In-depth analysis of soil management and farmers’perceptions of related risks in two olive grove areas in southern Spain

This manuscript presents a questionnaire-based study aimed to provide a detailed analysis on the different soil management carried out by olive farmers in two representative olive-growing areas in southern Spain(Cordoba and Estepa),their perceptions on cover crop use and the possible influence of the different types of farms and farmers’typologies on these *** results show a relatively la.ge variability of soil management,with fourteen options,as a result of a combination of different alternatives for bare soil and cover crops with the use or not of pruning residues,but with a.great similarity between both *** results indicate a high adoption of soil conservation measures in the two study areas,with 63%of farmers using cover crops and 80%a mulch of pruning residues,higher than that reported in previous studies in Southern Spain,and a trend of lower use of these techniques by less experienced and younger *** high penetration of soil conservation measures resulted in a significant reduction of soil erosion risk,as indicated by the relatively low values for the cover and management factor(C)of RUSLE,also calculated and presented in this study,but also the possibility of focusing further efforts on fanners with less *** results indicate the persistence of a minor,but relevant,percentage of farmers using bare soil management(37%)and no mulching(20%),with a moderate concern on the impact of soil erosion on soil degradation and provision of ecosystem *** suggests the need to concentrate efforts also on this cluster of farmers to enhance the success of what seems to be a remarkable expansion of the use of soil conservation measures in recent decades in Southern Spain,but also in similar areas in the Mediterranean basin.

Appraising trapping efficiency of vegetative barriers in agricultural landscapes:Strategy based on a probabilistic approach based on a review of available information

Vegetative barriers have proven their effectiveness in controlling water erosion and enhancing other ecosystem services in agricultural *** characteristic has led to the conservation and promotion of vegetative barriers as landscape elements by the Common Agricultural Policy and other policy *** reviews have dealt with the trapping efficiency of vegetated barriers,although they usually focus on studies from humid climates where their implantation and survival are more ***,vegetated barriers are also an attractive alternative in arid and semi-arid *** limit competition for water and nutrients with crops to a reduced area compared to other best management practices,such as cover *** study presents a review of trapping efficiency of sediment,runoff,and nutrients(P and N)by vegetative barriers in regions of humid and arid,and semi-arid,climates,and a strategy based on sediment trapping efficiency probability,which in turn is based on the results obtained from our *** types of independent variables were grouped and identified for the review:related to the vegetative barrier dimension(buffer width,slope of the plot,and buffer area ratio),and related to the experimental conditions(type of vegetation in the buffer,soil protection of the non-buffered area,type of climate,type of experimental measurement and origin of rainfall).An explor-atory analysis evaluated the significance of the experimental variables,which identified the need to focus on experiments under natural rainfall since those carried out with simulated rainfall presented statis-tically significant *** general,average trapping efficiencies for runoff and sediment were 40.1 and 62.6%,*** nutrients,values of trapping efficiencies had an average of 44.9%for phosphorus and 38.4%for *** and sediment trapping efficiency in arid and semi-arid re-gions tended to be higher than in humid *** dimensional

Determination of sildenafil by preconcentration on surfactant coated polymeric resin followed by spectrofluorimetry

The illicit addition of phosphodiesterase type-5 （PDE-5） inhibitors like sildenafil （Viagra） in product offered as herbal medicine or dietary supplement for male erectile dysfunction has concerned authorities in recent times. In this paper, we proposed a sensitive surfactant-coated Amberlite XADTM resin for sildenafil preconcentration method with spectrofluorimetric detection. Retention capacity of micellar coated XAD resin for sildenafil was studied and the obtained eluate was measured by spectrofluorometer at excitation and emission wavelengths of 350 and 430 nm, respectively. This method allowed the detection of sildenafil at 0.15 ng/mL with linear ra.ge of 0.0003-7.0 μg/mL. The method has been successfully applied to the analysis of some local commercially available herbal medicines and urine.

Improvement in Hurst exponent estimation and its application to financial markets

This research aims to improve the efficiency in estimating the Hurst exponent in financial time series.A new procedure is developed based on equality in distribution and is applicable to the estimation methods of the Hurst *** show how to use this new procedure with three of the most popular a.gorithms(generalized Hurst exponet,total tria.gles area,and fractal dimension)in the *** show that this new approach improves the accuracy of the original methods,mainly for longer *** second contribution of this study is that we show how to use this methodology to test whether the series is self-similar,constructing a confidence interval for the Hurst exponent for which the series satisfies this ***,we present an empirical application of this new procedure to stocks of the S&P500 *** to previous contributions,we consider this to be relevant to financial literature,as it helps to avoid inappropriate interpretations of market efficiency that can lead to erroneous decisions not only by market participants but also by policymakers.

Morphology and distribution of Pronoctiluca (Dinoflagellata, incertae sedis) in the Pacific Ocean

The diversity and distribution of Pronoctiluca, a marine dinoflagellate of enigmatic systematic position, was studied in the vicinity of the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents, the Philippines, Celebes, Sulu and South China Seas, western and central equatorial and southeast Pacific Ocean. The abundance of Pronoctiluca was high- er, with a wide vertical distribution, in eutrophic temperate regions, whereas it was nearly absent in surface waters of oligotrophic tropical regions. Most of the specimens corresponded to P. spinifera. Pronoctiluca pelagica, covered by hyaline layers and with no flagella, is considered as an encysted form. The bipartition was only observed in P. acuta-P, spinifera forms, that together with the occurrence of intermediate forms between P. spinifera and P. pelagica suggest that they may correspond to developmental stages of a single species. Pronoctiluca is essential to understanding the evolutionary history of the alveolates.

Dicroerisma (Actiniscales, Dinophyceae) in the open Pacific Ocean, a.gymnodinioid dinoflagellate with an endoskeleton

This study is the first to describe and illustrate the dinoflagellate genus Dicroerisma in the open Pacific Sea and in the southern hemisphere. Eleven individuals ascribed to Dicroerisma psilonereiella were encountered in subsurface waters (>70 m depth) from 34°N to 33°S. Another specimen that differs from the type is also illustrated. These findings reveal that Dicroerisma is a widespread genus and that there is tentative existence of another species within the genus.

Optimal Coordinated Operation of Distributed Static Series Compensators for Wide-area Network Congestion Relief

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power excha.ged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NLP with k-means clustering a.gorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems.
