Advances in Active Suspension Systems for Road Vehicles

Active suspension systems(ASSs)have been proposed and developed for a few decades,and have now once again become a thriving topic in both academia and industry,due to the high demand for driving comfort and safety and the compatibility of ASSs with vehicle electrification and autonomy.Existing review papers on ASSs mainly cover dynamics modeling and robust control;however,the gap between academic research outcomes and industrial application requirements has not yet been bridged,hindering most ASS research knowledge from being transferred to vehicle companies.This paper comprehensively reviews advances in ASSs for road vehicles,with a focus on hardware structures and control strategies.In particular,state-of-the-art ASSs that have been recently adopted in production cars are discussed in detail,including the representative solutions of Mercedes active body control(ABC)and Audi predictive active suspension;novel concepts that could become alternative candidates are also introduced,including series active variable geometry suspension,and the active wheel-alignment system.ASSs with compact structure,small mass increment,low power consumption,high-frequency response,acceptable economic costs,and high reliability are more likely to be adopted by car manufacturers.In terms of control strategies,the development of future ASSs aims not only to stabilize the chassis attitude and attenuate the chassis vibration,but also to enable ASSs to cooperate with other modules(e.g.,steering and braking)and sensors(e.g.,cameras)within a car,and even with high-level decision-making(e.g.,reference driving speed)in the overall transportation system-strategies that will be compatible with the rapidly developing electric and autonomous vehicles.

Living photovoltaics are microbial electrochemical devices that use whole cell–electrode interactions to convert solar energy to electricity.The bottleneck in these technologies is the limited electron transfer between the microbe and the electrode surface.This study focuses on enhancing this transfer by engineering a polydopamine(PDA)coating on the outer membrane of the photosynthetic microbe Synechocystis sp.PCC6803.This coating provides a conductive nanoparticle shell to increase electrode adhesion and improve microbial charge extraction.A combination of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),UV–Vis absorption,and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to characterize the nanoparticle shell under various synthesis conditions.The cell viability and activity were further assessed through oxygen evolution,growth curve,and confocal fluorescence microscopy measurements.The results show sustained cell growth and detectable PDA surface coverage under slightly alkaline conditions(pH 7.5)and at low initial dopamine(DA)concentrations(1 mM).The exoelectrogenicity of the cells prepared under these conditions was also characterized through cyclic voltammetry(CV)and chronoamperometry(ca).The measurements show a three-fold enhancement in the photocurrent at an applied bias of 0.3 V(vs.Ag/AgCl[3 M KCl])compared to non-coated cells.This study thus lays the framework for engineering the next generation of living photovoltaics with improved performances using biosynthetic electrodes.

Aquaculture industry contributes significant aquaculture species production to meet fish protein demand from the world.The industry is gearing towards intensification to increase more production in the near future.Various technologies and efforts were introduced into aquaculture industry to bring it up to the next higher level.However,the development of aquaculture industry is hindered by disease constraint.As a result,excessive use of antibiotics and chemicals were applied to reduce or minimize risk of disease outbreak in aquaculture farming activity.Subsequently,aquacultures products and environment were highly exposed to these antibiotics and chemicals.To resolve this issue,fish farmers were encouraged to utilize alternative method in aquaculture species health management.Prebiotics has become a new approach in aquaculture industry to maintain aquaculture species health and a good environment at the same time produce chemical and antibiotic-free aquaculture product.In this review paper,we summarize and discuss the effects of prebiotic mixtures administration on growth performance,immune response,disease resistance,and tolerance against abiotic stressors of aquatic animals.

