Prognostic role of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with non-metastatic and metastatic prostate cancer:A meta-analysis and systematic review

Objective: To analyze data available in the literature regarding a possible prognostic value of the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients stratified in non-metastatic and metastatic diseases.Methods: A literature search process was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. In our meta-analysis, the pooled event rate estimated and the pooled hazard ratio were calculated using a random effect model.Results: Forty-two articles were selected for our analysis. The pooled risk difference for non-organ confined PCa between high and low NLR cases was 0.06 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.03-0.15) and between high and low PLR cases increased to 0.30 (95% CI: 0.16-0.43). In non-metastatic PCa cases, the pooled hazard ratio for overall mortality between high and low NLR was 1.33 (95% CI: 0.78-1.88) and between high and low PLR was 1.47 (95% CI: 0.91-2.03), whereas in metastatic PCa cases, between high and low NLR was 1.79 (95% CI: 1.44-2.13) and between high and low PLR was 1.05 (95% CI: 0.87-1.24).Conclusion: The prognostic values of NLR and PLR in terms of PCa characteristics and responses after treatment show a high level of heterogeneity of results among studies. These two ratios can represent the inflammatory and immunity status of the patient related to several conditions. A higher predictive value is related to a high NLR in terms of risk for overall mortality in metastatic PCa cases under systemic treatments.

Is there a relationship between dopamine and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment?

Dopamine and its receptors have been widely studied in the neurological conditions and in the retina. In this study, we evaluated the possible role of dopamine in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD) by comparing the amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC), a surrogate index of retinal dopamin levels, in the vitreous sample of patients affected by RRD with those affected by macular pucker and vitre ous hemorrhage. Our results showed that significantly higher levels of DOPAC were found in the vitreou sample of patients affected by RRD compared with those affected by vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker(P = 0.002). Specifically, no trace of the substance was found in vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker samples. A slightly significant positive correlation was found among DOPAC and post-operativ best corrected visual acuity(r = 0.470, P = 0.049). No correlation was found between DOPAC and the day elapsed between diagnosis and surgery(P = 0.317). For the first time our findings suggest that DOPAC i released in RRD, but not in other retinal diseases such as vitreous hemorrhage and macular pucker. More over, we showed a correlation between visual acuity outcome and the amount of DOPAC in the vitreous This might have a potential, although still unknown, implication in the pathogenesis of the disease and/o in the associated photoreceptors loss. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Rome Tor Ver gata University Hospital(R.S.92.10) on September 24, 2010.

In modern physics and fabrication technology,simulation of projectile and target collision is vital to improve design in some critical applications,like;bulletproofing and medical applications.Graphene,the most prominent member of two dimensional materials presents ultrahigh tensile strength and stiffness.Moreover,polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)is one of the most important elastomeric materials with a high extensive application area,ranging from medical,fabric,and interface material.In this work we considered graphene/PDMS structures to explore the bullet resistance of resulting nanocomposites.To this aim,extensive molecular dynamic simulations were carried out to identify the penetration of bullet through the graphene and PDMS composite structures.In this paper,we simulate the impact of a diamond bullet with different velocities on the composites made of single-or bi-layer graphene placed in different positions of PDMS polymers.The underlying mechanism concerning how the PDMS improves the resistance of graphene against impact loading is discussed.We discuss that with the same content of graphene,placing the graphene in between the PDMS result in enhanced bullet resistance.This work comparatively examines the enhancement in design of polymer nanocomposites to improve their bulletproofing response and the obtained results may serve as valuable guide for future experimental and theoretical studies.

Despite the uniquely high thermal conductivity of graphene is well known,the exploitation of graphene into thermally conductive nanomaterials and devices is limited by the inefficiency of thermal contacts between the individual nanosheets.A fascinating yet experimentally challenging route to enhance thermal conductance at contacts between graphene nanosheets is through molecular junctions,allowing covalently connecting nanosheets,otherwise interacting only via weak Van der Waals forces.Beside the bare existence of covalent connections,the choice of molecular structures to be used as thermal junctions should be guided by their vibrational properties,in terms of phonon transfer through the molecular junction.In this paper,density functional tight-binding combined with Green's functions formalism was applied for the calculation of thermal conductance and phonon spectra of several different aliphatic and aromatic molecular junctions between graphene nanosheets.Effects of molecular junction length,conformation,and aromaticity were studied in detail and correlated with phonon tunnelling spectra.The theoretical insight provided by this work can guide future experimental studies to select suitable molecular junctions,in order to enhance the thermal transport by suppressing the interfacial thermal resistances.This is attractive for various systems,including graphene nanopapers and graphene polymer nanocomposites,as well as related devices.In a broader view,the possibility to design molecular junctions to control phonon transport currently appears as an efficient way to produce phononic devices and controlling heat management in nanostructures.

Hemodynamic low-frequency(~0.1 Hz)spontaneous oscillations as detected in the brain by nearinfrared spectroscopy have potential applications in the study of brain activation,cerebral autoregulation,and functional connectivity.In this work,we have investigated the phase lag between oscillations of cerebral deoxy-and oxy-hemoglobin concentrations in the frequency range 0.05-0.10 Hz in a human subject during a mental workload task.We have obtained a measure of such phase lag using two different methods:(1)phase synchronization analysis as used in the theory of chaotic oscillators and(2)a novel cross-correlation phasor approach.The two methods yielded comparable initial results of a larger phase lag between low-frequency oscillations of deoxy-and oxyhemoglobin concentrations during mental workload with respect to a control,rest condition.

