Eyelid Wounds: Epidemiological, Clinical and Etiological Aspects

Purpose: The aim is to show epidemiological, clinical and etiological characteristics of palpebral wounds. Methodology: This was a retrospective study focusing on patients with an eyelid wound, over a 10-year period from 2012 to 2021. We collected and analyzed the data using Excel. Results: The frequency of eyelid wounds was 0.1%. The average age of our patients was 19.38 years with a range of 1 and 62 years. The sex ratio was 3.7. Eighty-one percent of patients lived in Dakar. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of patients consulted less than 24 hours after the trauma and 7% of patients on D1. The circumstances were brawls (11%), domestic accidents (9%), road accidents (6%), and work accidents (6%). We noted 1 case of dog bite. Thirteen patients presented with post-traumatic decreased visual acuity. Involvement of the isolated upper eyelid was noted in 40% of cases and both eyelids in 15% of cases. Involvement of the lacrimal ducts was noted in 17% of cases, and that of the free edge in 21% of cases. Eyelid wounds were associated with eyeball damage in 21% of cases. Various associated lesions were observed. Ninety-one percent of patients received surgical treatment. Three cases of superinfections, 1 case of conjunctival granuloma and 1 case of phthysis of the eyeball with postoperative retinal detachment were noted. Conclusion: Eyelid sores are relatively common in our context. They require rapid surgical treatment in order to preserve the functional and aesthetic prognosis. .

Ultra-low temperature cofired ceramics based on Li_(2)WO_(4)as perspective substrate materials for terahertz frequencies

With the development of low dielectric permittivity materials having an ultra-low sintering temperature,testing their dielectric properties at terahertz frequencies suitable for 6G communication systems and implementation of the fabricated materials in ultra-low temperature cofired ceramics(ULTCC)were the main goals of the *** tungstate Li_(2)WO_(4)was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and used for the preparation of green tapes and test structures with cofired internal conductive layers,which are destined for substrates of microwave and submillimeter wave *** behavior,thermal effects,and mass changes of the green tapes during heating were studied using a hot-stage microscope,differential thermal analysis,and thermogravimetry.A single-phase composition was revealed for being undoped and doped with AlF3–CaB_(4)O_(7)*** impact of frequency,temperature,the addition of AlF3–CaB_(4)O_(7)and CuBi_(2)O_(4)dopants,and sintering temperature was the subject of in-depth characterization of dielectric properties in a terahertz region.A glass-free composition,ultra-low sintering temperature of 590–630℃,low roughness of the green tapes,dense microstructure,compatibility with Ag conductors,low and stable dielectric permittivity of 5.0–5.8 in a broad range of 0.2–2 THz,and low dielectric loss of 0.008–0.01 at 1 THz are the main advantages of the developed ULTCC substrates.

Literature data on glioblastoma ongoingly underline the link between metabolism and cancer stemness,the latter is one responsible for potentiating the resistance to treatment,inter alia due to increased *** recent years,glioblastoma stemness research has bashfully introduced a key aspect of cytoskeletal rearrangements,whereas the impact of the cytoskeleton on invasiveness is well *** non-stem glioblastoma cells are less invasive than glioblastoma stem cells(GSCs),these cells also acquire stemness with greater ease if characterized as invasive cells and not tumor core *** suggests that glioblastoma stemness should be further investigated for any phenomena related to the cytoskeleton and metabolism,as they may provide new invasion-related ***,we proved that interplay between metabolism and cytoskeleton existed in *** searching for cytoskeleton-related processes in which the investigated genes might have been involved,not only did we stumble across the relation to metabolism but also reported genes that were found to be implicated in ***,dedicated research on these genes in GSCs seems justifiable and might reveal novel directions and/or biomarkers that could be utilized in the ***,we review the previously identified cytoskeleton/metabolism-related genes through the prism of glioblastoma stemness.

In this work,we demonstrate the power of a simple top-down electrochemical erosion approach to obtain Pt nanoparticle with controlled shapes and sizes(in the range from-2 to-10 nm).Carbon supported nanoparticles with narrow size distributions have been synthesized by applying an alternating voltage to macroscopic bulk platinum structures,such as disks or *** using any surfactants,the size and shape of the particles can be changed by adjusting simple parameters such as the applied potential,frequency and electrolyte *** instance,application of a sinusoidal AC voltage with lower frequencies results in cubic nanoparticles;whereas higher frequencies lead to predominantly spherical *** the other hand,the amplitude of the,sinusoidal signal was found to affect the particle size;the lower the amplitude of the applied AC signal,the smaller the resulting particle ***/C catalysts prepared by this approach showed 0.76 A/mg mass activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction which is-2 times higher than the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst(0.42 A/mg)from *** addition to this,we discussed the mechanistic insights about the nanoparticle formation pathways.

Hepatoprotective and proapoptotic effect of Ecballium elaterium on CCl_4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Objective: To investigate the effects of perorally administered juice on tetrachloromethane(CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were tubeadministrated silymarin, Ecballium juice at 0.2 mL/kg and 0.7 mL/kg daily for 3 consequent days, ie. 3.28 μg and 11.48 μg of cucurbitacin B per kg of body weight respectively. On the third day, liver damage was induced by intraperitoneal application of CCl4. On the fourth day, abdominal cavity was macroscopically examined and liver samples were taken for histopathological and immunochemical evaluation. HPLC was used to determine the content of the active substance cucurbitacin B. Results: The experiment revealed that 0.7 ml/kg juice concentration expressed the highest pro-apoptotic activity, but with prevailing negative effects. Compared with the lower concentration, there was an observable vasodilatation with consequent interstitial hemorrhages and a larger scope of inflammatory damage, which suppressed the hepatoprotective effect. In the 0.2 mL/kg concentration, there was a smaller pro-apoptotic activity but other parameters had better results, and the liver parenchyma damage was reversible. Conclusions: No reactions confirming the potentially allergic effect on laboratory rats were observed; its hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effect was confirmed on a model of acute liver damage.