Assessment of programmed death-ligand 1 expression in primary tumors and paired lymph node metastases of gastric adenocarcinoma

BACKGROUND Anti-programmed death-1/programmed death-ligand 1(PD-1/PD-L1)immuno-therapy has demonstrated promising results on gastric cancer(GC).However,PD-L1 can express differently between metastatic sites and primary tumors(PT).AIM To compare PD-L1 status in PT and matched lymph node metastases(LNM)of GC patients and to determine the correlation between the PD-L1 status and clinicopathological characteristics.METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 284 GC patients who underwent D2-gastrectomy.PD-L1 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry(clone SP142)using the com-bined positive score.All PD-L1+PT staged as pN+were also tested for PD-L1 expression in their LNM.PD-L1(-)GC with pN+served as the comparison group.RESULTS Among 284 GC patients included,45 had PD-L1+PT and 24 of them had pN+.For comparison,44 PD-L1(-)cases with pN+were included(sample loss of 4 cases).Of the PD-L1+PT,54.2%(13/24 cases)were also PD-L1+in the LNM.Regarding PD-L1(-)PT,9.1%(4/44)had PD-L1+in the LNM.The agreement between PT and LNM had a kappa value of 0.483.Larger tumor size and moderate/severe peritumoral inflammatory response were associated with PD-L1 positivity in both sites.There was no statistical difference in overall survival for PT and LNM according to the PD-L1 status(P=0.166 and P=0.837,respectively).CONCLUSION Intra-patient heterogeneity in PD-L1 expression was observed between the PT and matched LNM.This disagreement in PD-L1 status may emphasize the importance of considering different tumor sites for analyses to select patients for immunotherapy.

Sea Cucumber Fishery in Aurora, Philippines

This study was conducted to provide a preliminary assessment of the sea cucumber fishery in Aurora, Philippines. This was conducted from February to June 2013. All sea cucumber gatherers and traders, obtained through snowball sampling, in each identified sea cucumber fishery area in six coastal municipalities (Baler, Dipaculao, Dinalungan, casiguran, Dilasag and Dingalan) were interviewed using a structured interview schedule and focused group discussions (FGD). Results revealed that gathering sea cucumbers were accomplished by handpicking, skin diving or compressor diving. A total of 15 commercial species were regularly gathered. Out of this, three species are of very high economic value (≥Php 4000/kg) (Holothuria nobilis, Holothuria scabra, and Actinopyga lecanora). The average number of kilograms harvested per hour per trip ranges from 0.21 (Holothuria fuscopunctata) to 2.71 (Holothuria scabra), while the average size of commonly gathered sea cucumber varies among species with Holothuria lecanora showed an average length (29.26 cm) greater than recorded 24 cm. Processing mainly involves washing, slicing, boiling, drying and packing. Processed sea cucumbers or trepan were sold to middlemen or direct buyers who usually offered higher prices (36.36% up to 69.20%) than the former. Problems encountered by sea cucumber gatherers and traders include a decline in total catch, a shift in area of collection from intertidal zones to deeper waters, an increase in the number of hours spent in finding and gathering sea cucumbers, the use of compressors in gathering, the decline of larger species and gathering of smaller sizes in huge amount, the absence of conservation program for sea cucumber, and the lenient implementation of government policies with regards to coastal resources management.

Efficient and reversible separation of NH_(3) by deep eutectic solvents with multiple active sites and low viscosities

The efficient separation and collection of ammonia(NH_(3))during NH_(3) synthesis process is essential to improve the economic efficiency and protect the environment.In this work,ethanolammonium hydrochloride(EtOHACl)and phenol(PhOH)were used to prepare a novel class of deep eutectic solvents(DESs)with multiple active sites and low viscosities.The NH_(3) separation performance of EtOHACl+PhOH DESs was analyzed completely.It is figured out that the NH_(3) absorption rates in EtOHACl+PhOH DESs are very fast.The NH_(3) absorption capacities are very high and reach up to 5.52 and 10.74 mol·kg1 at 11.2 and 100.4 kPa under 298.2 K,respectively.In addition,the EtOHACl+PhOH DESs present highly selective absorption of NH_(3) over N_(2) and H_(2) and good regenerative properties after seven cycles of absorption/desorption.The intrinsic separation mechanism of NH_(3) by EtOHACl+PhOH DESs was further revealed by spectroscopic analysis and quantum chemistry calculations.

