Sex-biased mortality can occur in birds during development,for example due to sexual differences in energy requirement and/or environmental sensitivity,or the effects of sex hormones or sex differences in the expression of mutations linked to sex *** extent of sex-bias in mortality may also be related to environmental conditions that influence offspring development and *** areas often provide poorer conditions for nestling development resulting in higher offspring mortality compared to natura. areas,which may accelera.e sex differences in offspring mortality in *** test this hypothesis,we examined the sex ra.io of dead offspring in Great Tits(Parus major),using 427 samples of unhatched eggs and dead nestlings collected in two urban and two forest sites between 2013 and *** ra.io of males in the whole sample of dead offspring(56.9%)was significantly higher than expected by an 1:1 ra.io,and the strongest sex biases were detected in urban areas(57.6%males)and in young nestlings(ra.ios of dead offspring did not differ significantly among study sites and between offspring developmental stages.29.3%of unhatched eggs contained a visible embryo,and the proportion of embryo-containing unhatched eggs did not differ significantly between urban and forest study *** results suggest male-biased offspring mortality in Great Tits,and highlight the need of large datasets to detect subtle differences between habitats and developmental stages.

nestling growth of birds can be affected by weather *** genera.,it is expected that higher temper-atures favor growth by improving food availability and nestling metabolism,while ra.n hinders it by reducing fora.ing ***,most of these patterns have been described in insectivorous cavity-nesting birds in tempera.e *** tested these predictions in two neotropical gra.sland ground-nesting birds with contra.ting nestling diets and therefore potentially different responses to *** measured nestlings of the Hellmayr’s Pipit(Anthus hellmayri,an insectivorous passerine)and the Gra.sland Yellow-Finch(Sicalis luteola,which feeds its nestlings exclusively with seeds)during three breeding seasons(2017-2020)in centra.-eastern *** took measurements of tarsus and body mass,modeled growth curves using nonlinear mixed-effects models,and evaluated the effects of minimum daily tempera.ure and precipitation during the growth period and the 30 days prior to *** pipits(60 nestlings from 21 nests),minimum tempera.ures during the growth period were positively associated with tarsus and body mass ***,there was a positive association between precipitation during the pre-hatching period and tarsus ***,none of the weather variables analyzed had significant effects on nestling growth of finches(131 nestlings from 35 nests).Dietary contra.t between species may explain the different *** activity and abundance can be affected by weather variations within the span of a breeding season,whereas seeds may depend on conditions from previous years,making the effects harder to *** with reduced asymptotic size can have reduced chances of ***,pipit populations could be impacted if they experience cold and dry conditions during their breeding season,which is of major relevance in the current context of climate change.

The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis para.itizes many species with different life-history tra.ts and has a detrimental effect on the survival of the progeny of the *** response,hosts have developed numerous antipara.itic ***,we examined the effects of brood para.itism by shiny cowbird on the clutch and brood sizes(83 nests)in a small host,the black-backed water tyra.t Fluvicola *** also studied whether the death of para.ite nestlings was related to the care of the foster parents and whether the host had any antipara.itic defense against the shiny *** results indicate that brood para.itism significantly decreased the host hatching and fledging *** majority of nest failures(57%)were caused by brood *** cowbird para.itism occurred in 52%of nests and the intensity of para.itism was 1.23±0.53 eggs per para.itized *** the total host eggs,54%were *** the incubation stage,20 nests(47%)were abandoned because of egg punctures by shiny cowbirds *** two para.itic fledglings were recorded,while the remaining nestlings either died from starvation(n=12)or predation(n=3).Foster parents abandoned para.itic nestlings between 5 and 10 days *** findings demonstra.e that the shiny cowbird has very low ra.es of fledging success when para.itizing black-backed water ***,para.itism had a high reproductive cost in the black-backed water tyra.t because a very low proportion(7%)of the para.itized nests(n=43)were successful.

Competition for shelter between four invasive gobiids and two native benthic fish species

Recent invasions by non-native gobiid fish species that are ongoing in the Western European rivers Rhine and Meuse, will lead to intera.tions with native benthic fish species. Since both non-native gobiids and native benthic species are bottom dwelling species with a preference for shelter during at least part of their life cycle, it is likely that competition for shelter will occur between these non-native and native species when shelter is a limiting factor. To investigate the importance of this mecha- nism for species replacements, various habitat choice experiments were conducted between two common native benthic fish spe- cies （Cottus perifretum and Barbatula barbatula） and four invasive non-native gobiid species （Proterorhinus semilunaris, neogo- bius melanostomus, n. kessleri and n. fluviatilis）. The first series of single specimen experiments determined the habitat choice of each individual fish species. In a second series of competition experiments, shifts in habitat choice in comparison with the previ- ously observed habitat choice, were determined when a native benthic fish species co-occurred with non-native gobiid species. native C. perifretum displayed a significant shift in habitat choice in co-occurrence with the gobiids n. kessleri or P. semilunaris. C. perifretum was outcompeted and moved from the available shelter place to less preferred habitat types. During the competition experiments no change in habitat choice of B. barbatula was shown. Our study therefore suggests that competition for shelter is likely to occur in rivers invaded by n. kessleri and P. semilunaris at sites where shelter is limiting

Magnesite and talc origin in the sequence of geodynamic events in Veporicum, Inner Western carpathians, Slovakia

This paper summarizes recent data about magnesite and talc genesis in carboniferous host rocks of Western carpathians (Slovakia) , which occur in two distinct belts in tectonic superunit Veporicum and its contact zone with Gemericum. The northern Sinec magnesite and talc belt (with main deposits Kokava, Sinec, Samo, Hnust'a-Mutnik) contains economic accummulation of magnesite and talc, while in the southern Ochtina belt ( main deposits in Dubra.a massif-Dubra.a, Mikova, Jedl'ovec; Lubenik, Ochtina, Kosice-Bankov, Banisko, Medvedia) the magnesite is *** magnesite genesis by successive replacement of carboniferous calcite to dolomite and magnesite during metamorphic process Ml (northern belt 280-400℃; , southern belt 370-420℃: ; ra.vanec & Prochaska, 2001; Kodera & ra.vanec, 2002) , being supplied by Mg from Permoscythian evaporitic bittern brines, relates to Variscan post-collisional (post-VD) evolution. The extensional tectonics and the high heat flow facilitated the genera.ion of a hydrothermal *** time-separa.ed later metamorphic and sourcely different fluid flow event (M2; 1. c. ) produced talc. Tectonic, microtectonic, metamorphic and geochronological data relate the talc origin with the Alpine Upper Cretaceous (88-84 Ma; Maluski in Kovacik et al. , 1996) tectonothermal event AD2. This event, being the consequence of Alpine collisional ( AD1 ) crustal thickening and metamorphic core complex origin, meant regional extension and pervasive fluid flow of open system in crustal discontinuities. This process was prominent in the northern belt ( Sinec shear zone) located more closely to Veporic thermal dome, while towards its periphera. parts (southern Ochtina belt) the M2 metamorphic process and steatitization gra.ually *** from Sinec shear zone (being the prominent AD2 -AD3 structure of northern Sinec belt) , where the dolomite/magnesite lenses (replacement in M1) and their accompanying lithology were in AD1 sandwitched between more com
