signaling is also elucidated. In conclusion, aggretin activates FAK. PI3K/Akt. ERK. eNOS and PDGF pathways leading to promoting of migration and proliferation of VSMCs.

Aims Extreme climatic events may have important consequences for plant community structure and *** 2005,a severe drought together with a cold winter promoted extensive damage and mortal-ity in shrubland communities of southwest Spain(Doñana National Park).Here,we aim to identify the mechanisms underlying commu-nity stability(resistance and resilience)in response to this extreme climatic event,considering changes in the functional structure of these *** We used a trait-based approach,quantifying variations in 10 func-tional traits at the community level(community weighted means,CWM)and the functional diversity(functional richness,evenness and divergence)in 18 plots at three different times:predating the climatic event(estimated from the sum of the live and dead volume of each species in 2007),and 2 and 8 years after the 2005 *** also quantified the differences in functional traits and functional diversity between adult and recruit stages,which allowed us to bet-ter understand the contribution of the recruitment to the mainte-nance of the functional structure and diversity of the *** Findings Communities with higher functional divergence before the cli-matic event maintained nearly constant their levels of functional divergence 8 years after,but they were more prone to changes in species *** resistance in terms of vegeta-tion cover was positively correlated with root dry matter content,whereas community resilience was positively correlated with leaf chlorophyll(LChl).We also found that some values(weighted means)of functional community traits(such as root dry matter con-tent and LChl)had increased 2 years after the event,returning to the pre-event conditions after 8 *** addition,there was hardly any establishment of new species in the community and the recruits did not make substantial differences to the community functional *** seed mass differed significantly between the adult and se