Lesions Superimposed by Traditional Medicine on Renal Biopsies in Senegal

Traditional African medicine products are responsible for kidney damage that baffles both nephrologists and pathologists. Renal biopsies reveal acute or chronic inflammatory changes that cannot be explained by the progressive stage of the basic lesion of the nephropathy. The aim of this study is to analyze the lesions superimposed on 73 kidney biopsies from patients who took traditional herbal medications to treat the symptoms of kidney disease.

Contribution to the Study of Diabetic Kidney Disease in a Sub-Saharan Environment: An Example of the Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital in Dakar

Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease and dialysis admission. Few studies are available in Sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this work was to study the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics of DKD in our context. Patients and Methods: We conducted an observational, exhaustive and retrospective study focusing on diabetic patients seen in consultation or hospitalized in the Nephrology Department of at the Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital in Dakar during a period of 5 years from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021. Results: Of 4735 patients seen during the study period, 491 had DKD, i.e. a hospital prevalence of 10.36%. The average age was 59.1 ± 11.4 years with a sex ratio of 0.95. Type 2 diabetes predominated with 93.4%. The average duration of diabetes was 11.5 ± 7.6 years. Diabetes was associated with high blood pressure in 78.81% of cases, dyslipidemia in 23.2% of cases, active smoking in 6.7% of cases and obesity in 1.6% of cases. Renal failure was the main reason for referral 72.3%. One hundred and forty-eight patients (30.1%) had uncontrolled diabetes. Macroalbuminuria was found in 64.8% and microalbuminuria in 18.7% of cases. One hundred and eighty-five patients (37.7%) were in Stage V of kidney disease and 137 patients were in Stage III (18.1% in Stage IIIb and 9.8% in Stage IIIa). Diabetic nephropathy was the main etiology at 61.30%. Nephropathy was mixed (diabetic and hypertensive) in 18.12 cases. Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockers were prescribed in 83.5% of patients. Conclusion: The different etiologies encountered during the study show the diversity of diabetic kidney disease. Diabetic nephropathy is not the only kidney damage that can occur in diabetics in our context.

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in One-Eyed Patients: Therapeutic and Prognostic Challenges

Background: Retinal detachment is a major ophthalmologic emergency. The rhegmatogenous form is the most common and its management is exclusively surgical as soon as possible. This urgency becomes major and absolute when it occurs in a particular monocular vision. Purpose: To analyze the clinical forms of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), the results and the complications of their management in monophthalmic patients. Methodology: This was a retrospective and analytical study from June 2007 to December 2019. We included all patients who received a consultation for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. All patients were seen by at least two posterior segment specialists and all were operated on by the same surgeon. Results: 57 files (57 eyes) were collected with an average age of 44.71 years and a sex ratio of 7.14. The average consultation time is 40.80 days. Patients complained of decreased visual acuity in 96.49% of cases. We had myopia in 49.12% of cases and 91.23% of patients were phakic. Retinal holes were found in 31.58% of our patients and giant tears in 17.54%. The mean retinal detachment extension was 2.52 quadrants and the macula was raised in 32 cases. The average time taken to take charge was 10 days. Detachment surgery was performed in 42 patients with 100% anatomical recovery. Conclusion: Retinal detachment in one-eyed patient is a major ophthalmic emergency. Its management must not suffer from any delay. Post-operative outcomes are relatively similar between the internal and external pathways. In one-eyed patient, silicone can be left alone in the absence of complications.

Effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Prenatal Consultations for Pathological Pregnancies at the Maternity Unit of Abass Ndao Hospital, Dakar, Senegal

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to changes in health systems. The objective was to assess the effect of Covid-19 on the frequency of prenatal consultations (PNCs) for pathological pregnancies at the Abass NDAO Hospital Centre. Materials and Methods: This was primarily a retrospective study conducted at the Abass NDAO Hospital maternity ward. The target was the medical records of women followed for a pathological pregnancy at maternity from July 2019 to November 2020. Second, the department’s qualified staffs were asked about their experiences with the Covid-19 pandemic. Data collection was carried out between October 2021 and February 2022. Results: A total of 690 prenatal charts for pathological pregnancy were collected: 375 (54%) before the pandemic compared to 315 during Covid-19 (46%). The average age of women was 28.15 years. The age group 25 and 35 was the most represented (36.81%). Reasons for consultation were dominated by threats of premature delivery (51%), followed by severe pre-eclampsia (14%) and premature membrane rupture (11%), respectively. The frequency of prenatal consultations (PNCs) was inversely related to pandemic dynamics and significant monthly variations were observed. Qualified health personnel were midwives (71.40%) and gynecologists (28.60%). During the pandemic, more than the majority of staff (67%) worked 3 days a week, and 24% of health workers 5 days. The majority of staff (60%) reported experiencing overwork during the pandemic. Non-compliance with consultation days was noted in 38% of health providers. Protective equipment was not provided to 14% of the staff. Staff difficulties during prenatal consultations were fear of occupational exposure (12%) and patient reluctance (88%). Conclusion: The Covid-19 pandemic is having a major impact on prenatal consultations for pathological pregnancies at Abass NDAO Hospital.
