The main objective of this paper is ***, to provide an overview of the current status of the power electronics technology, one of the key actors in the upcoming smart grid paradigm enabling maximum power throughputs and near-instantaneous control of voltages and currents in all links of the power system chain. Second, to provide a bridge between the power systems and the power electronic communities, in terms of their differing appreciation of how these devices perform when connected to the power grid. Third, to discuss on the role that the power electronics technology will play in supporting the aims and objectives of future decarbonized power systems. This paper merges the equipment, control techniques and methods used in flexible alternating current transmission systems(FACTS) and high voltage direct transmission(HVDC) equipment to enable a single, coherent approach to address a specific power system problem, using ‘best of breed’ solutions bearing in mind technical, economic and environmental issues.

Battery energy storage systems(BESSs)are expected to play a crucial role in the operation and control of active distribution networks(ADNs).In this paper,a holistic state estimation framework is developed for ADNs with BESSs integrated.A dynamic equivalent model of BESS is developed,and the state transition and measurement equations are *** on the equivalence between the correction stage of the iterated extended Kalman filter(IEKF)and the weighted least squares(WLS)regression,a holistic state estimation framework is proposed to capture the static state variables of ADNs and the dynamic state variables of BESSs,especially the state of cha.ge(SOC).A bad data processing method is also *** simulation results show that the proposed holistic state estimation framework improves the accuracy of state estimation as well as the capability of bad data detection for both ADNs and BESSs,providing comprehensive situational awareness for the whole system.

This paper presents a parameter estimation technique for the hot-spot thermal model of power *** proposed technique is based on the unscented formulation of the Kalman filter,jointly considering the state variables and parameters of the dynamic thermal model.A two-stage estimation technique that takes advantage of different loading conditions is developed,in order to increase the number of parameters which can be *** results are presented,which show that the observable parameters are estimated with an error of less than 3%.The parameter estimation procedure is mainly intended for factory testing,allowing the manufacturer to enhance the thermal model of power transformers and,therefore,its customers to increase the lifetime of these *** proposed technique could be additionally considered in field applications if the necessary temperature measurements are available.

Lessons from International Students’ Reaction to the 2011 great East Japan Earthquake:The Case of the School of Engineering at Tohoku University

The objective of this study is to document the reaction of international students to the 11 March 2011 emergency in order to inform and improve disaster management strategies, both public and institutional. The study is based mainly on a questionnaire survey carried out in a.gust 2011 and follow-up interviews with students and other stakeholders. It describes the background of Tohoku University’s School of Engineering and covers six different stages in the evolution of the emergency:(1) immediate response;(2) taking shelter in Sendai;(3) life in the city during the aftermath;(4) sheltering outside Sendai;(5) coming back;plus(6) an overview of the experience. Major findings include: the process of evacuation and safety confirmation was successful, yet the subsequent phases(2 and 3) went on mostly unmanaged;students relied mostly on secondary sources of information to make decisions, mainly family and friends of the same nationality, most of whom probably were not better informed than the students themselves. Based on the findings, suggestions for future disaster planning are advanced, as well as a discussion on the challenges of information provision during crisis.

Orchards have a high potential for carbon ***,little research is available on the spatial variability at catchment scale and on the difference between the tree area and the *** analyzed theik spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock,SOCstock at 90 cm depth in an 8-ha catchment in Southern Spain with olives on a vertic *** showed higher soil organic carbon concentration,SOC,in the tree area as compared to the lane up to 60 cm depth,but its impact on SOCstock was negligible since it was compensated by the higher soil bulk density in the *** at different depths was correlated with that in the top 0-5 *** overall SOCstock of the orchard was 4.14 kg m^(-2),ra.ging between 1.8 and 6.0 kg m^(-2).This SOCstock is in the mid-lower ra.ge of values reported for olive orchards,measured at smaller scale,and similar to those other intensive field crops and agroforestry under comparable rainfall *** spatial variability in SOCstock was correlated to several geomorphological variables:elevation,cumulative upstream area,topographic wetness index,sediment transport index,and tillage *** in SOC and SOCstock are driven by the sediment redis-tribution downslope,mainly by tillage erosion,and higher soil water availability in lower areas allowing higher biomass *** topographic indexes and the correlation between SOC in the topsoil and SOCstock up to 90 cm should be further explored in other typology of olive orchards for facilitating the mapping of SOC_(stock).

Continuum Discretized Coupled-Channel（CDCC） model calculations of total, complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for reactions of the weakly bound 6Li with 144,154Sm ta.gets at energies around the Coulomb barrier are presented. In the cluster structure frame of 6Li→α＋d, short-ra.ge absorption potentials are considered for the interactions between the ground state of the projectile 6Li and α-d fragments with the ta.get. In order to separately calculate complete and incomplete fusion and to reduce double-counting, the corresponding absorption potentials are chosen to be of different ra.ge. Couplings to low-lying excited states 2＋, 3-of 144Sm and 2＋, 4＋ of 154Sm are included. So, the effect on total fusion from the excited states of the ta.get is investigated. Similarly, the effect on fusion due to couplings to resonance breakup states of 6Li, namely, l = 2,Jπ= 3＋, 2＋, 1＋ is also *** latter effect is determined by using two approaches,（a） by considering only resonance state couplings and（b）by omitting these states from the full discretized energy space. Among other things, it is found that both resonance and non-resonance continuum breakup couplings produce fusion suppression at all the energies considered.