On the origin of plasticity-induced microstructure change under sliding contacts

Discrete dislocation plasticity(DDP)calculations are carried out to investigate the response of a single crystal contacted by a rigid sinusoidal asperity under sliding loading conditions to look for causes of microstructure change in the dislocation structure.The mechanistic driver is identified as the development of lattice rotations and stored energy in the subsurface,which can be quantitatively correlated to recent tribological experimental observations.Maps of surface slip initiation and substrate permanent deformation obtained from DDP calculations for varying contact size and normal load suggest ways of optimally tailoring the interface and microstructural material properties for various frictional loads.

The risk analysis evaluates the probability of occurrence with the impact of said risks.In the hydrocarbon sector,an environmental liability is an improperly abandoned facility,soil contaminated by spills or others.The objective of this work is to define a risk management plan.The characterization of the residue and the area was carried out.Hazardous events were identified:overflow spill,soil contamination by infiltration,as well as radiant heat and suffocating and toxic fumes from a fire.The matrix method was applied considering the probability of occurrence against vulnerability.The danger of infiltration implied a high level of risk.The risk management plan was drawn up,its main action being the liquidation of the pool and the sanitation of the area.

This essay explores recent incursions into comparative modalities and highlights how global comparative literature better reflects the ways in which borders and mobility have become definingelementsof the21stcentury.However,thehumanities remainunderattack.Recent openings towards decolonizing the curriculum and strengtheningsynergies between various social justice approaches may prove fruitfulin coordinating defenses.Todayconomic and historical circumstances are such that it has become increasingly hard to think of literary traditions in monolithic terms since globalization has dramatically transformed the circulation of literary works In our understanding,a comparativist is not necessarily invested either in demonstrating the intrinsic connections between cultural or literary objects as traditional practitioners of comparative literature have been,or committed to disclosing incommensurable differences,as postcolonial comparativists have been Instead,the comparative frame of mind is defined by the fundamental insight that any cultural product or production is inherently heterogeneous and hence requires no external object of comparison Put otherwise,a comparative frame of mind does not require the co-presence of two or more cultural or literary archives in practicing comparative literature,for any single object can be read in relation to,oreven against,itsowncontext.Likewise,languagesarenot,andshould notbeconsidered monolithic entities Rather,they are historical containers,mobile vessels that transport perpetually evolving references and symbols across borders,the portals and vectors that allow for multi-dimensional cultural and linguistic expression.We therefore argue that the persistent privileging of multi-lingual fluency as the raison d'etre of comparative literature needs to be relinquished,and that instead one needs to embrace the idea that one can bea comparatist withinasingle language.In other words,we argue that comparison is as relevant within diverse national traditions as it is between them.

Interspecific plant interaction via root exudates structures the disease suppressiveness of rhizosphere microbiomes

Terrestrial plants can affect the growth and health of adjacent plants via interspecific interaction.Here,we studied the mechanism by which plant root exudates affect the recruitment of the rhizosphere microbiome in adjacent plants—with implications for plant protection—using a tomato(Solanum lycopersicum)–potatoonion(Allium cepa var.agrogatum)intercropping system.First,we showed that the intercropping system results in a disease-suppressive rhizosphere microbiome that protects tomato plants against Verticillium wilt disease caused by the soilborne pathogen Verticillium dahliae.Second,16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that intercropping with potatoonion altered the composition of the tomato rhizosphere microbiome by promoting the colonization of specific Bacillus sp.This taxon was isolated and shown to inhibit V.dahliae growth and induce systemic resistance in tomato plants.Third,a belowground segregation experiment found that root exudates mediated the interspecific interaction between potatoonion and tomato.Moreover,experiments using split-root tomato plants found that root exudates from potatoonion,especially taxifolin—a flavonoid compound—stimulate tomato plants to recruit plant-beneficial bacteria,such as Bacillus sp.Lastly,ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis found that taxifolin alters tomato root exudate chemistry;thus,this compound acts indirectly in modulating root colonization by Bacillus sp.Our results revealed that this intercropping system can improve tomato plant fitness by changing rhizosphere microbiome recruitment via the use of signaling chemicals released by root exudates of potatoonion.This study revealed a novel mechanism by which interspecific plant interaction modulates the establishment of a disease-suppressive microbiome,thus opening up new avenues of research for precision plant microbiome manipulations.