Slug catcher finger-type CFD simulator for two-phase flow separation

Slug catcher is an important and costly equipment in the up-stream assets,but is the less supported by research or commercial simulation software in terms of design and sizing criteria.The purpose of this paper is to present a simulation model based on the open-source software for computational fluid-dynamics OpenFOAM®,which can assist during the preliminary sizing,made by the usual simplified methods,proving the fluid-dynamic behaviour and drive the process engineers to an optimum final design by checking all the expected production profiles of the related oil/gas field,for a comprehensive and safe operation all along the reservoir life.The slug catcher main function is to ensure the separation of the phases within the acceptance specifications dictated by the process units of downstream CPF(Central Production Facility).The optimization of the slug catcher could allow the reduction of the equipment overall dimensions,that is essential to reduce the capital expenditure and make the installation more flexible.The graphic output is a strong tool in the hand of engineers,following the fluid-dynamic response of the slug catcher in the gas-liquid separation section,in function of the flow pattern at the entrance and superficial velocities of the phases.

A novel hemodynamic model has been recently introduced,which provides analytical relation-ships between the changes in cerebral blood volume(CBV),cerebral blood flow(CBF),andcerebral metabolic rate of oxy gen(CMRO2),and associat ed changes in the tissue concentrationsof oxy-and deoxy-hemoglobin(AO and AD)measured with near-infrared,spectroscopy(NIRS)[S.Fantini,Neuroimage 85,202-221(2014)].This novel model can be applied tomeasurements of the amplit ude and phase of induced hemodynamic oscillations as a function ofthe frequency of oscillation,realizing the novel technique of coherent hemodynamics spectroscopy(CHS)[S.Fantini,Neuroimage 85,202-221(2014);M.L.pierro et al.,Neuroimage 85,222-233(2014)]:In a previous work,,we have demonstrated an in vivo application of CiHS on hunanSubjects during paced breat hing[M.L.pierro et al,Neuroimage 85,222-233(2014)].In thiswork,we present a new analysis of the collected data duringpaced breat hing based on a slightlyrevised formulation of the hemodynamic model and ann efficient fitting procedure.While we haveinitially treated all 12 model parameindeependent,we have found that,in this new in-plementation of CHS,the number of independent is eight.In this article,we identifythe eight independent model parameters and,we show that our previous results are consistentwith the new formulation,once the individual parameters of the earlier analysis are combinedinto the new set of independent parameters.

A number of congenital and acquired disorders require esophageal tissue replacement.Various surgical techniques,such as gastric and colonic interposition,are standards of treatment,but frequently complicated by stenosis and other problems.Regenerative medicine approaches facilitate the use of biological constructs to replace or regenerate normal tissue function.We review the literature of esophageal tissue engineering,discuss its implications,compare the methodologies that have been employed and suggest possible directions for the future.Medline,Embase,the Cochrane Library,National Research Register and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched with the following search terms:stem cell and esophagus,esophageal replacement,esophageal tissue engineering,esophageal substitution.Reference lists of papers identified were also examined and experts in this field contacted for further information.All full-text articles in English of all potentially relevant abstracts were reviewed.Tissue engineering has involved acellular scaffolds that were either transplanted with the aim of being repopulated by host cells or seeded prior to transplantation.When acellular scaffolds were used to replace patch and short tubular defects they allowed epithelial and partial muscular migration whereas when employed for long tubular defects the results were poor leading to an increased rate of stenosis and mortality.Stenting has been shown as an effective means to reduce stenotic changes and promote cell migration,whilst omental wrapping to induce vascularization of the construct has an uncertain benefit.Decellularized matrices have been recently suggested as the optimal choice for scaffolds,but smart polymers that will incorporate signalling to promote cell-scaffold interaction may provide a more reproducible and available solution.Results in animal models that have used seeded scaffolds strongly suggest that seeding of both muscle and epithelial cells on scaffolds prior to implantation is a prerequisite for complete esophageal replacement.

Body Image and Personality in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: A Case-Control Study

Introduction: The amount of research on the relationship between plastic surgery and psychological features, such as personality disorders and indexes of body image dissatisfaction, has increased significantly in the last years. Aim: The aim of the present study was to examine these psychological features among Italian patients who underwent aesthetic plastic surgery, testing the mediating role of the mass media influence on the relationship between them and the choice of aesthetic plastic surgery. The Personality diagnostic Questionnaire 4+ (PDQ-4+) and the Body Uneasiness Test (BUT) were administered to patients who underwent aesthetic plastic surgery (N = 111) and participants who had no history of aesthetic plastic surgical procedures (N = 149). Results: Results showed that aesthetic patients reported higher indexes of body image disturbance than controls. No significant differences between aesthetic participants and controls were found in all three cluster B personality disorders. Moreover, the effect of body image dissatisfaction on the choice to undergo aesthetic plastic surgery was partially mediated by the influence of mass media. Conclusions: In conclusion, the present study confirmed the importance of body dissatisfaction as a predictor of the choice to undergo aesthetic surgery and highlighted the influence of media messages regarding physical appearance.

Illness Perception in Gestational Trophoblastic disease Patients: How Mental Representations Affect Anxiety, Depression, and Infertility-Related Stress

Gestational Trophoblastic disease encompasses a group of pregnancy-related disorders that derive from the placenta. Taking Leventhal’s Common Sense Model as a starting point, this study aims to investigate how illness perception could influence patients’ psychological adaptation to these rare diseases. Thirty-seven women completed: the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised, the Beck Depression Inventory Short Form, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Fertility Problem Inventory. Results show that the perception of severe illness consequences significantly predicts the level of anxiety patients reported at the time of questionnaire completion. Furthermore, mental representations of illness present a significant association with infertility-related stress. Specifically, the belief in the efficacy of the treatment results in fewer feelings of discomfort and isolation from family and social context due to infertility-related problems. Since patients’ illness perception was found to have a specific impact on both anxiety and infertility-related stress, this variable should be considered in the planning of a clinical intervention.
