BACKGROUND Rectal Dieulafoy's lesions (DLs) are very rare;however, they can be life threatening when presented with massive hemorrhage. CAsE sUMMARY A 44-year-old female with medical history of chronic renal failure who was on renal replacement therapy presented with lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Physical examination revealed signs of hypovolemic shock and massive rectal bleeding. Complete blood count revealed abrupt decrease in hematocrit. After hemodynamic stabilization, an urgent colonoscopy was performed. A rectal DL was diagnosed, and it was successfully treated with two hemoclips. There were no signs of recurrent bleeding at thirty days of follow-up. CONCLUsION Rectal DLs represent an unusual cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Massive hemorrhage can increase the morbidity and mortality of these patients. Endoscopic management continues to be the reference standard in the diagnosis and therapy of these lesions. Thermal, mechanical (hemoclip or band ligation), or combination therapy (adrenaline injection combined with thermal or mechanical therapy) should be considered the first choice for treatment.

The aim of this study was to describe the compositional, functional and sensory properties of six traditional Mexican cheeses: Panela, Oaxaca, Manchego, Manchego Botanero, Tenate, and Morral. A total of 50 cheeses were analysed. Relevant compositional parameters including pH, aw, proximate composition, NaCl, sugars, lactic and acetic acids, mineral contents, free-amino acid nitrogen, fat acid degree value and total fatty acids were determined. In addition, colour and texture profile analyses of unmelted cheeses and their meltability were investigated. Furthermore, other 30 cheeses were used for a descriptive sensory analysis. Properties of cheeses were described, compared between each cheese, and related to their respective making processes.

In spain, certain population-based studies have shown high blood mercury (Hg) levels due to the high consumption of fish. some studies have stated that one of the most consumed fish in spain is canned tuna. Different spanish organisms consider that it is safe to consume canned tuna as it supposedly has a low mercury content, particularly in so-called light tuna. However, in spain light tuna is mainly yellowfin and bigeye tuna, while in other countries it is mainly skipjack tuna. This study analyzed 36 cans of the most popular brands in spain and examined the influence of the type of tuna, packaging medium (olive oil, sunflower seed oil, water or marinade), different brands, prices and expiration dates. Mercury concentrations (mg/kg) were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and thermal decomposition amalgamation. The medians observed were (mg/kg): light tuna: 0.314;IQR: 0.205 - 0.594, white tuna: 0.338;IQR: 0.276 - 0.558, skipjack: 0.311;IQR: 0.299 - 0.322, frigate tuna: 0.219;IQR 0.182 - 0.257 and mackerel: 0.042;IQR 0.029 -?0.074. We found statistically significant differences between white tuna, light tuna and mackerel (p = 0.004);light tuna and mackerel (p = 0.002) and white tuna and mackerel (p = 0.006). However, we found no differences between white tuna and light tuna, or among packaging medium, brands, prices or expiration dates. The limit of 0.500 mg/kg of mercury in canned tuna was exceeded by the following percentages of the cans: 33.3% of light tuna, 16.7% of white tuna, and 0% of skipjack, frigate tuna and mackerel. The mercury content of the cans of spanish light tuna that were analyzed was variable and high. The results of this study indicate that stricter regulation of Hg in canned tuna is necessary. Until then, it is safer to recommend that vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women consume canned mackerel, which has a markedly lower mercury content.

Circuits in barrels of the rodent brain’s primary somatosensory (s1) cortex build up following constructivist rules. Previous evidence in mice supports that the precise addition of barrel neuropil is promoted by insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). The signaling cascades mediating this response remain undetermined. To a.dress whether the effects of IGF-1 upon the growth of s1 circuits are mediated by insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRs-1), we studied barrel size in adult mice having the IRs-1 gene knocked out (IRs-1 ko). Our results reveal that barrel size is similar between wild type and IRs-1 ko mice suggesting that IRs-1 is not essential for barrel circuitry growth. Hence, investigations aimed at exploring other substrates activated by IGF-1, namely IRs-2 and IRs-4, are needed to reveal signaling pathways that mediate the precise addition of s1 neuronal circuitry.

The implementation of alternative harvest systems which are able to accelerate the kinetics of growth of plants, is extremely important to decrease the time of crop. In this sense, Electro-Hydroponic culture, i.e., the application of an electric field in the nutrient solution of the hydroponic culture emerges as an alternative and interesting harvest system. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the electric field applying different intensities of direct current (DC) at the galvanostatic regime (50, 37.5, 25 and 12.5 mA) on the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) plants in hydroponic culture. Fifty lettuce plants were used in a nutrient solution, from which 4 groups composed of ten lettuces each one, were subjected at 12.5, 25, 37.5 and 50 mA, respectively. A fifth group of ten lettuces was used as a reference test, i.e., without application of DC. The experiments were carried out during 16 days. The results reveal that the kinetics of growth of the lettuce is dependent on the applied current;actually it is observed an increase in the foliate area of the plants cultivated in the presence of DC than that obtained in the reference test. Furthermore, the plants subjected at 12.5 mA, revealed an increase in the foliate area of 65.3% and 73.2% in comparison with the reference test.

We synthesized about sixty metal organic materials. Only three were metal organic frameworks (MOFs). One of them was a porous molecular magnet (PMM). For the PMM synthesis Ni was the node, oxalic acid the organic linker and DMF the solvent and shaping molecule. This PMM was studied with drIFTs, Raman spectrometry, TGA, XRD, adsorption and with a VsM. TGA and adsorption data indicated that a microporous material with a pore volume, W = 0.10 ± 0.01 cm3/g was obtained. The analysis of the XRD profile indicated that it is a layered compound. The drIFTs, Raman and XRD data revealed that each layer is formed by nickel cations linked by bis-bidentate and bridging-bis-bidentate oxalate ligands and the DMF molecules are perpendicularly linked to the nickel cations to produce stacking. Additionally, the Raman data allowed us to propose that the nickel cations are located in octahedral and pentacoordinated sites as Ni2+ and Ni3+. The Pawley fitting of the XRD profiles pointed out that the hydrated sample crystallizes in the P2/m space group. The cell parameters calculated are consistent with the proposed structure. Two different adsorption states showing different adsorption energies, in the physical adsorption range, were observed. The small amount estimated for the dispersive and quadrupole adsorption interaction energies was a confirmation of the proposed layered structure. The VsM study yielded an effective magnetic moment, ?eff?????????. This figure is consistent with nickel located in octahedral and pentacoordinated sites as Ni2+ and Ni3+. We had then obtained a new Ni-oxalic porous molecular magnet (Ni-Ox-PMM). The significance of this PMM is related to its porosity, that is, during degassing it release water turning into a porous stable structure, showing notable magnetic properties.
