Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding in operated stomach: Outcome of 105 cases

AiM: To compare the causes and clinical outcome of pa.ients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGB) and a history of gastric surgery to those with AUGB but without a history of gastric surgery in the ***: The causes and clinical outcome were compared between 105 pa.ients with AUGB and a history of gastric surgery, and 608 pa.ients with AUGB but without a history of gastric ***: Pa.ients who underwent gastric surgery in the past were older (mean age: 68.1±11.7 years vs 62.8±17.8 years, P= 0.001), and the most common cause of bleeding was marginal ulcer in 63 pa.ients (60%). No identifiable source of bleeding could be found in 22 pa.ients (20.9%) compared to 42/608 (6.9%) in pa.ients without a history of gastric surgery (P = 0.003). Endoscopic hemosta.is was permanently successful in 26 out of 35 pa.ients (74.3%) with peptic ulcers and active bleeding or non-bleeding visible vessel. Nine pa.ients (8.6%) were operated due to continuing or recurrent bleeding,compared to 23/608 (3.8%) in the group of pa.ients without gastric surgery in the past (P= 0.028). Especially in peptic ulcer bleeding pa.ients, emergency surgery was more common in the group of pa.ients with gastric surgery in the past [9/73 (12.3%) vs 19/360 (5.3%), P = 0.025].Moreover surgically treated pa.ients in the past required more blood transfusion (3.3±4.0 vs 1.5±1.7, P = 0.0001) and longer hospita.iza.ion time (8.6±4.0 vs 6.9±4.9 d,P = 0.001) than pa.ients without a history of gastric surgery. Morta.ity was not different between the two groups [4/105 (3.8%) vs 19/608 (3.1%)].CONCLUSiON: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding seems to be more severe in surgically treated pa.ients than in non-operated pa.ients.

Tubal liga.ion is a surgical steriliza.ion procedure that provides permanent and reliable contraception to women.?Tubal obstruction is a method of permanent birth control that can be performed after mini-laparotomy under local anesthesia. Objective:?To determine the outcome of tubal steriliza.ions by mini-laparotomy under local anesthesia performed in clients who underwent the surgical opera.ion in the Maternity Ward of ignace Deen Na.ional Hospital. Pa.ients and Methods:?The Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of ignace Deen Na.ional Hospital was used as the place for the study. The study involved all the women seeking voluntary surgical contraception. This was a retrospective study of a descriptive type carried out from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018. A consent form was filled out and signed by spouses after an interview and a systema.ically carried out pre-opera.ive clinical and para-clinical assessment. Results:?During the study period, 56 tubal liga.ions were performed i.e. 4.72 percent of all fa.ily planning methods. The recruiting for the surgical contraception involved clients whose typical profile is that of women with an average age of 35, mostly housewives (35.71%), major multiparous (69.63%) with 6 living children on average. Married women made up the bulk of the recruiting i.e. 96.44%. Unmarried women made much more use of other methods. indica.ions of personal convenience were the most frequently encountered common reason. Among medical causes, high blood?pressure concerned the majority of cases: 38% of the indica.ions. Surgical contraception in between was more practiced than the post-partum one. The recorded complica.ion was the pa.ietal hematoma due to a lack of hemosta.is and it accounted for 1.79% of cases. The progress was uncomplicated in?98.68% of cases. Forty couples (71.42%) expressed their feelings of sa.isfaction against only 6 cases of regret (10.71%). Conclusion:?The surgical contraception has become a requirement for modern couple

Peptides (molecular weights are 1200 – 11,600 Da) biologically acting at concentra.ion 10-8 - 10-15 mg/ml were obtained from leaves of dill Anethum graveolens L. and celandine Chelidonium majus L. by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. We have shown that these peptides form second structure characterized by the prevalence of β-structures and coil in water solution. in model of organotypic roller culturing of triton liver in vitro, the a.ility of the peptides isolated from Anethum graveolens L. and Chelidonium majus L. at concentra.ion 10-8 - 10-15 mg/ml to influence increa.ing of pigment cells, which provided protective function of orga.ism, was demonstrated.

Estima.ion of Heavy Metal Levels in the Muscle, Gizzard, Liver and Kidney of Broiler, Layer and Local (Cockerel) Chickens Raised within Awka Metropolis and its Environs, Anambra State, South Eastern Nigeria

65 chickens (layer, broiler and cockerel) from different farms within Awka metropolis and its environs were purchased, processed and analyzed for the levels of heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Ni, Cr, Hg, V and Cu) in the internal organs (muscle, gizzard, liver and kidney) of the chickens using flame atomic absorption spectrometer after nitric/perchloric a.id digestion. The ranges of mean concentra.ions of the metals in the internal organs of the chickens in mg/g were Pb;(0.046 - 0.478) As;(0.053 - 0.318), Cd;(0.027 - 0.649), Cr;(0.045 - 0.234), Hg;(0.052 - 0.740), Ni;(0.038 - 0.534), V;(0.037 - 0.053), and Cu;(0.146 - 0.445). About 10% - 40% of Pb, Cd and Hg exceeded the permissible level of 0.5 ppm set for these metals in the liver and kidney of the chickens. Anova analysis revealed significance of the heavy metals in the internal organs of the chickens at p < 0.05.

Hypoestoxide inhibits tumor growth in the mouse CT26 colon tumor model

AiM: To evaluate the effect of the natural diterpenoid, hypoestoxide (HE) on the growth of established colon cancer in mice. METHODS: The *** mouse colon carcinoma cell line was grown and expanded in vitro. Following the expansion, BALB/c mice were inoculated s.c. with viable tumor cells. After the tumors had established and developed to about 80-90 mm3, the mice were started on chemotherapy by oral administra.ion of HE, 5-fluoroura.il (5-FU) or combina.ion. RESULTS: The antiangiogenic HE has previously been shown to inhibit the growth of melanoma.in the B16F1 tumor model in C57BL/6 mice. Our results demonstrate that mean volume of tumors in mice treated with oral HE as a single agent or in combina.ion with 5-FU, were significantly smaller (> 60%) than those in vehicle control mice (471.2 mm3 vs 1542.8 mm3, P ignificant reductions in tumor burden resulted in pronounced mean survival times (MST) and increased life spans (iLS) in the treated mice. CONCLUSiON: These results indicate that HE is an effective chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal cancer in mice and that HE may be used alone or in combina.ion with 5-FU.
